so i think the mbp retina is more money than i'm willing to spend on a new computer, but i do need to get a new laptop this year. my current one is slow as hell and on its last legs i think (applecare hasn't quite run out yet... but imminently). does diablo 3 + civ 5 (my two PC gaming lusts) run okay on the 13" air? and is there any reason i wouldn't be more than happy with one? (and is there any reason to wait until my current laptop completely dies before upgrading?)

well, the reason is that you get the most out of the money you spent on the old laptop? and if you can make it until the next upgrade you will get a better computer for the same price? i think the first reason is compelling, the second i guess is more or less always true.

after researching the new rmbp - and getting pissed about the lack of upgradability and greedy pricing scheme and also concerned that it doesn't have enough cpu/gpu to handle graphic intensive apps at the higher display resolution - i am going to try to eke another year out of this beat-up santa rosa w/ its busted ODD, cracked bezel, scratched monitor, noisy fan, almost-full HDD and missing keys.

Wait isn't AppleCare 2 years past the original purchase date at most? I guess a plain old MacBook or whatever won't play D3, buuuut....

3 years i think? 1 year warranty plus 2 more years from the applecare?

(playing D3 on an upgraded Mac pro from 2006 that is probably a 2008 proc-wise, 2010 gpu-wise)

Odd that the Apple UK website, which mostly clones the US site appearance, takes care to differentiate for the British market in some places but not in others. The new Macbook Pro for example gives the size in centimetres rather than inches and avoids American spellings, but the iOS 6 page, which shows off Siri's new ability to fetch sports scores, has the White Sox playing the Angels and notes "Siri knows baseball, basketball, football, soccer, and hockey." Got that? Not only football, but soccer too!

isn't there usually a lag of a few weeks after a new product announcement before it appears in stores? If they had to ship out the boxes and stock the stores so the new products would be there the day after the unveiling, there's no way Apple could prevent someone in the shipping chain leaking the details in advance, which Apple in known not to like.

asked in Oxford Street today; they should have them on display by the end of the week, but it's going to be a few weeks until they're on sale

I think they only people I know who ever owned one did video, and they switched to 15" a while ago

i knew a pro photojournalist who lugged one around in a foam suitcase with his lenses and camera body to be able to do aperture-on-the-go and he was always complaining about it, he basically said anything he did "in the field" would have been fine on a 13" and anything that wasn't he preferred to view at home on a big display

i can't find the data i was looking at but i understand the percentage of mbp sales that were 17" were tiny

Why are 17" screens still popular on Windows laptops but not Macs?

ime windows people are more hardware-geeky and value minded than mac people
