I mean, poor Sudekis and all, but you can't overlook that iirc, the only two cast members to leave SNL as famous as Kristin Wiig is leaving were like Chevy Chase and Eddie Murphy

Like I thought it was dumb at first too, but Carvey and Hartman and Ferrell and Fallon weren't starring in $250M-grossing films when they left

Joan Cusack?

Mike Myers could've gotten that kind of sendoff, but I think a quiet exit is what he wanted.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 27 May 2012 07:11 (eleven years ago) link

i thought sudekis was still undecided about coming back next season, probably because he'd be doing romney at least up until the election or even after who knows.

slugbuggy, Sunday, 27 May 2012 08:55 (eleven years ago) link

I don't think anything's set in stone beyond Wiig taking a powder.

Mike Myers made the mistake of sticking around for that '94-'95 season (which was the impetus for the 'Is SNL Dead?' roasting the show got in the press as well as in the halls of NBC, depending on who you believe) after most of his contempraries had already left and then quietly splitting midseason. Lorne had much bigger fish to fry at that time than giving superstar castmembers a proper sendoff.

Lol, Sandler riding high on the box office smashes of Going Overboard and Billy Madison

i misremembered Old School as being before Ferrell left but nah it was after. i wonder how 'famous' Wiig really is, though, Bridesmaids was much of an ensemble thing than Wayne's World or any Eddie Murphy movie.

--niccimanewhore (some dude), Sunday, 27 May 2012 12:52 (eleven years ago) link

Jimmy Fallon's big sendoff sketch doing a Grease parody w/ Tina Fey was actually pretty funny (and lol that Fallon is one of the few people to have gotten that kind of sketch), so i was mildly disappointed that there was only the vaguest hint of comedy in the Wiig graduation thing

--niccimanewhore (some dude), Sunday, 27 May 2012 12:56 (eleven years ago) link

Eddie Murphy's wiki page is insane, his entire SNL tenure is covered in one paragraph under a "1980s acting career" section, while a "Singing career" is like 3 times as long

--niccimanewhore (some dude), Sunday, 27 May 2012 12:59 (eleven years ago) link

the send-off thing did feel a little weird since there's been a lot of rumor that a good portion of the old cast could split. Even if you want to make a distinction between starring in Bridesmaids or starring in Horrible Bosses or hosting the VMAs or whatever, the main cast has been there so long that picking one to farewell would still be pretty cold and political if others were leaving. However, Wiig is the only one who's definitely said they're leaving so there you go. Sudeikis was making weird annoyed faces but it's not the first time he's done that at the end of the show.

da croupier, Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:08 (eleven years ago) link

Samberg getting a ridiculous 100th Digital Short bit and a sequel to Lazy Sunday was probably more his speed than tears anyway

i kinda love sudeikis, will miss him way more than wiig

--niccimanewhore (some dude), Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:10 (eleven years ago) link

maybe he can stay till the end of the election and get his 21-hug salute then

da croupier, Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:13 (eleven years ago) link

That's the going theory, currently.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:17 (eleven years ago) link

i'm getting depressed thinking about Armisen doing his shitty Obama until 2017

--niccimanewhore (some dude), Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:19 (eleven years ago) link

how fucked is this show gonna be if wiig, sudeikis and sandberg all bounce?

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:22 (eleven years ago) link

i mean i like a lot of the other cast members besides those ones but man it would be just about the lowest star power SNL in a really long time

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:22 (eleven years ago) link

sandberg is the most interesting case to me because he's definitely at the point where he could graduate into being in movies full time but his identity is so tied to SNL and its resurgence in relevance post-lazy sunday that it would be pretty weird to think of the show without him.

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:24 (eleven years ago) link

wiig is definitely pretty famous imo... i more or less agree w/ whiney, even tho "bridesmaids" is def more an indication of her ability to drive a majorly successful film from its inception than it is her fame as an actress seeing as the real breakout star from that movie was melissa mccarthy.

