I thought there was something about it signifying his cheating (like he had bought her gifts after being caught cheating on her before...?) I can't remember honestly
― Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 18:38 (eleven years ago) link
I couldn't remember either so I googled for a recap: where Don is clearly still under the romantic spell from the trip, and Betty just as clearly is not, so when he asks what's wrong, she gives it to him: "I hate this place. I hate our friends, I hate this town." Dangling London in front of her is looking like a mistake in retrospect. And how ironic is it that now that Don really can't run away, Betty's the one feeling like she wants to? Don says the wrong thing, saying they'll go away again, and then asks her to look on her pillow. She obliges him, and finds a gold charm, which he says he'll have put on her bracelet. She nods sadly: "Then you can have something to look at, when I tell the story about the time we went to Rome." She heads into the bathroom, leaving him confused, and "There's A Small Hotel" appropriately kicks up as we go to credits.

Italy episode is one of my favorites-- its the last time we see Don and Betty happy together before the marriage eventually unravels iirc.
― ♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 17 May 2012 03:35 (eleven years ago) link
and yeah i think the whole trip/charm bracelet thing is Betty realizing vacation/escape isn't good enough, she needs an entirely different life in order to be happy, and that's impossible, which is still playing out with Henry etc

yeah they're like the dream versions of themselves in that episode. he's Cary Grant, she's Grace Kelly...it's a good one.

I watched the Actors Studio thing last night. The thing I hate most about that show when they have entire casts on is that nothing of any substance ever happens. The teen goth photos of Christina Hendricks were cute, though.

Finally watched the last episode and really didn't like how Megan interacted with her friend.
I also don't get why Megan in jealous of Betty. Is she? I can see why Betty is jealous of Megan.
Sally was great in this episode!
― *tera, Saturday, 19 May 2012 03:21 (eleven years ago) link
I felt the scene w/Megan and her friend was there to illustrate an unforseen (by her) problem about her new career path: is she hungry enough to compete w/her dues paying peers, or will her irl comfort fatally handicap her?

yeah, there megan seemed dismissively snobby for the first time

I don't know if she's jealous of her, except maybe to the extent that Betty still has a claim on Don's attention, affection, and loyalty. But she's certainly suspicious of her, and she's right to be.
― trishyb, Saturday, 19 May 2012 13:06 (eleven years ago) link
I think Don's "Betty's fat nose" comment (and the Anna--Sally thing) prove much of his goodwill towards Betts is now gone.
― Leslie Mann: Boner Machine (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 19 May 2012 13:13 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, I love that Sally has worked out that she can finally get her own back on Betty without getting herself into any trouble.
― trishyb, Saturday, 19 May 2012 13:31 (eleven years ago) link
I never thought Betty had much of Don's loyalty or affection unless she was about to die.
― *tera, Saturday, 19 May 2012 16:45 (eleven years ago) link
otoh it's kind of sad that she's basically learned how to do this from Betty herself.
That "Are you gonna make yourself cry?" bit with Megan was pretty spot-on Betty, too (amazing how well Kiernan Shipka channels January Jones in those moments).
― Roz, Sunday, 20 May 2012 04:46 (eleven years ago) link
like Megan's little condescending note to Betty when she found her in the house. What was it? Something like "You've seen everything" or "You've seen enough" or something.― dan selzer, Tuesday, May 15, 2012
I took this as "well you're never going to see the bedroom"

"like Megan's little condescending note to Betty when she found her in the house."
She let herself in and was clearing snooping around to satisfy her curiosity! I think a little condescension is appropriate.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Sunday, 20 May 2012 14:06 (eleven years ago) link
yeah it was an innocuous 'there really isn't much to see' comment about the apt (which in itself might be about megan's insecurity about don's wealth) w/ a heavy undertone of 'go fuck yrself bitch'.
