stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:29 (twelve years ago) link

J3nny it was lovely bumping into you in the subway, even if it was only for 5 seconds. :)

tanuki, Friday, 30 March 2012 03:32 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah! You're looking well. I love the beard in person. Also, I'm sorry you had to see my "COMMUTING FUCK YOU OUT OF MY WAY COMMUTING" face.

carl agatha, Friday, 30 March 2012 12:29 (twelve years ago) link

Fela! was enjoyable. I will say that I'm not sure how well it worked as a piece of theatre. The conceit is that Fela is directly addressing the audience as though we were at his club in Lagos, Nigeria -- complete with expected call-and-response and dancing/singing along -- but the venue doesn't quite work for that. (Maybe this was taken into greater consideration on Broadway?) The narrative of his life also becomes a series of anecdotes without much dramatic force. But the music was obviously awesome, and there's some creative staging and set design, too.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Friday, 30 March 2012 13:17 (twelve years ago) link

Thanks for the update. It sounds worth seeing just to hear the music in a setting like that.

a reminder that jesse and i are available for pub quiz tomorrow if other people want to come.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 2 April 2012 16:08 (twelve years ago) link

i know jon/via said he was possibly interested.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 2 April 2012 16:09 (twelve years ago) link

Yes.

Hey, IDK who is following the comedy poll results, but Eric H is volunteering to run a horror poll which I think some of you might be interested in and I definitely am (despite really not knowing much about much).

I would join for pub quiz tomorrow.

courtnoodle, Monday, 2 April 2012 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

So the owner of R's company bought everyone lottery tickets last week and someone who works there won $10k. That person is now bringing in a tattoo artist on Friday and everyone who works there can have a free tattoo. Very strange.

dan m, Monday, 2 April 2012 19:42 (twelve years ago) link

that is strange

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 2 April 2012 19:43 (twelve years ago) link

$10k each? How much cash does R get? Also what tattoo is she planning to get?

JESSE and anyone else really - if there is a horror movie nomination thread and I miss it (v likely) would you post a link here? TIA

carl agatha, Monday, 2 April 2012 19:50 (twelve years ago) link

Just one person won $10k and that person is "giving" everyone free tattoos as a result.

dan m, Monday, 2 April 2012 19:54 (twelve years ago) link

aaaaaaaaaand apparently the whole thing is an april fools gag, trust the idiots who run the place to pull that shit a day late

dan m, Monday, 2 April 2012 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

unfortunately i'll have to miss pub quiz this week, my wife threw her back out last night and can barely walk, let alone pick up a nearly 20 pound 6-month old

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 2 April 2012 20:38 (twelve years ago) link

No. Tell her to put that baby on a travois and she'll be FINE.

That is a completely stupid and not funny April Fool's joke.

Jenny, I will probably miss it too since I don't use SNA, so EVERYONE ELSE: Let Jenny and me know about the horrific movie poll!

jvc, I hope your wife feels better soon! Thrown out backs are so annoying and painful. :(

PS do you post baby photos of the little man on the ILP photo quarantine or anything?

carl agatha, Monday, 2 April 2012 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

he posts pictures on FACEBOOK

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 2 April 2012 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

I AM NOT ON FACEBOOK

and I'm glad because I just read an article about how there's some app that uses Facebook data to show people where women are so you can use Facebook if you want to get killed by a serial killer with an iPhone but NOT ME.

carl agatha, Monday, 2 April 2012 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

my wife is the diligent photo taker and poster, so she puts them up on facebook, i haven't posted many here

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 2 April 2012 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

fyi i did just add one to the photo quarantine thread

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 2 April 2012 21:13 (twelve years ago) link

Jenny, that app got shut down right away.

jvc, I'm sorry, I do hope your wife feels better.

Originally about the photo but also about the app.

carl agatha, Monday, 2 April 2012 21:15 (twelve years ago) link

But really a travois is never a bad idea.

I will put in a firm "maybe" for pub quiz tomorrow -- I had last week off and so trying to dig myself out of all the work that went undone may mean I have to stay late tomorrow etc.

Neither of those rounds bodes well for me, I fear.

deploying a sewer otter unit (askance johnson), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 14:25 (twelve years ago) link

I watched all of the 1st three seasons of CYE back to back, but that was 4 years ago. Maybe a review of Wikipedia will help.

2 = Curb Your Enthusiasm

Just figured that out. I've seen every episode, including the most recent season, though I may not remember specific details. I'll study up.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 14:34 (twelve years ago) link

I called in sick today. I'm only a little sick but Sarah is really sick and had to deal with Evie yesterday and I hadn't used any sick time at my current job yet so I just called in. And I'm glad I did because it's beautiful out and I took Evie to the playground. I'll still be at pub quiz tonight though.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago) link

Perhaps not surprisingly, I have not been to a single one of those bars. Actually, there's some small chance I've been in the boundary, but I don't thinks o.

deploying a sewer otter unit (askance johnson), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

I've been to Fado, English, Sluggers, and Debonair Social Club. Of the three, I only have positive memories about Fado.

dan m, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:28 (twelve years ago) link

dan m, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:28 (twelve years ago) link

Horrors, I've been to six: Nick's Uptown (possibly where I first had Malort?), Fado, English (for a work function), Casey Moran's (friend invited me b/c there were free drinks), Smart Bar, and John Barleycorn.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:44 (twelve years ago) link

Didn't realize Fado was so bad, but then I've only been there early on Saturday mornings which I imagine is a slightly different crowd than what is being referenced there. Years ago I was dating a girl who's friends would always end up at Tai's at the end of the night because former Cubs pitcher Kyle Farnsworth used to hang out there, so I went there a couple times - even worse than described.

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:51 (twelve years ago) link

yeah English seems to be a "function" kind of place -- the two times I've gone were for a Fire thing and something organized for R's work

xp I didn't mind Fado, but the fact that it was, again, a Fire-related event, the goalkeepers and coach were bartending, and there were a lot of people I know and like there helped a whole lot.

dan m, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:52 (twelve years ago) link

I've only been to John Barleycorn, which seemed pretty average, but it was probably early in the evening.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

Nick's Uptown and maybe Casey Moran's for lunch once long long ago. Was the Cubby Bear on the list? I've been there, too (during the day).

carl agatha, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:03 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, a lot of these places, especially the irish pubs, are probably fine before they fill up with assholes.

deploying a sewer otter unit (askance johnson), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:03 (twelve years ago) link

I would switch the rankings of Smart Bar and The Boundary.

)Dre( vs. (Eazy), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

I've had good times at the smart bar.
