quite honestly this dude and his backing band may be my favorite singers I've discovered this year

an independent online phenomenon (DJP), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 14:46 (eleven years ago) link

just watched both snl songs, it is in fact possible to sound really good on that show i guess.

i really like his singing too, ultimately i couldn't quite get into the album but i have absolutely no issue with this guy blowing up.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link

Same here. A lot of the album doesn't really work for me, but the songs I like I really like.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 14:53 (eleven years ago) link

my first listen to the album was basically "this isn't really hitting me, but I don't hate this"

listening to it now and it still doesn't hang together but it's more enjoyable than my first listen

lol what the hell

some dude, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 15:32 (eleven years ago) link

'some bobby that I used to know' is the punchline iirc

dayo, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 15:33 (eleven years ago) link

also they were GREAT on SNL; the backup harmonies were so tight that on my first view I thought they were all pre-recorded (mostly because the camera work was all in close-ups and didn't show the other other three people singing)

three? i only saw one of the other dudes singing backup, pretty sure there were some backing vocal tracks. like this one is obviously stuffed with pre-recorded vox: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YzGOq42zLk

it doesn't really bother me, just saying.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link

the drummer was singing and so was the dude with the xylophone; the guitarist had a mic but I couldn't tell if he ever sang or not

an independent online phenomenon (DJP), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link

I read that the single was the guy singing on one note, and the melody was all manipulation.

Mark G, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

Same them live a week or two ago, and they were surprisingly solid. It's a seamless mix of live instruments and samplers, a bunch of pre-recorded stuff being triggered and manipulated, plus guys strumming and hitting things.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 15:58 (eleven years ago) link

i enjoy the "band in little room" thing with everyone singing. not perfect but fun imo- for comparison

The SNL performance sounds pretty good, even given the crappy audio quality of the youtube clip I'm listening to.

(FWIW, I liked the solo Kimbra album from last year a whole lot. Not that I haven't said it before, but with Gotye hitting SNL with Kimbra, I thought I'd mention it again.)

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 16:00 (eleven years ago) link

Not that she particularly stole the show. Actually, he sounded a lot better. (Not that she should steal the show on his song, but again, she just sounded okay really.)

haha I just wanted to go back to this because I am thinking back to the whole Lana Del Rey argument and going "JUSTIFIED!" to myself

an independent online phenomenon (DJP), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 16:09 (eleven years ago) link

lol yeah that was what i was thinking of (as the most recent example at least)

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 17:14 (eleven years ago) link

i was too busy thinking of The Outfield and Lou Gramm to considering the Police when this guy was on SNL

da croupier, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 17:18 (eleven years ago) link

there's even that part when he goes "your looove"

lol on my plane ride back home the other day i was sitting next to a woman with a young kid and when this video popped up on the tv screen she shielded it with her hand so the kid wouldn't see it

i mean kimbra's cute (so is gotye per my gf) but....

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 17:25 (eleven years ago) link

I still think her album is good. Nyeh.

That video is about as scandalous as a Wendy's commercial.

true re: police/outfield, i guess the lyrics just weren't pretentious enough for me to think of sting

da croupier, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:00 (eleven years ago) link

i figured it would be pronounced like "goiter" but without the "er"

yuppie bullshit chocolate blogbait (contenderizer), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:04 (eleven years ago) link

I started a dumb thread once about the singer from The Outfield vs. Sting vs. someone else with that kind of voice (can't remember who, now).

Oh yeah, Colin Hay!
TS: Colin Hay (Men at Work) vs. Tony Lewis (The Outfield) vs. Sting (The Police)

yuppie bullshit chocolate blogbait (contenderizer), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:06 (eleven years ago) link

It's pronounced more or less like "goat-ee-yay," like Jean-Paul Gautier. Per Wiki:

Wouter "Wally" De Backer (born 21 May 1980), also known professionally by his stage name Gotye (pronounced /ˈɡɒti.eɪ/) is a Belgian-Australian multi-instrumental musician and singer-songwriter. The name "Gotye" is derived from "Gaultier", the French equivalent of "Wouter" ("Walter" in English).

So it's sort of this weird Anglo-French colloquial nickname or something. Wally to Walter to Wouter to the French equivalent of Wouter, or Gaultier.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:07 (eleven years ago) link

too many syllables

billstevejim, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:11 (eleven years ago) link

It looks like it should be pronounced "Goat-y" but I guess it kind of functions as a shibboleth for those who are hip to the Goatye phenomenon, whether they know how to pronounce it correctly.

lol Gotye won the trivia nite that Chaki hosts every monday nite at a bar in SF:

(10:14:19 AM) chaki: So last night @ trivia this nerdy dude comes in and proceeds to answer every question right. I'm like who the fuck is this guy and we end up talking about old exotica records for hours. It turns out it's international pop star GOTYE. Dude knows his shit.

I somehow did not hear this song until SNL, heh. Along with the Sting comparisons, its production reminds me of mid-80s Peter Gabriel, or even Mike & the Mechanics, ha.

A friend told me it reminds them of this. Wish I could find a clip of their studio version, but it's a decent example:

some dude, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:36 (eleven years ago) link

this song has apparently sold over half a million copies in this past week

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 23:35 (eleven years ago) link

Gotye-adjacent I guess - just realised one of his touring band members is Tim Shiel aka Faux Pas/Time Shield who does pretty, glitchy, sample-heavy electronica with throwbacks to proggy 70's jams and 80's funk and such.

Most of it is hit-or-miss but I really liked this from a few years ago - basically filled the magical space that Lindstrom vacated after WYGIGT.
