Townsend: "I think he should score"
It was well-crafted, just fell to completely the wrong guy

We've got Ian Darke and Steve McManaman doing the commentary. I treat it as ambient sound with somewhat piercing tones.
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 June 2012 16:16 (eleven years ago) link
Getting going a bit now - two attempts from France and a bad miss from Milner after some good play. We'll get a highlight reel out of this yet.

England have played more football in 15 mins here than in the previous 180 mins under Roy.

I'm holding out for at least 6 more mentions of "great feet"

this ITV commentary is so Alan Partridge; "i've liked this man since i first saw him.. good strength.. good body.. looks good in the shirt.. "

this is p exciting compared to a lot of Euro/World Cup England-opening-games i've seen in the last 15 years.

Was just thinking how tyldsley reminds me of Partridge. Total lack of self awareness plus that forced nasal tone.

With benzema playing so deep france may as well play him behind giroud instead of as a lone CF
― pandemic, Monday, 11 June 2012 16:26 (eleven years ago) link
Why do England play like completing passes isn't important?
― Popture, Monday, 11 June 2012 16:26 (eleven years ago) link
At this train pace I should be home for 7. Think i'll miss anything?
― Merdeyeux, Monday, 11 June 2012 16:26 (eleven years ago) link
relatively speaking this is a passing masterclass from englandxp
― pandemic, Monday, 11 June 2012 16:27 (eleven years ago) link
England look decent getting it forward, France look like they're running out of ideas a little. Wouldn't like to call this right now.

tbh this reminds me most of England beating Germany at Euro 2004

2000
England already doing better than the Dutch there.
― StanM, Monday, 11 June 2012 16:34 (eleven years ago) link
Tyldsley not so much tempting fate as standing naked on a mountain, covered in warpaint, challenging the cosmos to deny an England win.

england's keeper is a ponce
― J0rdan S., Monday, 11 June 2012 16:40 (eleven years ago) link
that was a good goal tho, on the header
He is a ponce though - very dodgy half from the best keeper in the world

England midfielders passing the ball to each other seems to have stopped completely since their goal.

They don't really xp - it's just something I've noticed creeping into the media the last couple of months, like Buffon, Casillas et al just suddenly stopped existing
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 11 June 2012 16:47 (eleven years ago) link
oh lol, okay -- sorry

whatever happened to robert green anyway?
― Steve Youngblood (dan m), Monday, 11 June 2012 16:50 (eleven years ago) link
that was...ok from England. pleased for Joleon. Hart is a wanker. think part of the problem is that with Gerrard and Parker screening the back 4, one of them needs to take the ball forward and link the forwards more. but i'm actually kind of impressed that Gerrard's had the discipline to play deeper.
technical shortcomings of the players as a whole v. much in evidence. France aren't all that. neither of these wd compete with the better teams in the tournament i don't think.
