pretty stupid not to have that set up for this weekend's weather

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 18 May 2012 22:24 (eleven years ago) link

Tell them it is stupid not to set up outdoor tables for this weekend's weather and just stand there in front of the hostess stand until they do something about it.

It was a bit of a clusterfuck last night. I was there two hours early and then the Bourbon Country went on at 7pm. The Coffee keg kicked in 18 minutes and the Bramble Rye bottles didn't last longer than half an hour.

Jeff, Saturday, 19 May 2012 15:27 (eleven years ago) link

Bourbon Country or Bourbon County?

mh, Saturday, 19 May 2012 15:58 (eleven years ago) link

Bourbon Country Cash Grab

Next event for me is mini-golf at the Goose Island barrel warehouse.

J@n schak0wsky was the keynote speaker at my graduation today! She was great and talked abt the fair pay act. She also danced in her seat when the band played. Good times.

She's so lovely.

I'm just going to come right out and say that I am skeptical of the prosecution in this case (also they are in good hands with their defense lawyer):

carl agatha, Monday, 21 May 2012 12:43 (eleven years ago) link

huh, story fails to note that the attackers were anti-racist action and attackees were white supremacists

still a crazy story

xp to j3553

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Monday, 21 May 2012 12:45 (eleven years ago) link

xp - I know! I got that info from the comments (which... I almost recommend for the one comment in which a white supremacist talks about how only the Aryan nation has true freedom of speech or something really confusing and wrong). Man, I'm not an avowed nonviolent person at all, but rolling up on people with bats and hammers is kind of not okay, even if those people are rotten, awful, disgusting people.

But back to my news coverage rant... What's pissing me off about all the Trib's coverage of the protests is that it's all about 1) arrests and 2) inconvenience. Nothing about what the folks might be protesting or why. Just shit like this:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/media/photo/2012-05/70036255.jpg

Which don't get me wrong, is a hilarious picture, but how about interviewing some of the leaders of the people out there chanting? Or if you're doing a human interest piece, throw in a paragraph about one of the actual protesters and what she's up to and what she thinks, etc.

carl agatha, Monday, 21 May 2012 12:50 (eleven years ago) link

won't someone please think of the commuters

I gotta say the WGN live coverage of ppl getting kettled & beaten yesterday was compelling and totally showed what a bunch of lameass talking heads modern tv "reporters" are

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Monday, 21 May 2012 12:56 (eleven years ago) link

My commute was awesome this morning.

Jeff, Monday, 21 May 2012 13:23 (eleven years ago) link

I don't know, I was watching some local coverage this weekend where they were talking to protestors and they chose literally the worst interviewees to show, people who just sort of stammered and hemmed and hawed without answering any of the questions. Which pisses me off, because I know there are tons of well-spoken, thoughtful protestors out there but they won't fit with the convenient narrative of "these people are young kids with no real end goals".

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 21 May 2012 13:23 (eleven years ago) link

We were walking home from the library on Saturday and found ourselves amid the protest march from Horner Park to Rahm's house. A middle-aged dude walking the opposite direction sneered, "Join the army, you assholes."

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Monday, 21 May 2012 13:25 (eleven years ago) link

That was rude. Yes, TV loves to edit together as many dopes as they can.

Well, I found a place in Wicker Park that was as cheap as all the other options, so that's where I'll be July 4th week.

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Monday, 21 May 2012 14:15 (eleven years ago) link

Don't think I need to explain to Chicago people that yr city is not the most accepting of protest-style activities and has a disturbing police culture

mh, Monday, 21 May 2012 14:22 (eleven years ago) link

yeah I had heard that!

