I had help

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 14:48 (eighteen years ago) link

I suspected as much.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 15:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Hello Glasgow. Me and Steve will be coming to visit you lot on the July of 22nd, and leaving you on the 25th the July. We wouldn’t mind being ‘put up’, in fact our budgets demand it. We will, of course, shower you. With nice things.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 15:19 (eighteen years ago) link

That sounds weird. Don't use it.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 15:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Isn't 148 going to be out of action? I could provide accommodation, but I am, shall we say, not terribly central. I'm sure someone will offer something better.

The knackeredness disguised as hangover mutated into a hangover somewhere around eleven o'clock. I therefore made the wise move today of booking a day of annual leave the day after the Ned/Dot to Dot summit.

Madchen may have been misleading you all with the two weeks till NedFAP line she was peddling last night. Too much IPA young lady, it's definitely three weeks.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 15:48 (eighteen years ago) link

my hangover still hasn't kicked in. this means i'm either a) rock or b) on the fast track to alcoholism. or, perhaps, c) still pissed.

and yes, you're right: it's definitely three weeks till nedFAP. which is just as well because next week i have a two-night pan-scotland booze marathon, and no time off work. my poor liver needs all the rest it can get.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 16:16 (eighteen years ago) link

How many times did ailsa say "I didn't think anybody read what I posted"?

Anyway, it was grebt (I can't believe I managed to pronounce that) to meet you all. I will be Trying Glasgow More again in the summer, I suspect, after today's meeting.

I wasn't hung over at all. I put this down to alcoholism.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 17:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh no! I can't believe people remember what I say in the pub!

Haha, I totally forgot about "grebt". I also put this down to alcoholism.

I still remain staggered that there exists an ILXor who doesn't know who Ned is (even though his doppelganger was at the bar). Three weeks time, this will be put to rights, I'm sure.

Can we not pick the D&M next time - bar staff far too insistent on observing drinking up times, rubbish seating arrangements, Escheresque path to the ladies loo. Also proximity to station = I don't need to leave just yet to get the train --> oops I missed the train.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 18:01 (eighteen years ago) link

if it's a week day i suggest the living room, just up the road. it looks well posh inside, but i think it's quite cheap, with amazingly cheap grub as well.. something like 1.50 starters, 3.50 mains and 1pound desert! plus they have these enormous 10-seater booths that you can close off with curtains! mmmmmm

dahlin (dahlin), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 22:14 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't remember it being that cheap

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 22:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a spare room with a comfy bed and should have a new bathroom by then too, Lixi & Stevem. I also have a *CAR* and can pick you up from the airport, if that is how you're coming, as long as it fits with my working hours. Is that luxe enough for you?

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 11:22 (eighteen years ago) link

That sounds more than marvellous. I think we may have to get teh train from the airport, i think the times are not work friendly. I never even knew you could drive. Whatever next?

In other news: I have spilled very orange food down my pale green top.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 11:34 (eighteen years ago) link

that's not like you.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 11:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Burp.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 11:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Filth. Ah, it looks like you're coming in to Prestwick anyway. I haven't driven that far yet - I only got it last night. The first thing I did was go to Sainsbury's and buy way more than I could ever carry on the bus.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 11:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Haha. I think I would have done something similar, possibly also driving very slowly past a bus stop near a supermarket and laughing at the people waiting. I thought that Prestwick was the only airport in Glasgow anyway?

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 12:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Prestwick isn't anywhere *near* Glasgow. They call it "Glasgow Prestwick" so they can roffle at tourists coming off planes wondering when Glasgow became a deserted coastal backwater under the banner "Pure Dead Brilliant".

The *actual* Glasgow Glasgow Airport is in Inchinnan, near Paisley, 8 miles from Glasgow. It doesn't have a train station.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 12:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Prestwick is only 5 miles closer to central Glasgow than Edinburgh airport (thanks AA).

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 12:44 (eighteen years ago) link

it's a nice drive out from glasgow to prestwick, though. well: as nice as zooming through ayrshire gets. ok, the scenery's not the most exciting but it's quite a fun road (at least, it was at 6.30am on saturday, which was the last time i did it). and, ahem, i don't think there are any cameras. maybe one.

christ, i'm turning into an A77 bore. fuck.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 12:45 (eighteen years ago) link

The most important question though, is how much does a ticket cost? and possibly how long does the train take?

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 12:48 (eighteen years ago) link

train tickets are teh fux-all from what i remember. but whatever you do, don't arrive on a sunday. it's all specially timed so the train leaves just as you're pegging it along the walkway thing, meaning you have to wait for an hour under the stairs in a stinky wee metal shed. brr, i hate prestwick.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 12:52 (eighteen years ago) link

o, and it takes

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 12:52 (eighteen years ago) link

fucking hell. that didn't work, obviously. what i meant to say was: the train takes less than an hour.

or you can pay something horrific like 35 quid for a cab.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 12:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Also: if you're coming in on Ryanair, show your boarding pass on the train for a half-price discount. Not many people know this, sometimes including the guards so be arsy if required. It does exist, honestly, and I think the end price is less than a fiver.

