it is a mile walk from BART to chez panisse
― the late great, Thursday, 5 April 2012 22:43 (twelve years ago) link
assuming your colleague can manage that i'd agree that it's worth a trip
if you go early in the afternoon there's a pretty good cheese shop across the street that makes very very good slices of pizza
― the late great, Thursday, 5 April 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link
Chez Panisse lost their Michelin star recently, right?
― polyphonic, Thursday, 5 April 2012 22:49 (twelve years ago) link
i looked up directions from where i'll be that afternoon and it said 45 min. anyway, was just wondering if the cafe was as good (we were thinking of springing for the real deal but no reservations available). will look up baywolf, too.
― tehresa, Friday, 6 April 2012 00:40 (twelve years ago) link
it's not an unpleasant stroll and there is no way that a 7 block walk would take 45 mins
― iatee, Friday, 6 April 2012 00:45 (twelve years ago) link
okay 9 blocks still, I used to live around there and there is no way the walk from downtown berk bart was 45 mins
― iatee, Friday, 6 April 2012 00:47 (twelve years ago) link
no. 45 min total from where i'll be in sf to the restaurant.
― tehresa, Friday, 6 April 2012 00:47 (twelve years ago) link
i am not a lazy asshole and i don't mind walking a mile.
oh okay that makes more sense and might even be a little optimistic
― iatee, Friday, 6 April 2012 00:49 (twelve years ago) link
on an absolute scale the cafe is not as good, but given price and convenience it is quite good in itself
i think though at that price point there is are a lot of other options that are as good, which i don't think is the case w/ chez panisse itself
― the late great, Friday, 6 April 2012 02:11 (twelve years ago) link
if i were visiting SF and i had to pick one fancy restaurant to eat at i might pick zuni cafe, but i'm not really a foodie so i don't know if that's a great pick
― the late great, Friday, 6 April 2012 02:12 (twelve years ago) link
it was expensive but not quite as much as chez panisse iirc
i don't eat $$$ food very often though, i'm much more a $ type of guy
― the late great, Friday, 6 April 2012 02:14 (twelve years ago) link
I haven't been to a fancy restaurant in a while, but Frances is about a million times better than Chez Panisse Cafe (or Zuni)--or at least it was the last time I went there 2 or so years ago.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 6 April 2012 02:51 (twelve years ago) link
They still appear to have their Michelin star for whatever that is worth as well.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 6 April 2012 02:52 (twelve years ago) link
MY new fave in SF is State Bird Provisions, in the Fillmore. They do sort-of fancy Dim-Sum-style dining, and everything I had there was *more* yummy than it sounded on the menu, which is the opposite of most of my dining experiences lately.
― schwantz, Friday, 6 April 2012 15:53 (twelve years ago) link
"sort-of fancy Dim-Sum-style dining"
Is this another way of saying they are a small plates restaurant?
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 6 April 2012 16:15 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, but they also bring dishes around on carts/trays (or you can just order them, sight-unseen, if you wish).
― schwantz, Friday, 6 April 2012 16:18 (twelve years ago) link
Pics on Yelp look pretty tasty.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 6 April 2012 17:21 (twelve years ago) link
It was really really good. First time in a while that I paid a bunch for a meal and wasn't disappointed.
― schwantz, Friday, 6 April 2012 18:31 (twelve years ago) link
Frances is friggin' excellent. My new favorite is the unfortunately named Starbelly.
I will definitely check out State Bird Provisions.

"My new favorite is the unfortunately named Starbelly."
I refuse to eat at that restaurant just cuz of the crappy name (apparently it has nothing to do with Dr. Seuss either which makes it even more of an affront) but my wife has eaten there and enjoyed it.

Tintype portrait studio. One of you locals should go and tell me if they're cool before I book an appointment if I get to visit SF this summer.

Anyone know how to change your address on your driving licence if you're moving out of the US? Or don't they need to know? The website says you can't do it online if you have a non-US address (or if you don't have a SS number, which I don't) and indicates you should fill in & post a form... which has no space for a non-US address and is one of those machine-read things so you can't write outside of the spaces provided. I hate the DMV!! I don't want to call them as you can never get through and they always give me wrong info anyway.
― kinder, Sunday, 15 April 2012 18:26 (twelve years ago) link
what use would a US drivers license be to you in a foreign country if you aren't a US citizen?
― sarahell, Sunday, 15 April 2012 18:32 (twelve years ago) link
I can (I think) drive in the UK with it.
― kinder, Sunday, 15 April 2012 18:35 (twelve years ago) link
Also I'd rather they didn't send letters to my US address if I'm not there - hassle for my landlady to forward/return them.
― kinder, Sunday, 15 April 2012 18:36 (twelve years ago) link
it might be something you have to do in person at the DMV.
― sarahell, Sunday, 15 April 2012 18:38 (twelve years ago) link
Every time I talk to the DMV they act as though I'm the first person from another country to ever get a driving licence. First time I went there they actually told me I couldn't get one because I didn't have a SSN and my husband would have to drive me around. FFS!

Is there a good website for shows/gallery exhibits/etc.?
I'm going to be in SF from June 6 to 12, one night is taken up with a Giants game, but I wouldn't mind going to see a show that Saturday.

so while sf is not my favorite city in the world, i thought the outer areas were really nice (mostly just from driving through them) and i'm crazy jealous that you have mountains and ocean so close. union square/edge of tenderloin really does suck.

I stayed at the Hotel Carlton and didn't mind that part of the Tenderloin. Very close to Van Ness for the busses, decent dive bars, etc.

from what everyone i interacted with told me, most of the reasonable hotels (ie, within budget and not sketchy) are in the union square area. i needed to be close to bart, etc.
― tehresa, Monday, 16 April 2012 03:27 (twelve years ago) link
it's just so times square-y and i was so busy that i didn't have time to go to other hoods for dinner most nights, so my stomach was very sad by the time i left.
