how do i shot kontrol s4

the late great, Monday, 28 May 2012 05:59 (eleven years ago) link

looks like they're down to about $600 on the bay

the late great, Monday, 28 May 2012 06:01 (eleven years ago) link

I don't remember what it was about, but I remember reading that the s2 has some features the s4 lacks because it's newer? So unless you need the 4 decks....

dan selzer, Monday, 28 May 2012 06:16 (eleven years ago) link

I take that back.

dan selzer, Monday, 28 May 2012 06:17 (eleven years ago) link

hmm i was stuck on the s4 because i thought the s2 didn't have the audio out but now i see it has the same sound out as the s4? that makes a big difference. i have never really made use of four decks (mainly because it eats up way too much of my screen for my liking) but i have used a third deck from time to time, mainly to support a really fast transition out of a bridging track. but that is a level of complexity i'm only comfortable with when i'm doing "rehearsed" mixes for ilx or whatever.

but i've also read that the s2 doesn't have a dedicated filter knob which would probably make a big difference in my case because i love my reverb and lfo filters to death.

the late great, Monday, 28 May 2012 06:30 (eleven years ago) link

yea maybe I should use the high-pass filter but I don't know where it is in traktor. also, what's the essential effects for house and techno?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 28 May 2012 07:37 (eleven years ago) link

I should hope there aren't any, because if using effects is "essential" then chances are they're being used to cover up weak mixes or because the dj is just bored (lol, I definitely play with my filter while waiting to cue). There's a tendency to not use effect judiciously, and nothing is more annoying than the DJ who throws on the flanger or looper in between every track, or does long, unnecessary filter sweeps when you just want to hear the track, and not stand there waiting for the dj to be done with her high-pass filter solo. Effects in general should be more like a finishing touch, and not the main course. But that's just me.

Boy Georbison (EDB), Monday, 28 May 2012 09:23 (eleven years ago) link

And just use what sounds good, not because it's popular. Playing around with things and trial and error should sort this out for you.

Boy Georbison (EDB), Monday, 28 May 2012 09:26 (eleven years ago) link

if you notice any effects, then its too heavy handed

EDB otm about not overdoing fx. like he said, if you notice the fx it's probably too much.

that said, there are three i find sort of indispensable

- lfo filter, so that instead of doing a sweep with a hand on the filter knob i can just set it at 4 or 8 bars and then concentrate on timing the cut or fade

- a delay with the filter set high and the feedback set low to give a bit of a spatial effect to fade outs, or to use the "delay freeze" to add an echo to an abrupt cut to make it less abrupt, or to just give a track a little more presence

- pulse phaser or pulse flanger to tweak out tracks as they fade ... now mind you this is well suited to things like berghain techno and dj tool tech house or dubby drum loops but not really for anything organic sounding (even deep house)

the late great, Monday, 28 May 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

djing my first venue tonight, a spot in the u street area of dc. i think it's gonna be a primarily the same old homo crowd along with some good friends and whatnot, spent a lot of time trying to pull a collection of tracks to play that keep to my own syncopated dance-centric intentions, without being too alienating - meaning mostly bringing in a lot of vocal'd tracks and remixes of familiar stuff.

31 track/13 minute sampler i sent around of some of the stuff i'll be playing

The only advice I can give is: don't freak out if nobody's dancing at first. They just haven't had enough to drink.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 31 May 2012 19:38 (eleven years ago) link

thanks, alternating anticipation towards this between "SWEET, FINALLY!" and "WAIT WHAT AM I DOING!?"

Another good tip: Turn off (or lower) the lights.

FYI, I might not post on here outside of my mixes but I spend a good chunk of time on here just reading through the forum, downloading others mixes and checking out peoples opinions and posts.

Posting now and that is the main thing

Hello'

coal, Sunday, 10 June 2012 07:09 (eleven years ago) link

I apologize then, I will continue waiting patiently for each and every Kick In The Eye podcast that is so graciously given to me every month.

Yours truly,

Whiny cunt.

Hennesy Williams (EDB), Sunday, 10 June 2012 08:23 (eleven years ago) link

That said, please understand that for someone with virtually no presence on this board, to regularly post one's podcast (complete with logo, cover design, twitter name, and factual description) it's not impossible that it looks identical to (or rather, actually functions as) spam.

With enduring faith,

W. Cunt.

Hennesy Williams (EDB), Sunday, 10 June 2012 08:31 (eleven years ago) link

Why not just block it then if you have a problem using the Killfile. However, I too apologize, I didn't know what kind of a weak willed person I was dealing with, that would manage to construe a post on a message board as some form of aural and visceral rape.

I swear your honor I didn't force Mr.Cunt to listen to it!

electrobiscuit, Sunday, 10 June 2012 09:23 (eleven years ago) link

ok anyway so i threw together a quick set to

1) question the idea that you don't want to use effects and eq. i used a filter and/or a delay on almost all of the mixes.

2) push back on the idea that continental mid-00s microhouse doesn't have a place at the table with modern techno

3) try to mix with more energy and quicker cuts (see ben ufo lwe mix) and a faster flow through tracks (see actress boiler room)

4) bring it rough rugged and raw (see prisoneer mixes)
