3 static Russian forwards in the box then, waste

Mexès Coleslaw Massacre (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:33 (eleven years ago) link

He's on the verge of dry-heave here. Oyy.

William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:34 (eleven years ago) link

Terrific game

Poland showing up the real measure of England's performance y/day

Mexès Coleslaw Massacre (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:37 (eleven years ago) link

That was an absolute belter.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:37 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, very entertaining game

Love Max Ophüls of us all (Michael White), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:37 (eleven years ago) link

Pleased at that result. Means Russia will have to make an effort against Greece.

Poland/Czechs cd be a total stormer

Mexès Coleslaw Massacre (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:38 (eleven years ago) link

as with almost all this tournament so far I only caught about half of that but it was great, stoked if they both end up going through

geezargh butlargh (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:38 (eleven years ago) link

they are certainly the best two teams in the group

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

I hope they both do go through, though I'm not too confident of Poland actually winning a game after the first debacle.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link

Echoing all that about it being a great game. Everything felt much more sparked up than before.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:41 (eleven years ago) link

Holland-Germany tomorrow

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:43 (eleven years ago) link

didn't think it was that good cuz russia didn't really funtion properly, zhirkov was contained by piszcczek/kuba and without him and to a lesser extent anyukov widening the defence arshavin and dzagoev had less space

kerzhakov is a clever player but he doesn't really have great acceleration or skill

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:43 (eleven years ago) link

ffs Chiles

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:43 (eleven years ago) link

russia are playing chic early 00s formation 'the xmas tree formation'

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:44 (eleven years ago) link

Agree want them both through (the one thing that could've made that better would've been if it'd been a knock-out stages tie, cos then the ending would've been menk), but at the same time I would find it sort of funny if Greece did Russia. Particularly if Samaras scored.

William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:45 (eleven years ago) link

Thinking things could get kinda nasty if Russia win this tournament.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 21:27 (eleven years ago) link

nasty is relative compared to the golden age of Soviet oppression, obv

Mexès Coleslaw Massacre (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 21:33 (eleven years ago) link

The final's in Ukraine at least, I don't think Russia's hated there even in the west. The team is highly likeable too, I feel that should make a difference.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 21:37 (eleven years ago) link

lol klassic klata

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 21:38 (eleven years ago) link

has dzagoev done anything arshavin-the-meme-esque yet to garner a thread before he is named player of the tournament and goes to real or psg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acromegaly

The glinting eyes of the hereditary syphilitic (also syphilitic in his own right), the illiterate day-laborer’s jaws, the rachitic acromegalic face already filled the pages of Italia Illustrata

as carlo gadda described alberto aquilani's favourite train timetable reformer

Did the paperbag guy donate his unwanted cuttings to the man on that acromegaly page?

Noticing that in commentaries on matches involving Greece, the usual Greek mythological references trotted out by commentators are in danger of being superseded by Euro crisis ones

Tom D (Tom D.), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 13:08 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe they are just giving you a minor tour of the greece's economic labyrinth?

Zaireeka Badu (NickB), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 13:12 (eleven years ago) link

twp seems notably less hateful these days, almost subdued, compared to terry he might as well be raoul wallenberg

i suppose you could cast aspersions on his open infelidities with whores, but then the unconscious implication that his bling-draped wife is no different is bitterly amusing

it's hardly his fault english hacks build him up as something beyond his actual talents

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 13:14 (eleven years ago) link

it's hardly his fault english hacks build him up as something beyond his actual talents

This applies to the entire England squad tho

Tom D (Tom D.), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 13:16 (eleven years ago) link

yeah but twp seems notably less hubristic about it than the others

even when he had to be shoved out wide to accomodate ronaldo, he seemed to realize that that was a fair reflection on their relative talents

he doesn't seem as deluded as the rest of the golden generation, i don't remember him saying anything nearly as risible as gerrard claiming joe cole is better than messi

Wesley Sneijder has hit out at the "pathetic egos" inside the Holland squad as they prepare to face Germany on Wednesday night. The Dutch lost their opening game against Denmark and desperately need a result against one of the pre-tournament favourites if they are not to face an early exit.

But, as has happened so often in the past with the Dutch team, their preparations for an important game has been disrupted by disharmony in the squad and Sneijder has now voiced his displeasure with the situation. "It is time we let go of these pathetic egos," he said. "If somebody is creating a mess [within the squad], I will stand up against them.

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 13:54 (eleven years ago) link

thankfully wes 'give me £250k a week and a private plane' sneijder is there to sort out all of the egos

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 13:55 (eleven years ago) link

So the usually best informed journalists think Holland will play Kuyt instead of Afellay and see Matthijsen return at the back. The latter is obvious, but Kuyt... The logic would be that he can stop off Lahm better than Afellay. Which is true, but we also lose any creativity we had on the right wing. And no Huntelaar... Ffs.

i guess it's a case of "can't afford to lose, can maybe afford to draw"