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:25 (eleven years ago) link

Nah, Hader, Moynihan, and Killam all bring it pretty hard. I will admit that Lorne's really boxed himself in by not nurturing more female talent. Keep your eye on Kate McKinnon, though.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:25 (eleven years ago) link

it's kind of the SNL way for the biggest names to move on and then people you didn't think of as stars to come into their own, though -- not that i necessarily think Hader or Moynihan or Pedrad or Armisen or Thompson or Elliott is suddenly going to become any more popular than they were before, but stranger things have happened and i'm kind of happy to see most of them get a bigger piece of the post-Wiig pie

--niccimanewhore (some dude), Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:26 (eleven years ago) link

I also agree that it would've been wise for Lorne to have a new Digital Shorts dude on the backburner. That absence will be glaring.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:27 (eleven years ago) link

the Lonely Island dudes have so clearly been running on fumes imo -- ever since they dropped their 2nd album they've shied away from musical sketches and a lot of those have been straight up terrible or just sequels to earlier ones

--niccimanewhore (some dude), Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:28 (eleven years ago) link

"bridesmaids" is def more an indication of her ability to drive a majorly successful film from its inception than it is her fame as an actress

This is the point I've tried to make anytime someone has doubted whether Kristin Wiig is gonna make it post-SNL. She didn't just passively show up to someone else's party and get super lucky. She had a lot to do with the creation and success of Bridesmaids, and a combination of talent and having her hands on the reins should translate into a solid film career for her.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:32 (eleven years ago) link

Oh, for sure. It doesn't change the fact that the Digital Shorts have become a real staple of the show over the past five years. I mean, to younger generations, their absence may feel as glaring as Weekend Update's would to us.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 27 May 2012 13:35 (eleven years ago) link

Too true! I dont think anyone SNL fan thought Sandler would be some A-list actor when he left; let alone saw Rob Schneider having a career at all!

I do think in a post-Sudekis universe, Jay and Vanessa have the potential to really steal the spotlight, as they're probably two of the most preternaturally gifted "supporting players" in 20 years

taran killam is probably the most poised to become a sudeikis-type utility player of the guys. maybe stefon is big enough that hader will be the default 'star' though?

jay pharoah is just kinda sad imo. that jay-z impression, ugh.

--niccimanewhore (some dude), Sunday, 27 May 2012 14:18 (eleven years ago) link

Jay Pharaoh has gotten a little more comfortable onstage, but dude was just painful to watch for a while. He's pretty clearly not much of an ensemble performer, and he's just really limited in general. I mean, can you see him holding his own in any sketch where he isn't doing an impression or where he had to play an actual character rather than a caricature?

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 27 May 2012 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

being an impressionist limited to jay-z, will smith and denzel washington is not really a formula for sustained success

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 27 May 2012 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

Lol @ jordan's constant high hopes for tarran killem

Dude, you need to stop watching whatever alternative reality SNL you tune into where Jay Pharaoh is a megatalent and maybe catch up with the one in our reality. Taran Killam is gonna be the next big breakout star on the show. I would bet actual money on that one.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 27 May 2012 14:23 (eleven years ago) link

Unless Kate McKinnon eclipses him, but she has some catching up to do.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 27 May 2012 14:24 (eleven years ago) link

i don't know if killam is gonna be a breakout star or anything (he may be!) just saying that he's been used a lot and is pretty versatile so he'll prob be one of the main dudes next season if sudeikis and sandberg bolt

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 27 May 2012 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

the worst thing about jay pharoah is when he's not doing impressions, he ends up doing these bit parts where he wears a funny outfit and just stares at the audience expecting them to laugh as if he has that kind of tracy morgan quality he totally lacks

--niccimanewhore (some dude), Sunday, 27 May 2012 14:29 (eleven years ago) link

Killam is super talented and charismatic and he hasn't done the "featured player hangback" that happens so often. He got comfortable with the rest of the cast really quickly and just brought it like a full cast member (a la Moynihan before him). And it's paid off so far and, like Moynihan, I guarantee it's gonna continue to pay off in terms of a quick promotion to the main cast.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 27 May 2012 14:33 (eleven years ago) link

Exactly. Maybe if the writers put him in a sketch where he actually plays, like, a boyfriend or a brother or a coworker or someone with a realistic relationship with another human being, I could wind up with egg on my face. But something tells me he's probably much more comfortable doing what he's doing.
