Most executives don't, though, to be fair to NBC (even though they're soulless cretins).

You know, I was going to talk about how much I enjoyed the last few episodes but instead I am just going to back away from this thread

Harmon was horrible at his job and only wanted to get fired and anyone who thinks otherwise is obviously a fan of Community.

I will say, I think these last three seasons have had a great arc of Troy growing up. From ditching his letter jacket to what he learns on his 21st birthday to his self-sacrifice/saving of Dan Bakkedahl/ removing the Dreamatorium and getting his own bedroom.
And finally picking a career direction to head in.

finally watched the last three. First two were alright but the last one was the best since timelines if not S2. Really bittersweet way to go out.

Dino Stamatopoulos @DinosThirdTwitt
Starburns wasn't officially dead until now. That'll get 'em. #danharmon
Fuck Sony. I know that they don't care about me, and I don't love acting, but I'd have done the part again ONLY if my friend wanted me to.
I used to get Sony VHS tapes and they always sucked. Switched to FUGI. Way better. No crinkling, better SLP playing. #FUCKSONY

good episodes this week but i'll go ahead and be the optimist about s4, Aliens In America was a good show. and in 5 months when you guys are putting every joke in the new episodes under the microscope, I will remind you that the Harmon regime was capable of shit as hacky as 'axel f on the keytar.'
― judas, a scary ho (some dude), Sunday, 20 May 2012 11:39 (eleven years ago) link
yeah maybe these guys will Chang your mind by ensuring that Chang is no longer the most irritating character on television at the moment
if that is possible, of course

- Leonard lives with Sexy Dreadlock Guy
they all look alike to you

some britisher thinks chang is the most irritating character on tv when the same timeslot has howard's mother on big bang theory. ilx.
― balls, Sunday, 20 May 2012 12:51 (eleven years ago) link
Pato is a cape-wearing Australian and as such you have hurt him in his heart. Which is likely the point, so carry on.

Would suspect Ludwig's not on contract. Ganz sayz:
No new information re: my job next season, but thanks for the support. I have high hopes they'll give me a free Season 3 DVD!
― ┗|∵|┓ (sic), Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:03 (eleven years ago) link
Thanks for the insight, "balls". Unfortunately, I consider that to be "hoarse screaming voice as unsuccessful comedic device" rather than any type of characterisation.
Or, as they say in Britain, up yer plums with a brass pole.
― Gentlemen Take Instagram Photos (King Boy Pato), Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:07 (eleven years ago) link
i totally expect the guy who watches 100 shows a year will tell us if s4 still makes the top 50.
― da croupier, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:09 (eleven years ago) link
the finale got the lowest ratings of the season, that's burn-off for you
― da croupier, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:14 (eleven years ago) link
i don't think sepinwall watches nearly that many shows and he liked aliens in america iirc though he already wrote his 'uh oh' column.
― balls, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:18 (eleven years ago) link
s3 was def sloppy, and I got more out of 3 shows on ABC this year (plus 30 Rock) than I did community, but has there ever been a case of a show creator getting fired three seasons in where the show actually improved?
― da croupier, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:19 (eleven years ago) link
3 shows on abc! dude i like revenge also but let's not get carried away here
― balls, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:21 (eleven years ago) link
ha! suburgatory, happy endings and apartment 23 (the last admittedly only a few episodes in). I loved the pilot of revenge but for some reason 5 minutes into the 2nd episode the Dawson's Creek-ness of the poor family running the restaurant made me bail.
― da croupier, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:24 (eleven years ago) link
some shows have definitely thrived w/o their creators, but "fired three seasons in" is a prohibitively specific criteria so no, probably not
xpost
― judas, a scary ho (some dude), Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:24 (eleven years ago) link
"fired three seasons in" is a prohibitively specific criteria
broaden it in to "where the creator was fired after a critically hailed run"
― da croupier, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:27 (eleven years ago) link
wait so you bailed before they revealed emily thorne's sensei?
― balls, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:28 (eleven years ago) link
possibly, though i reserve the right to catch up
― da croupier, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:29 (eleven years ago) link
Aw, really, croup? You loved s2 as much as I did but preferred Suburgatory and Apartment 23 to s3? I think we actually agreed on where the show was dropping off this season but I still thought there were enough great episodes.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:31 (eleven years ago) link
there were great episodes but I think those shows have been way more consistent and surprising. Admittedly they're in season 1 and not following my favorite season of TV experienced in real-time since the simpsons.
― da croupier, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:32 (eleven years ago) link
revenge is basically lost minus the scifi w/ the narration from desperate housewives but it's still fun, the only network drama i watch. so apt 23 was funny?
― balls, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:36 (eleven years ago) link
Suburgatory is great, but it might be funnier if you actually live in Chatswin.
― Mordy, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:37 (eleven years ago) link
apt 23 is like a more surreal, frothy Girls with James Van Der Beek jokes, basically.
― da croupier, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:38 (eleven years ago) link
My buddy Mo on Harmon is/can be a big dick, but how it's the job of NBC to deal with dicks to get good shows:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/maureen-ryan/dan-harmon-fired-community_b_1529588.html
Take away:
Look, creative types can be a real pain in the ass. There aren't a ton of showrunners who make the trains run on time, make something approaching art and are also nice to everyone (there are a few, and they are worth their weight in gold). But that's the business "creative" executives are in. It's messy, it's not easy, but if TV executives wanted to go into something more predictable and less stressful, why not try accounting?
― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:40 (eleven years ago) link
i think the s3 peaks (which admittedly i might be talking about 3 or 4 episodes here) hold their own w/ anything from s2 and the valleys might average better than the valleys from s1. parks dipped some this year also i thought (though i'm not one of those who had problems w/ the election plotline, if anything the opposite) but unlike last year where picking a winner between parks and community was more making a choice about what you think a sitcom should/could be than just judging who had the better year here it's pretty clear parks had the better year.
― balls, Sunday, 20 May 2012 13:42 (eleven years ago) link
i think you get away with being a crazy showrunner only if your show's a hit. Unless these corporate monoliths decide to speak up for themselves, I just have to assume Sony wants to squeeze out a few more syndication dollars before NBC finally pulls the plug.
were there really valleys in S1? The quality grew gradually, but I can't think of anything as annoying as Detective Chang in s1
