I "saw" Don Cab like two years ago and left after one song. It was Che and all these douchey rocker guys--I wonder if they are the same people who are on this record. Anyone else find it odd that Relapse is releasing this?

The first full US tour i ever did (back in '99), we did a few weeks with STLJ. Really nice guys. Great band.

Would loved to have seen them live.

I was working out and listening to my mp3 player and I have come to the conclusion that Don Caballero is like indie rock for body builders. I was listening to What Burns Never Returns and got laughing thinking of the notion of body builders getting really amped up listening to Don Cab and then going out side and flipping a Miyata.

Nostalgia'd my way into this thread and this video. I was at this show with a bunch of college friends and Sweep are forever legendary in our minds for this moment (watch until the end or ffwd).

did you ever see zzzz in your early Chicago days, with the sax/singer guy from stlj?

no :(

they weren't as good but were still fun. less punk, more "theatrical"?

See also the band Check Engine with Steve and Chris from Sweep, one album iirc, very good indeed.

True story. When I lived in a far west suburb back in 2001 I was in a laundromat one night and these dudes walked in with a friend with a camera and started taking what were clearly promo pictures. It was Check Engine. Even though I'd heard of STLJ at that point I'd never seen them to know the difference.

Battles. Where'd you see 'em at, Yanc3? I saw their first show (with Panthers and Les Savvy Fav) back in December at Northsix (not in September as reported in Pitchfork) and it was just kinda okay. Saw their third show about a month ago at Galapagos, and it was TONS better.

Damon Che's 'other' band The Speaking Canaries have a new album out and I just got it today. Supposedly its pieced together from jam sessions miles davis/teo macero style and its really good.

As always with TSC Damon on guitar rather than drums

I have all their releases inc the different mixes on vinyl and CD. You can get all the versions on bandcamp too now, but not the new album.

Surprised there's not much chat on them on this thread tbh. Maybe there's another thread on ILM that I posted about them on?

revived this one as I have been listening to sweep the leg johnny again recently

rest in peace, Steve Sostak of Sweep the Leg Johnny, incredible talent. also so many people I know have been sharing stories of how kind he was, how encouraging of younger musicians and bands

Makes me think of my friend EJL, who I mentioned on the obit thread on ILE -- a radio DJ first and foremost, but always encouraging, and always kind. Music needs these people.

I was wondering if this thread would emerge, it's been a rough couple of days.

Seeing people's stories popping up on his FB page has helped, but the thought of Steve no longer being in the world seems incalculable.

We shared a few stages, helped out, and hung out when they started coming to London over two decades ago (Check Engine too), it was an instant love affair between our little circle and the Sweep boys, they're still all very dear to my heart, old musician friends have been messaging back and forth in shared incredulity.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 8 February 2023 15:47 (one year ago) link

terribly sad but glad you got to know him

should also be said I will never forget seeing them for the first time and getting my head ripped clean off

This is how I heard about his passing too, I didn't know him personally but apparently we had several friends in common. Everyone makes him out to be a great guy. RIP
