I'm torn between my desire to hate on the Red Bull Music Academy and my desire to give them a thumbs up for giving away free FLACs.

If EDM is this decade's alternative rock, does that make Skrillex: Eddie Vedder?

My mate Sully was good enough to pop down and do a set for us on Saturday. I may be biased, but the guy needs his own Fabric cd - very cool blends of uk bass and us-style house, lots of cut-up mixes etc.

I know dungeon dubstep is backward looking and not very exciting to most but I'm determined to plumb the depths.

― Josiah Alan, Thursday, 14 June 2012 14:45 (eleven years ago) link
that's cool but also almost entirely based on what is known in my circle as 'the forbidden rhythm'

What kick on the 1 and 2 and snare on the 3 ?

is that the lambada rhythm?

This one? Sounds sort of like a clave, slower reggaeton kind of thing.

Swindle is probably referencing soca more than anything but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Speaking of latin rhythms and dubstep, so psyched for the new Mala album.

forbidden rhythm =
1 2 3 4x-x-xx-x-x-xx-x-
― they loooovin the crut (The Reverend), Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:51 (eleven years ago) link
super curious why it's forbidden
― the late great, Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:58 (eleven years ago) link
yup, especially the first half:
1 2 3 x-x-xx-x-
it's like the go-to unfunky clave for fake latin beats. sure it can be voiced well or disguised/extended but i try to stay away from it when possible.
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:58 (eleven years ago) link
aka 'the white man's rhythm'
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:59 (eleven years ago) link
is there a link to an mp3 where i can hear that rhythm? i am terrible at reading tab for beats.
― the late great, Thursday, 14 June 2012 16:05 (eleven years ago) link
It works well in that track.
― they loooovin the crut (The Reverend), Thursday, 14 June 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link
yeah agreed.
my mind is going blank for classic examples but i will post one when i think of it.

Those mala tracks sound great. I was wondering what he's been up to, so bring on the album.
― Hennesy Williams (EDB), Thursday, 14 June 2012 20:13 (eleven years ago) link
I guess I should listen to those Mala tracks now. I only had time to listen to one track before I left for work and I was intrigued by the forbidden rhythm, which now that I think of it, might be kind of similar to a montuno rhythm in how it switches from on- to off-beat?
― they loooovin the crut (The Reverend), Friday, 15 June 2012 01:38 (eleven years ago) link
ha ok, here is an audio example of the forbidden rhythm: www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=h3JFEfdK_Ls#t=145s

― they loooovin the crut (The Reverend), Friday, 15 June 2012 19:16 (eleven years ago) link
I think the difference is it being just one layer of polyrhythm in the Swindle versus being the sole point of rhythmic interest in the Billy Joel.
― they loooovin the crut (The Reverend), Friday, 15 June 2012 19:18 (eleven years ago) link
can't believe nobody's ever sampled the first minute of that billy joel track, never heard that part before
― the late great, Friday, 15 June 2012 19:20 (eleven years ago) link
oh, you're just talking about the hat rhythm at the beginning of the swindle track?
bum bum badabum bum?
― the late great, Friday, 15 June 2012 19:23 (eleven years ago) link
had the same thought
nah, the main handclap rhythm that comes in at :38 and then gets passed around to the bass > synths > everything
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 15 June 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link
heh that rhythm is quite overused in grime

Finding the sudden popularity of "EDM" sort of depressing, but not nearly as depressing as all the crappy articles popping up in my Facebook page. This doesn't feel like winning.

This might have a little crossover with the Interzone Bubblers thread, but the new LOL Boys Enter the Unknown mix for UTTU is pretty stunning: http://boomkat.com/cds/533842-lol-boys-enter-the-unknown
It's got a lot of stuff going on in the mix but what strikes me most is how it reminds me a lot of 92/93 hardcore.

Generally I prefer Slackk's slightly housier productions to his stiff, stop-start grime-influenced bits but Blue Sleet has grown on me a lot, I like the way it builds up.
