"by Generic"

A thing that's REALLY shitting me about the retina iPad is the lack of updates to apps that don't work properly on it. ADE pubs like The New Yorker look like arse, and my workflow is totally scuppered due to the amount of time it's taking to sort out stuff like Notes Plus and Paper. Starting to worry that pen/drawing fluidity is terminally fucked on this thing.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 05:10 (twelve years ago) link

So far my favorite thing to do on NEW IPAD is look at maps. It's just made for them.

lukas, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 23:21 (twelve years ago) link

i use a mac for some design classes i'm taking and have sort of taken to it, but the mice wheels are fucking grating. i'm constantly switching, or on, new computers and they all seem to share trait of being able to scroll up but not functioning when it comes to scrolling down.

maybe wrong thread

kelpolaris, Thursday, 12 April 2012 17:34 (twelve years ago) link

There is a hate thread.

I assume you're talking about the old mice with the little trackball? It gets gummed up easy. Try pressing down hard and scrolling down over and over again, that usually cleans it up.

Or get a mouse you like and bring it with you. I use an old Kensington Trackball at home and a Wacom tablet w/ mouse at work.

dan selzer, Thursday, 12 April 2012 17:46 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, that mighty mouse with the little scroll ball was awful, i've always hooked up a standard 2-button wheel mouse to my mac

Nhex, Thursday, 12 April 2012 19:22 (twelve years ago) link

I like that mouse and like the little trackball...you just have to be diligent about cleaning it.

Turns out most drawing apps are lazily relying on the CPU and need to be rebuilt. Apparently Procreate is GPU-centric and glides like silk.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:05 (twelve years ago) link

I try hard not to procreate though

I'm considering taking up santeria so I can keep my old MacBook Pro alive for another month (five years old and subject to a lot of hard living) or so until the new model comes out.

i know right, this is nailbitingly tense, two of my keys just stopped working in the last week, the grounding prong fell off the AC power adaptor AND my hard drive has been making suspicious noises

the late great, Friday, 13 April 2012 02:50 (twelve years ago) link

;_; we are now officially an all-Mac household as my 5 year old PC died two nights ago

really hope I can salvage the hard drive (thank God I had my iTunes library on an external disk)

macbook pro imminent death watch:

the keyboard / mouse suddenly stopped working until i rebooted. the mouse pointer was on the screen and the text cursor was blinking but i couldn't do anything, even the caps lock light wasn't coming on when i was tapping it.

i did a full cold power cycle and it fixed the keyboard/mouse thing but now my screen inverts the colors when i tap on it.

guess some wires are busted.

people who have the new ipad, what are the file sizes of new retina enabled apps like? I'm probably going to get one in the next few weeks and i'm debating 16 vs 32.

I would also like the answer to this question.

love the new rumors today about macbook pros at wwdc

"ok, well the april release rumors are proven false, which proves they're definitely going to release it at wwdc"

the late great, Saturday, 28 April 2012 21:02 (twelve years ago) link

Am hoping for iPad mini at wwdc. Also a slim down non-fat format for apps because the retina ones are massive.

Apple, for instance, was among the first tech companies to designate overseas salespeople in high-tax countries in a manner that allowed them to sell on behalf of low-tax subsidiaries on other continents, sidestepping income taxes, according to former executives. Apple was a pioneer of an accounting technique known as the “Double Irish With a Dutch Sandwich,” which reduces taxes by routing profits through Irish subsidiaries and the Netherlands and then to the Caribbean. Today, that tactic is used by hundreds of other corporations — some of which directly imitated Apple’s methods, say accountants at those companies.

Have read this exact same story about Google I'm pretty sure. Dropping in the quote from the community college president blaming California's budget crisis on Apple's accounting is some classy journalism right there.

raw feel vegan (silby), Monday, 30 April 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago) link

The magic of taxes are basically that states and the federal government have baked enough loopholes in that were there to encourage business of one sort or another that companies that are national or international can jump through them and get taxed less by expanding their financial web.

mh, Monday, 30 April 2012 19:16 (twelve years ago) link

The size issue for Retina apps is basically another media invention. The reason Garageband and iMovie got so much larger in the last update was because of new features / themes, not because of the graphics.

Your Favorite Album in the Cutout Bin, Monday, 30 April 2012 19:37 (twelve years ago) link

tbh I don't know if "loopholes" really does the issue justice. Certainly you have jurisdictions that have made corporate tax rates extra low to "attract business" but the problem is really the ease with which a modern global corporation can take advantage of its global reach to avoid taxes, especially a tech corp. "Loophole" implies there's some little clause in the tax code that can just be changed or removed. This seems much harder to deal with than that.

i don't believe in zimmerman (Hurting 2), Monday, 30 April 2012 19:38 (twelve years ago) link

I'm a software developer. Loopholes are very, very structurally relevant when you have a large infrastructure -- like our entire tax code -- using them extensively.

imo you either have to do an intense reworking of large portions of the tax system or throw out most of what we have in the US and rewrite it from the ground up -- but everyone who wants to do the latter is a nut like Herman Cain or Steve Forbes

mh, Monday, 30 April 2012 19:41 (twelve years ago) link

The problem though is that it's not just one tax code, it's one federal, fifty states and 100-something foreign countries. You'd have to get some crazy level of international cooperation to really address it fully.

i don't believe in zimmerman (Hurting 2), Monday, 30 April 2012 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, certainly. Any money made abroad is a lost cause, but anything inside the US might be able to be stomped at the federal level. Is a company doing business in California but existing for Nevada for tax purposes by definition engaged in interstate commerce?

mh, Monday, 30 April 2012 20:45 (twelve years ago) link

A company "doing business" in California will pay tax on the "business" that it does in California, as I understand it, but how that's actually defined is trickier.

i got an iPad 3 for my birthday. Thanks, PP! I wanted one with 4G this time around so I took it to the apple store and of course they forced me to go through a setup tutorial. The dude shows me Dictation and wants me to try it out during which several people, who may or may not have worked there, were thoroughly entertained by the completely incorrect text resulting from my Australian accent and then again by the different but just as wrong text results using my faux american accent (which is really just me talking a lot louder with a twang and lots of rrrrrrrs on the end of words). Why you all laughing at me when its your product fucking up fucking lames

On the other hand, GREAT CTHULHU WHEN IS APPLE GOING TO RELEASE THE NEW MACBOOK PRO? MINE IS 5 YEARS OLD AND VERY TIRED. WANT NEW SHINY THING BECAUSE I WORK ON IT AND GENERATES MONEY FOR OTHER COOL THINGS.

It's just that I have to grit teeth until the Ivy Bridge-powered MBPs are released. It's significant enough of an architecture improvement that it's worth the wait. I think HP might have already announced theirs, I'm just waiting for the white smoke to appear on the roof of 1 Infinite Loop.
