The video at the end of that is kind of amazing.

Thinking of starting a Hey Nick! thread.

i've been listening to those podcasts about the history of rome that you guys recommended and i LOVE THEM. sometimes they're a little hard to follow (because the stories are so crazy and full of people), but i think he does a good job of recapping highlights and speaking slowly enough for the brain to catch up with the ears. still, i could never ever listen to this while doing something else and expect to pass a comprehension check afterwards.

also? nice to hear ancient history being told by someone who is not ancient.

Cool, I haven't actually started listening to the History of Rome podcast bcz I am drowning in a sea of podcasts, but I'll get on it. I did listen to The Rats in the Walls episode of The Horror earlier in the week, and it was AWESOME.

Can I just say that usually when I change my display name to a terrible pun, I feel vaguely embarrassed about it within a few days, but for some reason I really like "Cuba Pudding, Jr."

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:05 (twelve years ago) link

Would be a great name for a restaurant.

Brando Ambassador (Eazy), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:06 (twelve years ago) link

Only thing on the menu: small portions of natilla.

The AV Club forgot one great 4 a.m. bar, though -- The Green Mill. It's not full of loud assholes at closing time, it's full of jazzbos. They insist on quiet while the after-hours band is playing, and they're very good at kicking people out who are slobbering drunk. So it's both late-night and stayin' classy.

cue "White Rabbit" (kenan), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:17 (twelve years ago) link

is the history of rome podcast in chronological order? ie do i have to start with episode 1?

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:33 (twelve years ago) link

yeah

two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:33 (twelve years ago) link

Green Mill on Friday nights can be funny though, or at least it was years ago when I was there -- lots of business folks who had gone drinking after work and so were completely gone by 1 a.m., combined with the regulars.

Brando Ambassador (Eazy), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

xp - also, maybe i am overstating this, but make sure you are in the mood to pay attention. there's not a lot of fluff/discussion/rumination, things just happen and happen and happen. sometimes at the end he sums up & analyzes but not a whole lot.

two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:35 (twelve years ago) link

sounds good, i'm getting annoyed at podcasts about serious topics that still have that overly light, fluffy tone. i'll give it a shot.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:39 (twelve years ago) link

I tried to listen to a history of Rome podcast once, I don't think it was the same one. Wow, it was boring.

Jeff, Friday, 6 April 2012 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

I'm liking Monocle's podcasts, especially The Urbanists, which has to do with city life around the world.

Brando Ambassador (Eazy), Friday, 6 April 2012 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

wow, the urbanist seems right up my alley, though tbh I'm not sure if can handle another podcast subscription

i think maybe i was overly ambitious in creating a spotify playlist of "the greatest songs ever of all time"

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 6 April 2012 16:40 (twelve years ago) link

i thought that was actually kinda funny, esp the pizza bit at the very end. also i love the thought of offerman as a grizzled cubs fan.

I keep forgetting to post this, but a few weeks ago I made a Spotify playlist of songs from 1994. It ended up being about 130 songs, iirc -- songs I liked at the time plus others I've discovered since. A handful are also plainly shitty, but I included them as a document of the era.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Friday, 6 April 2012 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

example of "plainly shitty"?

Daniel, I am off on this blessed day but I'm hanging out at home and watching horror movies.

carl agatha, Friday, 6 April 2012 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

going to a bar and watching baseball sounds delightful but i'm going to settle for following the white sox game online while at work and hanging out with my family (lame) after i get out

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 6 April 2012 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

I technically have a half day today, which means that I could conceivably leave in 30 minutes, but I think I'm going to stick around to finish the task I'm working on.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Friday, 6 April 2012 18:01 (twelve years ago) link

jenny, thank you for answering my american flag question

Silky Slim (dan m), Monday, 9 April 2012 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

You're welcome. I hope that helped in whatever your endeavors happened to be at that time.

carl agatha, Monday, 9 April 2012 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

If you want to see it, look up Ursula Martinez Hanky Panky. It's not a flag, though. It's a scarf.

carl agatha, Monday, 9 April 2012 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

I seem to recall discussing the video on ILX and that discussion evolving into jokes about pulling an American Flag out of our downstairs orifices. Although really, that's where like 90% of our discussions end up.

carl agatha, Monday, 9 April 2012 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

*pulls American flag out of butt*

carl agatha, Monday, 9 April 2012 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I totally thought it was the butt. I even searched my email on my phone and found a conversation from 2006 where I was telling T0mas about the upcoming performance.

Silky Slim (dan m), Monday, 9 April 2012 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

Hahaha

I tried to find the conversation but I'm bad at ILX searching. Maybe John can help.

It's okay to search "woman pulls scarf from vagina" at your work, right John?

carl agatha, Monday, 9 April 2012 20:52 (twelve years ago) link

I have no idea what you guys are talking about.
