i know what it means technically

i guess i was just thinking about what a completely subjective concept it is -- like any adjective, i guess, but relative weakness/strength is measured in so many different ways that it's just an interesting concept to me, i guess

Nag anecdote: I used to post regularly on a well-known message board with a green background and somebody posted a list of requests that women involved in a social justice movement were making of men involved in the same movement, and one of them was "don't make us nag you" and of course the dudes on the green website went apeshit about "I never make my (woman in whatever relationship to poster) nag me, she just nags me! Nagging is something women chose to do!" So I posted an example of where someone could make someone nag someone (it is Dude's responsibility to take out the trash, and dude leaves the trash until the kitchen smells like a dump and there are flies everywhere, and Woman is like, "Hey, dude, can you take out the trash, please? It's overflowing and there's a raccoon blocking my way to the fridge." and the Dude is like "Don't nag me! God!" And this other guy that knew Jeff and I from the internet was like, "Ooooo, I guess Jeff is in trouble for not taking out the trash!"

I still hate that person to this day. The end.

carl agatha, Monday, 4 June 2012 15:34 (eleven years ago) link

xp yeah, wuss is a totally subjective concept.

Maybe it's like "lazy." I hate it when people call themselves "lazy" because decide to relax instead of work. I do that myself occasionally. It's like, wait. I am not lazy. I have multiple jobs and volunteer commitments and hobbies and if I have an hour of free time it is not lazy to sit on the couch and watch TV instead of being productive 24-7.

ME TOO

omg could not agree more

game of crones (La Lechera), Monday, 4 June 2012 15:39 (eleven years ago) link

Fucking Protestant work ethic has fucked us up. I had about an hour and 15 minutes before I had to be somewhere yesterday, and nothing that I could accomplish within that time, and was like "Maybe I should clean out this cabinet! Maybe I should start on this pile of mending! Maybe I should make up something to do that I don't really have to do at all!" Then I realized I was crazy and I read a book instead.

Hey, want to see an amazingly terrible website??? www.atlanticliquors.net

carl agatha, Monday, 4 June 2012 15:55 (eleven years ago) link

I feel like I should be doing more work, but not at the expense of watching tv. Priorities.

Jeff, Monday, 4 June 2012 16:00 (eleven years ago) link

OMG! that website!!!

!!!!! lololol

In one of my literary criticism classes we learned that the wussy came from the words "weak" and "pussy."

Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 4 June 2012 16:01 (eleven years ago) link

Besides the intro song, what I love most so far is that you can zoom in on the low-res images of bottles of liquor and beach goers.

Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 4 June 2012 16:03 (eleven years ago) link

I didn't know it had sound! I'm sorry! I should have guessed, though.

I also like how when you click a link there is a jump cut animation of cross hairs.

I was trying to get an idea of their beer selection bc my pops wanted to know what to get us and I'm not sure which breweries have distribution in DE. The website did not help.

carl agatha, Monday, 4 June 2012 16:13 (eleven years ago) link

It's sad bc it's a great liquor store but if I didn't already know that, I'd write them off as complete bozos based on their website. Ahhh Delaware. Clawing your way into the modern age, yet doing it all wrong.

carl agatha, Monday, 4 June 2012 16:16 (eleven years ago) link

Oh, I knew I'd seen crosshairs, but unfortunately they're not the cursor on the zoom feature on the beach pic.

You absolutely have to listen to the intro song. To the tune of Air Supply's "Every Woman in the World":

It's such a crazy world now
It can drag you down then you run out Jim Beam
So I drive through the night to the liquor store lights
I can't believe what I see/When I shop at those other places
There's no love around me

You're the greatest liquor store in the world to me
My adult fantasy

Ends with "(AtlanticLiquorsRoute1RehobothnexttoWal-Mart.)"

game of crones (La Lechera), Monday, 4 June 2012 16:30 (eleven years ago) link

1) is it still happening
2) if so, where
3) let me suggest 6pm somewhere on the red line

game of crones (La Lechera), Monday, 4 June 2012 16:30 (eleven years ago) link

Sheffield's? It can be a little bro-tastic, but it is big and they have good beer and it's a block north of the Belmont stop, which is convenient for Red and Brown Liners alike.

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Monday, 4 June 2012 16:46 (eleven years ago) link

I am willing to accept the first available answer to that question, so there you have it. Sheffield's. Is this the place we all met a long time ago to eat appetizers? That suddenly seems like a very long time ago.

game of crones (La Lechera), Monday, 4 June 2012 16:51 (eleven years ago) link

Sheffield's is on Sheffield, 1 block north of Belmont http://goo.gl/maps/J0HD

Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 4 June 2012 16:57 (eleven years ago) link

Sheffield's also has a big beer garden iirc.

carl agatha, Monday, 4 June 2012 17:02 (eleven years ago) link

Looks like they have plenty of food too. Good!

game of crones (La Lechera), Monday, 4 June 2012 17:05 (eleven years ago) link

The food is great. Some of the best BBQ I've had outside of NC, including decent Eastern Carolina sauce.

Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 4 June 2012 17:11 (eleven years ago) link

Oh hai, just checking in, here. That area near the Belmont stop is one of the few I'm fairly familiar withso that works for me. I have a little bit of a cold but anticipate feeling a-ok by tomorrow pm.

In an airport, Chicago-bound by way of Toronto.

re: being productive/work ethic/etc.

sometimes someone is sick/headachy/unwell or whatev and can't get something done that they intended, and they'll say they're "useless". and i take umbrage to that. rather a lot.

so i've actually said, if you think you're useless for not completing some simple task, i can't imagine what you think of me. because health probs prevent me from doing things sometimes, you see. so i find this insulting.

and i've been argued with about this. not by someone saying i'm useless (thankfully, i suppose). but insisting that THEY are useless because they *should* be able to do wtfe, and arrrgh.

or, jenny otm "Fucking Protestant work ethic has fucked us up."

ha meanwhile i'm sitting around the house feeling guilty because my headache went away and i didn't go in to work the afternoon. why am i feeling guilty for taking a full sick day on a day when i was sick, and i never use sick days?

game of crones (La Lechera), Monday, 4 June 2012 17:56 (eleven years ago) link

fuck guilt. enjoy feeling better and a lovely day!

JuliaA, Monday, 4 June 2012 18:16 (eleven years ago) link

Excellent advice all around. And Julia, you make a really good point re: "useless." Something to keep in mind. (It's sort of in the same realm as when people who are thinner than I am talk about how fat they are (and it's never just fat, it's always "I ate so much I feel so gross and fat" or "I'm so fat it's awful" as opposed to, like, "I'm feeling fat today and DAMN do I love it!") and I'm like, "What's up, I'll just sit here and be so damn fatter as hell than you, nbd."

carl agatha, Monday, 4 June 2012 18:35 (eleven years ago) link

I spent more than half of my life feeling useless because for some reason, I just couldn't do things the way everyone else did. I couldn't sit still, I couldn't pay attention, I couldn't complete tasks -- you know, the way adults do. All of them but me, it seemed. The day I found out that my brain actually works differently from most people and was handed a bottle of pills was the day I stopped feeling useless.

I do not care for food jewelry.

carl agatha, Monday, 4 June 2012 21:38 (eleven years ago) link

i would not wear that food jewelry either, just thought it was funny

game of crones (La Lechera), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:43 (eleven years ago) link

whoa, CTA is closing the entire south branch of the Red line for track repairs in spring 2013? bet the comments section on that trib article is a great, wholesome, feel-good read.

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

wait, what? is that plan even for real?

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

it is, i see. wow.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:48 (eleven years ago) link

allegedly they'll be able to get it done in 5 months vs. 3 years if they only closed it down on weekends

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:49 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, but you know they would never do that on the North side. Fuck this city sometimes, tbrr.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:51 (eleven years ago) link

I just mean the CTA might try to say they are going to close the North branch of the red line for 5 months, but the right people with the right money and connections would pitch a holy fit and the plan would be scrapped immediately.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 4 June 2012 21:57 (eleven years ago) link

Re: comments, one person talks about how this will keep all the criminals away from the Northside beaches (SIGH) and in response, someone posted "keep your snooty mouth shut," which is OTM.

It sucks that they are going to do this, but the Red Line is a right mess and definitely needs the work. If the CTA actually makes the shuttle buses viable and adds additional service to other lines to compensate, it might MIGHT maybe be okay.

They are shutting down northside Red Line stations one at a time, iirc, like how they did with the brown line. But those are station remodels, not slow zone track work. How did they handle it when the did the Blue Line track work a few years ago?

carl agatha, Monday, 4 June 2012 22:03 (eleven years ago) link

If the CTA actually makes the shuttle buses viable and adds additional service to other lines to compensate, it might MIGHT maybe be okay.

See, this is where my cynicism wrt to the CTA kicks in and tells me this is a very key piece that will absolutely not happen in a fashion that is helpful in the least.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 4 June 2012 22:05 (eleven years ago) link

The Blue line work was not quite as extensive, I don't think, and done on weekends and nights.

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Monday, 4 June 2012 23:12 (eleven years ago) link

Bet the Sox aren't happy with this plan, being that its going to be five months of spring and summer.

Also, if this actually gets completed in five months as scheduled, I will eat my hat.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 00:51 (eleven years ago) link

What type of hat do you own?

Jeff, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 00:56 (eleven years ago) link

Mostly baseball caps. A fedora type as well somewhere.