The trains are quite nice when you're on them, and do whizz you to Central, but like Fiendish says the Sunday service is plums.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 13:48 (eighteen years ago) link

although unlike wot he did, there's no obligation to wait in teh smelly shed: you can go back into the 1960s wonderama of an airport and pay £17 for a cup of tea.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 13:50 (eighteen years ago) link

the 1960s wonderama airport with its £17 tea is actually marginally more depressing than the shed.

this conversation actually happened, about a year ago, when i was flying to dublin.

me: "hello there, mr food bloke. can i have one of those pies?"
bloke: "no."
me: "?!"
bloke: "pies is lunch food. we're only doing breakfast now."
me: "what time does lunch start?"
bloke: "noon."
me: "it's 11.58."
bloke: "yus. breakfast time."
me: "look. the pie's sitting there. why can't i have it?"
bloke [not arsey, just painfully shocked]: "but ... but ... pies is lunch food. before noon is breakfast."
me: "right."
[taps foot, whistles, scratches arse for two minutes]
me: "can i have that pie, please?"
bloke: "certainly, sir. that'll be £8."

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 13:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Maybe he got arsey at being called Mr Food Bloke.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:06 (eighteen years ago) link

If your train is due in 15 minutes and it's not worth going back into the airport, stay on the bridge where it's warmer and dryer and look down the track. When you see your train coming (you can see the next station along the line from up there), stroll down the escalator and out onto the platform, beating the people in the cold shed who won't have spotted it yet. I've flown from Prestwick a few times before, can you tell?

I think it's £2.60 single if you've got your Ryanair printout. You have to have the bit of paper - they won't accept "this is my booking reference" as proof, even though it's good enough for the airline.

Also, I'm sure you already know that Prestwick Airport is the only place in Britain ever visited by Elvis.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:07 (eighteen years ago) link

i love the prestwick airport!

probably one of my top 10 funnest moments was on the train from prestwick going into glasgow, my sister and I were talking about something dumb and we were laughing so hard we were weeping...

i want a ride in jason! maybe we could take a swing by a garden centre, as i need dirt and am too embarassed to go out back with a spoon to get some.
(and RJG, you were right, as always. i was reading the children's menu. which led to an amusing - and ultimately expensive - misunderstanding at lunch today)

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Maybe he got arsey at being called Mr Food Bloke.

[abandons plan for lengthy and unfunny thing about the noble family line of "food-bloke"; settles instead for going ":p"]

Also, I'm sure you already know that Prestwick Airport is the only place in Britain ever visited by Elvis.

yeh. no wonder he decided to go off and live on the moon.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:17 (eighteen years ago) link

jason!

this is the car's name, right?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm sure you already know that Prestwick Airport is the only place in Britain ever visited by Elvis.
Which is probably why they keep it like that. "Ooohh! Elvis looked at this sign! We'll never wash it again". I mean, a manual departures board. Well, really.

xpost

grimly if you're willing to pay £8 for a pie than you deserve contempt from the surly relinquishers of said baked goods.

Jason is a good Greek name.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:37 (eighteen years ago) link

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:51 (eighteen years ago) link

i think.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Jason? Keep well clear of dockyards, Madchen...

stet (stet), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 15:25 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought you were going to call it the Argo?

I have tons of free time to take off work and can easily come down to Prestwick to get you in my sadly-nameless Fiesta. The A77 is a fab road and even if it wasn't it's better than being in work. If anyone wants to come with me and tie it in with a visit to a garden centre, there are two very nice ones in the vicinity of Prestwick.

Alternatively, if your flight times are not that work-friendly, you can get off the Prestwick-Glasgow train at Paisley and I can skive off work and show you some "lovely" pubs until Madchen gets out of work. (Madchen, should I take them to Langs?)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 15:38 (eighteen years ago) link

In fact, if you aren't coming until 22nd July I might not even *have* a job to skive off by then.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 15:39 (eighteen years ago) link

xx post.

a cab to glasgow from prestwick will actually set you back about £70 so don't do it. i got one once in an emergency and nearly had a heart attack when presented with the total.

the facilities at prestwick have actually improved quite a bit recently. they're pretty much on a par with the awfulness that is glasgow airport's catering now.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:00 (eighteen years ago) link

But hey, there's not much fog at Prestwick!

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:04 (eighteen years ago) link

train from prestwick airport to glasgow central, what, £7 return, plus you get a discount with your boarding pass, or have I missed something?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:09 (eighteen years ago) link

I just noticed Gerry slipped the word "roffle" into a sentence up there. Good work, sir.

Cozen, the thing you have missed is that we are being *nice* to our visitors. And I want a skive off work.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:35 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't even know who is visiting.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:50 (eighteen years ago) link
