Mac Pro proc bump also confirmed by the verge.

I kinda want that new MBP. Lusting commences.

I am glad that the macbook pro is pricier, as I am doing a lot of other sorts of expenditures and am trying not to spend all kinds of cash right now. I will resist the purchase, this way.

Seriously, thin as hell, a pound lighter than the previous one... golly

Hmm, no MacMini refresh (yet) and iOS6 runs on 3GS? I may be spending far less money this year than I thought.

circa1916, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:45 (eleven years ago) link

what's the deal with the new airport?

the late great, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

also why can you not add a bigger ssd to the cheaper macbook pro, that sounds like BS

the late great, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:49 (eleven years ago) link

did the previous airport express not have dual-band? I think just the extreme did.

mh, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:58 (eleven years ago) link

Just bought the highest-end 15" without the retina display. My old first-gen MacBook (32-bit) is horrible at this point.

schwantz, Monday, 11 June 2012 20:22 (eleven years ago) link

The Retina would be nice with a monitor to replace my iMac - but I'm not that excited by 256MB of onboard storage. Would have to run TBolt drives all the time at home for iTunes and my Lightroom archive, then not have them when I'm not at home.

I guess this could push me to go all-cloud with Spotify/Pandora but that option does not excite me.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 11 June 2012 20:27 (eleven years ago) link

I still feel all ;_; that my old mac pro that I bought used just over a year ago (and pimped out) will not get snow leopard

I can play Diablo 3 on it, Apple, please take that as a sign it is worth supporting

mh, Monday, 11 June 2012 20:41 (eleven years ago) link

feel like the jump from MBP display -> MBP retina display will feel like jump from ipad 2 -> ipad 3, i.e. not all that stunning

un® (dayo), Monday, 11 June 2012 22:53 (eleven years ago) link

YOU'RE not all that stunning

brony ver (s1ocki), Monday, 11 June 2012 22:59 (eleven years ago) link

Was having some last-minute angst about the lack of a matte screen option on the MBP Retina, but then I realized whenever I used my GF's new MBA the glossy didn't bother me too much.

Pulled trigger on maxed-out MBP Retina. At least I can take in the screen while I eat ramen for the next year to pay for this thing.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 11 June 2012 22:59 (eleven years ago) link

whoa

brony ver (s1ocki), Monday, 11 June 2012 23:00 (eleven years ago) link

dont forget applecare

un® (dayo), Monday, 11 June 2012 23:15 (eleven years ago) link

iPad 2 > 3 jump is pretty stunning for me. Text is infinitely improved. Not sure that's a big deal on a MBP screen tho.
Most photos online being 1024 on the long side @ 72dpi limits Retina usefulness, IMO.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 11 June 2012 23:15 (eleven years ago) link

I'm sure stet can cook up a retina.css stylesheet for ILX

un® (dayo), Monday, 11 June 2012 23:22 (eleven years ago) link

ipad 2 -> 3 jump is day and night ffs

$3750?

the late great, Monday, 11 June 2012 23:39 (eleven years ago) link

At least I can take in the screen play crysis at 40 fps while I eat ramen for the next year to pay for this thing.

the late great, Monday, 11 June 2012 23:40 (eleven years ago) link

$3750?

Nope. As a member of a printing industry consortium, I get a discount direct from the source (so to speak).

OH COME ON. The retina-optimized Diablo 3 please!

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:00 (eleven years ago) link

dont forget applecare

I never do.

If anything, since I make my living as a developer I can take the business expense write-off.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:01 (eleven years ago) link

You don't need "retina optimized" you sillies, it just runs in Hi-DPI mode in Safari and in Diablo 3 it'd run at full resolution instead of half

mh, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:07 (eleven years ago) link

If it's as good as the Display PostScript resolution on my old old old NeXT slab I'll be happy.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:11 (eleven years ago) link

my education pricing only knocks off like $200 ... still 2k doesn't seem that bad for a retina 15"

srsly though why is the 512gb ssd not an option for the 2.3 ghz machine?!? slower processor takes up more room? idgi.

the late great, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:33 (eleven years ago) link

You can run the screen in Hi-DPI retina mode (effectively low-res) or there are various super hi-res modes available in settings.

Gotta think that native pixels will be more or less unreadable, though.

stet, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:35 (eleven years ago) link

You could be like my crazy coworker and just sit with your face four inches from the screen

mh, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:45 (eleven years ago) link

I was more referring to the fact that default ilx stylesheet limits pictures to 800 pix of wide or something like that

un® (dayo), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:51 (eleven years ago) link

it was a joek

ipad 2 -> 3 jump is day and night ffs

― Autumn Almanac, Monday, June 11, 2012 7:32 PM (Yesterday)

hasn't been a huge change for me, then again I'm working in email/pages/safari and not heavily in graphics

had to use an ipad 2 recently and didn't notice a difference - it wasn't instantly like GOD look at this crappy display, tho if I laid them side-by-side I'd prolly see something

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 19:58 (eleven years ago) link

saw the iOS 6 maps app in person, it's pretty f'n insane. the 16 year old who showed it to me was complaining about "lag", i wanted to tell him about when i was his age and it took 3ds max roughly 10 minutes to render a sphere with a reflection.

the late great, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:00 (eleven years ago) link

so i took my mbp in AGAIN, it keeps doing that thing where it won't turn on. the apple genius could not figure it out and for the third time took it in to check it out. hoping i end up with a new one.

brony ver (s1ocki), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 21:19 (eleven years ago) link

can't believe they accidentally replaced s1ockis mbp with a retina mbp :>

un® (dayo), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 22:28 (eleven years ago) link

guess someone needs to get their retina checked amirite

the late great, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 22:51 (eleven years ago) link

i have no illusions they'll give me a ret haha

brony ver (s1ocki), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

"a ret" is the new "purple lanyard"

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 23:01 (eleven years ago) link

you're getting the clam.

jed_, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 23:09 (eleven years ago) link

purple lanyard?

the late great, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 23:10 (eleven years ago) link

CLAM!

mh, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 02:45 (eleven years ago) link

so i think the mbp retina is more money than i'm willing to spend on a new computer, but i do need to get a new laptop this year. my current one is slow as hell and on its last legs i think (applecare hasn't quite run out yet... but imminently). does diablo 3 + civ 5 (my two PC gaming lusts) run okay on the 13" air? and is there any reason i wouldn't be more than happy with one? (and is there any reason to wait until my current laptop completely dies before upgrading?)

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 03:19 (eleven years ago) link

well, the reason is that you get the most out of the money you spent on the old laptop? and if you can make it until the next upgrade you will get a better computer for the same price? i think the first reason is compelling, the second i guess is more or less always true.

after researching the new rmbp - and getting pissed about the lack of upgradability and greedy pricing scheme and also concerned that it doesn't have enough cpu/gpu to handle graphic intensive apps at the higher display resolution - i am going to try to eke another year out of this beat-up santa rosa w/ its busted ODD, cracked bezel, scratched monitor, noisy fan, almost-full HDD and missing keys.

the late great, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 03:29 (eleven years ago) link

Wait isn't AppleCare 2 years past the original purchase date at most? I guess a plain old MacBook or whatever won't play D3, buuuut....

mh, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 03:32 (eleven years ago) link

3 years i think? 1 year warranty plus 2 more years from the applecare?

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 03:33 (eleven years ago) link
