I've stuck with Western Digital Caviar Black for a while.

Prices have come a bit down I think.

fwiw WD has always been fine by me

^^ interesting piece about why its hard to figure out who makes the best drives

max, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago) link

i actually took that guy's advice last time i bought a HD (not the one in questsh)

hard drives suck, keep backups, they all die except for the ones that magically do not

laptop hard drives have gotten better since they have more motion sensors these days, but in the past it was basically a function of how much you moved around the laptop. I think I killed two drives over four years.

desktop drives are a crapshoot, but nothing has been as bad as the bad batch of IBM Deskstars ("death stars") that were in EVERYTHING a number of years ago. I remember that something like 90% of them went bad in under a year

mh, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:05 (twelve years ago) link

i have so many hard drives :S

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:18 (twelve years ago) link

sorry for your loss

speaking of hard drives and lion and so forth, why is the mofo indexing the spotlight every time i try to wake it up and thereby locking up

the late great, Thursday, 29 March 2012 01:42 (twelve years ago) link

that is really weird, has it not finished a spotlight index at all? maybe the index is corrupted. I think there's a magic way to force it to rebuild those

mh, Thursday, 29 March 2012 13:49 (twelve years ago) link

add the volume to the excluded list in spotlight preferences, close, re-open and then remove it again. it'll reindex from scratch. give it a few hours to do so

update for the folks who gave me advice about my MBP: after a couple phone convos with applecare they advised me to bring it into the store and have it checked out. they think it's a logic board problem that is know to occur with 2010 MBPs, so they are replacing the LB for me. they don't think it's the HD, thankfully. and thank GOD i paid for applecare extended cuz the repair would have cost twice the price of the warranty.

i'm doing the ipad/bluetooth keyboard thing for the next couple of days, it's not a bad way to go! wondering if this shouldn't be my default travel setup, actually...

although having peeked at the new ipad screens my ol' 2 doesn't seem so nice anymore :/

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Saturday, 31 March 2012 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

Applecare is fantastic. My iPhone's home button died a couple of weeks ago and they gave me a new/refurb phone on the spot.

I never got Applecare for this 2yo MBP (stupid stupid) and now I'm crossing everything that it hangs on for another year. No faults of any kind so far.

TURPS-DEFCON1.jpg (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 31 March 2012 21:21 (twelve years ago) link

gotta get it for the laptops!!!

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Saturday, 31 March 2012 22:24 (twelve years ago) link

so what's next? an acer ultrabook?

i don't have any more faith in apple.

the late great, Monday, 2 April 2012 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

how much faith do u have in acer

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Monday, 2 April 2012 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

i can tell u tho from personal observation, contrarian switching back to windows tends to end in tears

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Monday, 2 April 2012 22:09 (twelve years ago) link

otm

༼◍ྀ ౪ ◍ི ༽ (cozen), Monday, 2 April 2012 22:23 (twelve years ago) link

yup. it's a mistake.

Nhex, Monday, 2 April 2012 22:52 (twelve years ago) link

does it really? i can see that, i tend to forget how much time i spent registries and dll files and whatnot, though i'm not sure i prefer "osx voodoo"

also i must admit the new android phones are starting to look real good compared to iphones, maybe not better but real good

the late great, Monday, 2 April 2012 22:53 (twelve years ago) link

they look great, but the touch action is still miles away. honestly, i don't get why they can't do this

Nhex, Monday, 2 April 2012 22:56 (twelve years ago) link

Samsung and HTC are breathing down Apple's neck atm. Apple wants to produce a decently advanced phone this year if it's to stay ahead.

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 2 April 2012 23:04 (twelve years ago) link

this is such a 1998 question but does anybody have solid info on a good USB hub? i think i want something powered and the apple store appears to be selling an "ultra slim" 7-port belkin jobbie but i can't find any reviews of it anywhere

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 2 April 2012 23:08 (twelve years ago) link

eh, get a cheap crap 7-port hub from ebay for like $10

Nhex, Monday, 2 April 2012 23:09 (twelve years ago) link

right, i sort of don't want to do that if it's just going to break and/or take a day to charge my phone

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 2 April 2012 23:15 (twelve years ago) link

YES

dan selzer, Monday, 2 April 2012 23:16 (twelve years ago) link

the whole industry is a sham, man. it'll work just as well as that $40 Belkin hub from Staples

for some reason this generic one is the only one anyone recommends. It's powered, it's brandless, it's good. I bought one for my step-father, one for my mother and one for myself.

dan selzer, Monday, 2 April 2012 23:18 (twelve years ago) link

i've had this garbage one for years, hasn't given me any issues yet. and if it does *shrug*

TRIXES High Speed 7 Port USB 2.0 HUB+UK AC Power Adapter Cable

Id give this item no stars, arrived, looked OK, plugged in and it became red hot started to smoke so quickly removed power, as i did the casing fell apart too, and i could see the circuits were all burnt out. if this happened while i wasnt looking it quite easily could of burnt my house down!!

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 2 April 2012 23:26 (twelve years ago) link

dan i wish the one you recommend were sold in the UK :(

A thing that's REALLY shitting me about the retina iPad is the lack of updates to apps that don't work properly on it. ADE pubs like The New Yorker look like arse, and my workflow is totally scuppered due to the amount of time it's taking to sort out stuff like Notes Plus and Paper. Starting to worry that pen/drawing fluidity is terminally fucked on this thing.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 05:10 (twelve years ago) link

So far my favorite thing to do on NEW IPAD is look at maps. It's just made for them.

lukas, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 23:21 (twelve years ago) link

i use a mac for some design classes i'm taking and have sort of taken to it, but the mice wheels are fucking grating. i'm constantly switching, or on, new computers and they all seem to share trait of being able to scroll up but not functioning when it comes to scrolling down.

maybe wrong thread

kelpolaris, Thursday, 12 April 2012 17:34 (twelve years ago) link

There is a hate thread.

I assume you're talking about the old mice with the little trackball? It gets gummed up easy. Try pressing down hard and scrolling down over and over again, that usually cleans it up.

Or get a mouse you like and bring it with you. I use an old Kensington Trackball at home and a Wacom tablet w/ mouse at work.

dan selzer, Thursday, 12 April 2012 17:46 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, that mighty mouse with the little scroll ball was awful, i've always hooked up a standard 2-button wheel mouse to my mac

Nhex, Thursday, 12 April 2012 19:22 (twelve years ago) link

I like that mouse and like the little trackball...you just have to be diligent about cleaning it.

dan selzer, Thursday, 12 April 2012 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

Turns out most drawing apps are lazily relying on the CPU and need to be rebuilt. Apparently Procreate is GPU-centric and glides like silk.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:05 (twelve years ago) link

I try hard not to procreate though

I'm considering taking up santeria so I can keep my old MacBook Pro alive for another month (five years old and subject to a lot of hard living) or so until the new model comes out.

Reality Check Cashing Services (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 13 April 2012 02:42 (twelve years ago) link

i know right, this is nailbitingly tense, two of my keys just stopped working in the last week, the grounding prong fell off the AC power adaptor AND my hard drive has been making suspicious noises

the late great, Friday, 13 April 2012 02:50 (twelve years ago) link

;_; we are now officially an all-Mac household as my 5 year old PC died two nights ago

really hope I can salvage the hard drive (thank God I had my iTunes library on an external disk)
