It's pronounced more or less like "goat-ee-yay," like Jean-Paul Gautier. Per Wiki:

Wouter "Wally" De Backer (born 21 May 1980), also known professionally by his stage name Gotye (pronounced /ˈɡɒti.eɪ/) is a Belgian-Australian multi-instrumental musician and singer-songwriter. The name "Gotye" is derived from "Gaultier", the French equivalent of "Wouter" ("Walter" in English).

So it's sort of this weird Anglo-French colloquial nickname or something. Wally to Walter to Wouter to the French equivalent of Wouter, or Gaultier.

too many syllables

It looks like it should be pronounced "Goat-y" but I guess it kind of functions as a shibboleth for those who are hip to the Goatye phenomenon, whether they know how to pronounce it correctly.

lol Gotye won the trivia nite that Chaki hosts every monday nite at a bar in SF:

I somehow did not hear this song until SNL, heh. Along with the Sting comparisons, its production reminds me of mid-80s Peter Gabriel, or even Mike & the Mechanics, ha.

Gotye-adjacent I guess - just realised one of his touring band members is Tim Shiel aka Faux Pas/Time Shield who does pretty, glitchy, sample-heavy electronica with throwbacks to proggy 70's jams and 80's funk and such.

Most of it is hit-or-miss but I really liked this from a few years ago - basically filled the magical space that Lindstrom vacated after WYGIGT.

i actually did give gotye a chance. i watched SNL on dvr last night and found it pretty good/charming

too many reads

it's a good piece, but there's an alternative theory that chris didn't really explore: millenials are getting older and more interested in the kind of adult-pop boomers liked as they got older. I don't hear "alternative" here, I hear Don McLean & the Outfield. While he hints at it later in the piece, it's possible the songs are more pop songs that cross-over to the piddly remainder of alternative rock radio than vica versa.

admittedly my perspective is tainted by the fact that I think both these songs are barf.

I'm pretty sure it isn't nostalgia talking when I claim "All That Money Wants" and "Peek a Boo" are more outré than anything coughed up by the late nineties modern rock chart.
