because it sounds like the type of dance music you would expect to hear at a trendy cafe

It fits into the same nebulous universe (although not genre) of The xx as understood by people who described them as fancy-dinner-party music.

Experimental music that has an air of tastefulness about it (but not necessarily in a bad way)

fans doing a good job of sounding like haters imo. even if there is a commonality in sound on occasion then dawn still brings the forward motion and sense of danger to render the point unnecessarily unflattering

Oh! I mean.

I wouldn't necessarily describe it as such. I was classifying that sort of description into the same 'universe' of descriptors.

My words aren't working today.

Experimental music that has an air of tastefulness about it (but not necessarily in a bad way)

I think tracks like "Bombs" and "Automatic" upend that air. I could see Armor On appealing to the messenger-bag crowd if those songs weren't on it, though.

Evan R, Thursday, 19 April 2012 20:31 (eleven years ago) link

Very nice short piece on Armour On by Lex at The Guardian:

Haha, Dawn's now been written up in The Village Voice, The Guardian, FACT and Pitchfork, all by ilxors.

We do have some small influence when we set our minds to it.

(that's just the normal length of non-lead guardian album reviews)

It's not meant to be unflattering, and yes tracks like Bombs and Automatic break the pattern, it's more that Dawn and Druski are talented enough to make good on a sound palette that would be pretty drab in the hands of lesser artists.

Dating_site_agelessdate.com..

It was surprisingly good—a lavish collage of contemporary dance and
electronic sounds that was infinitely more sophisticated than anybody
could have expected from a project called Diddy-Dirty Money.

someone tweeted me earlier today asking whether the dawn richard EP was really that good - they were suspicious of it because...

...

...they were such a massive danity kane fan

i didn't really see that reason coming

hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Thursday, 26 April 2012 06:00 (eleven years ago) link

Great interview.

When can we expect the album?

Well, the great thing is now I have options.

You have the numbers.

Oh my God, the numbers! And the pudding is right there. We can either milk this EP—I kind of want to do something really, really clever with maybe doing a different kind of re-release. I’m not going to say what, but I think—what we’re deciding to do is, always do a little bit different in our movement. There'll probably be something right before the album, maybe Fall.

Awesome to hear she's encouraged by the numbers, whatever they actually are. Good incentive for her to keep heading down the awesome path she's on.

Evan R, Monday, 30 April 2012 20:03 (eleven years ago) link

well i think when you put something out with no label and no radio airplay and it does any kind of numbers to get onto the Billboard 200 and the iTunes charts, that opens some industry doors, or at the very least helps fund a larger budget for the next phase if it stays DIY

some dude, Monday, 30 April 2012 20:08 (eleven years ago) link

hang on, this got to no 1 on the R&B chart? is that...what i think it is, or is it less impressive than that?

anyway she made a lyric booklet for us http://www.rap-up.com/2012/04/25/download-dawn-richard-armor-on-lyric-book/

Not crazy about "Bombs" tbh

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 30 April 2012 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

^ It's less impressive and more niche, I think, like when a podcast host doesn't make the New York Times best seller list but brags about his Amazon sales rank. But Al is otm; it's still something to point to

I put this on my "best of 2012" Spotify playlist and then kind of ignored it for a couple of weeks

I came back to it today and holy shit, I like this even more than I did when I first played it

'Faith' is big, but there's something about the climax of the song at the end that trips me up a bit. It's like the drums come in half a beat later than expected. I've only listened to it a couple of times, mind.

Also, 'Black Lipstick' and 'Bombs' are a really cool 1-2 at the beginning. Some of the deeper cuts have yet to connect with me, but I'm willing to put more effort in. Also, SMFU is amazing.

Mercer Finn, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 04:40 (eleven years ago) link

SMFU is one of my favs; I love how minor it is. It's just this moving little song tucked toward the back of the album, a breather of sorts before the finale

Evan R, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 05:23 (eleven years ago) link

It's all about Change for me. It's the wibbly wobbly Four Tet remix singing bells in the background with those subtle firework vocal harmonies at the front.

Surprised you like Faith so much, Lex. It has a slight touch of the Calvin Harris fake-rave to it. It's those handclaps that annoy me. Like guys, I live the sound of the Roland as much as anyone, but what was great about the TR series was you could change the strike velocity for a good build. Try it with those damn handclaps instead of having them on 10 the whole time!

But this is a minor quibble with an otherwise amazing album. There's not a duff song here. Even the slow burners. Especially thd slow burners. I mean - Scripture? DAMN!

Narco Martenot (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 07:42 (eleven years ago) link

i listened to the new track once & it was awesome but this dreadful working-in-an-office stint is so unconducive to listening to music, i don't know how people cope

i think i love "faith" a lot because of its position in the album - it's a tremendous work of build-and-release in its own right but also within the context of the whole thing. i wouldn't nec isolate it as the album's most impressive song ("black lipstick" or "scripture" imo) but the sheer rush it elicits is perhaps armor on's most impressive moment

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 09:39 (eleven years ago) link

OTM, 'Faith' works because there's only one of it and it's perfectly timed within the flow of the album. It's like dropping a big anthem at exactly the right point in a DJ set as opposed to just playing back-to-back big anthems with deadening effect.

i think "smfu" (the non-remix) was a single before "december sky" but none of us noticed it at the time. dawn keeps tweeting cryptic things that make me hopeful that a video for "automatic" might be imminent?

Oh! the new track has that singing bowls sound that I was loving so much on it.

Also crazy disco string arpeggios. I am loving the attention to detail on the production of this thing.

new track is brilliant.

she said on twitter it was swapped from the EP for "change", which was prob the right decision thematically