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Monday, 21 May 2012 14:57 (eleven years ago) link

We are well aware. :(

Passed a group of legal observers on my way into the immediate care clinic this AM (still sick, antibiotics not working, beloved doc's office closed until Wed) and got sad that I wasn't involved. Then I got dizzy and went to the clinic.

carl agatha, Monday, 21 May 2012 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

:( sorry you're still sick!! that sucks.

game of crones (La Lechera), Monday, 21 May 2012 15:03 (eleven years ago) link

Thank you! And it's awful! But it's validating when a doc looks in my ears and makes a horrified hissing sound, though, and I got a more badass antibiotic so let's hope this works.

I highly recommend Michigan Ave. Immediate Care, btw. Clean, efficient, nice docs, nurses, and desk staff. And they have complimentary cough drops and granola bars. I was in and out in about as much time as it takes at the regular doc, although its a ghost town in the Loop today so that may not be representative.

carl agatha, Monday, 21 May 2012 15:39 (eleven years ago) link

I think DePaul sent me to that place to get vaccinated. Is it near the Art Institute?

I can't believe everyone's doctor is out for so long, presumably b/c of NATO.

Also, I'm worried about your ears.

Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 21 May 2012 15:51 (eleven years ago) link

It's at Michigan and Lake, so not quite.

They closed the office because of NATO and he opportunistically went on vacation. I could have gone to his practicemate's office in Hyde Park, but LSD is closed and it just seems like a massive hassle to get down there. It was my coworker's idea to go to the clinic, and it was probably the best idea she's ever had in her life.

I think my ears are behaving normally (for them), but the antibiotics I had just weren't the right ones. I am optimistic that I'll be better by Friday.

carl agatha, Monday, 21 May 2012 16:05 (eleven years ago) link

Doctor goes on opportunistic vacation instead of treating opportunistic infection. (not that yours is one, probably)

Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 21 May 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

If it is, I've got bigger problems than a probably hole in my tympanic membrane.

carl agatha, Monday, 21 May 2012 16:37 (eleven years ago) link

taking notes in case I get a sinus infection from flying back to chicago in a couple weeks :)

mh, Monday, 21 May 2012 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

I hope you don't! But if you do, MI Ave Immediate Care.

carl agatha, Monday, 21 May 2012 16:42 (eleven years ago) link

amazing pic. some hardcore punk or political rap group should use it for an album cover, putting their name where the judge mathis ad is

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 21 May 2012 18:02 (eleven years ago) link

Seriously, that is a great pic.

Speaking of a strong police presence, my entire building is surrounded by cops standing about three feet apart from each other.

carl agatha, Monday, 21 May 2012 18:03 (eleven years ago) link

I saw a color, wider-angle version of it earlier where the bus to the left was included saying "CHICAGO IS", along with like 2-3 more cops.

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Monday, 21 May 2012 18:04 (eleven years ago) link

Also not to make this thread Carl Agatha's Ear Infection Chronicles (worst memoir ever), but I can't hear low sounds, like I couldn't tell when the dryer was running yesterday and had to go put my hand on it to check, which means I can't hear stuff like HVAC noises or the trains going by or other rumbling building functions. And this place is emptier than I have ever seen it (and I've worked Christmas Eve) and it is uber creepy I basically feel like this:

http://unrealitymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/28-days-later.jpg

carl agatha, Monday, 21 May 2012 18:06 (eleven years ago) link

I want a print of that bigger color version of that photo.

carl agatha, Monday, 21 May 2012 18:06 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, that photo's awesome -- even the Judge Mathis ad adds to it, IMO.

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Monday, 21 May 2012 18:07 (eleven years ago) link

The "CHICAGO IS MY KIND OF TOWN" photo, not the 28 Days Later dude. xp

carl agatha, Monday, 21 May 2012 18:07 (eleven years ago) link

beautiful out today, esp. for you "i hate hot weather" people

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 21 May 2012 19:10 (eleven years ago) link

I agree!

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Monday, 21 May 2012 19:11 (eleven years ago) link

It messed up my hair.

Jeff, Monday, 21 May 2012 19:12 (eleven years ago) link

I didn't go outside at lunch due to the ring-o-cops.
