Retina display would be excellent for photo editing, imo.

Why are 17" screens still popular on Windows laptops but not Macs?

Lee626, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

ime windows people are more hardware-geeky and value minded than mac people

it's kinda like the question of why rainbow backlit keyboards are more popular on alienware computers than others

the late great, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:16 (eleven years ago) link

ime the 17" windows laptops are usually shit resolution

mh, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:26 (eleven years ago) link

can i get a rainbow backlit keyboard for my dell?

Impetuous hybrid (Matt P), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:48 (eleven years ago) link

My Lenovo Thinkpad (14") doesn't have a backlit keyboard, but it does have a single white LED light that shines down like a floodlight from the top of the screen. Not as good, but it beats darkness. And I do use my laptop in the dark....

ifixit teardown in, ram is not user upgradeable, HD is a big 'maybe'

un® (dayo), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:18 (eleven years ago) link

I mean, I guess it's not a big deal, the idea of a computer with parts you can replace yourself is probably dying out. but a retina mbp should cost a minimum of $2200 + $200 for RAM upgrade + $300 for applecare

un® (dayo), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:35 (eleven years ago) link

how much would user-replaceable ram have cost

brony ver (s1ocki), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:38 (eleven years ago) link

but a retina mbp should cost a minimum of $2200 + $200 for RAM upgrade

Just as a data point, on my MBP Retina order adding an additional 8GB RAM was $180.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:40 (eleven years ago) link

you got the discount double check didn't you? I checked through the normal store and it was $200. probably $180 for education people.

un® (dayo), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:40 (eleven years ago) link

they're called educators.

8 GB of RAM turned my four year old mbp into a brand new machine

un® (dayo), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:41 (eleven years ago) link

correction s1ocki, the proper term is pedant

the late great, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 23:47 (eleven years ago) link

pedantgogy.

As a former Mac-repair guy I suppose I should feel miffed about all the non-user replaceable parts in the MBP Retina, but to be fair - since I paid the extra $ for AppleCare, I just gave it to Apple if there were any hardware issues. AppleCare is worth it: my current MBP (five years old now and VERY well-travelled) has a new motherboard, new keyboard lights, new battery, and new power adapter - all of which was covered. The only out-of-warranty issue I had to pay out of pocket for was a dead battery early this year. The only non-Apple work I did was replace the HD with a 750GB model and that's it.

Until SSD drives reach a capacity of 2TB while simultaneously dropping below $500 in price for same, I'm pretty sure the specs on what I ordered will be sufficient for me over the next 4 to 5 years. I don't understand the whining of the hordes on either side - but I'm also breaking my rule about not reading any tech blogs.

new apple de-lust objects

brony ver (s1ocki), Thursday, 14 June 2012 00:09 (eleven years ago) link

i'm not sure what whining you're hearing elvis but the two things i'm hearing are

-- not being able to upgrade the hard disk above 256 gb w/o also upgrading the cpu is silly.

-- not being able to run the retina display at more than 20 or 30 fps because of the choice of gpu is also silly.

i think those criticisms are valid!

the late great, Thursday, 14 June 2012 00:13 (eleven years ago) link

all those good parents, correcting their sons' evil sexual orientation with expensive toys

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 14 June 2012 00:19 (eleven years ago) link

I assume (s)he knows apple is run by a man with his/her son's approximate degree of homosexness

i'm not sure what whining you're hearing elvis but the two things i'm hearing are

The main contention points I was reading were the usual ones leftover from the MacBook Air. Non-socketed RAM, inability to replace HD.

-- not being able to upgrade the hard disk above 256 gb w/o also upgrading the cpu is silly.

The CPU is not replaceable on the current MBPs. Not sure why this is a contention point now.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 14 June 2012 00:28 (eleven years ago) link

Also, I'm not a gamer so FPS times are kinda lost on me. I spent most of my time in Xcode, Coda, and Logic these days.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 14 June 2012 00:35 (eleven years ago) link

do people really upgrade laptop CPUs? I find this harder to believe than ... that CL post.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 14 June 2012 00:40 (eleven years ago) link

not so many pc gamers on macbooks anyway. it's for sure a compromise re the range of stuff you can play. but some of the bigger games (like blizzard stuff) come out on both so if you really love mac, you can get some of your fix on it.

Mordy, Thursday, 14 June 2012 01:05 (eleven years ago) link

i'm sorry that was unclear elvis

what i was saying was that the 2.3 ghz rmbp is only available w a 256 gb SSD. if you elect to buy a 2.3 ghz rmbp you are stuck w a 256 gb ssd

if you want the 512 gb ssd (which i do) then you also have to also pay extra for the 2.6 ghz model (which i don't need), which then gives you the option (in the apple store) to upgrade the SSD as well

i agree w you about fps for the most part as i am not a big gamer. i mainly do indesign and illustrator and several different music things and a wee bit of video and photo things.

it just strikes me as odd that they'd underpower the gpu like that

the late great, Thursday, 14 June 2012 02:24 (eleven years ago) link

I suspect Apple is simply catering to the buying patterns of their customers. It's been awhile since I really got into the sales numbers, but I'll bet there's a big group of people who just want the shiny at the lowest price possible (but not too low) and another big group of people who just want whatever the most expensive thing is.

Based on all the whining about the end of the 17" MBP, you would think that it's sales were good but they weren't - under 2% of all of Apple's laptop sales. I have a feeling that BTO sales aren't that much higher. Would love to know...

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 14 June 2012 02:57 (eleven years ago) link

gaming performance tradeoffs discussed in the Verge's review.

I don't know a ton about graphics cards but I assume sticking a GPU in there that could run brand-new games at the full resolution *and* 60fps would not meet Apple's power consumption, noise, and form factor goals.

"Holy crap," I mutter, as he gently taps my area (silby), Thursday, 14 June 2012 03:00 (eleven years ago) link

i think that's probably accurate re: cheapskates vs spendies but i still think its offensive i can't get a bigger ssd w/o also shelling out for the cpu.

it's nonsensical but i guess that's how the car market works too (gotta get leather if you want the moonroof and six disc changer)

what's a bto?

the late great, Thursday, 14 June 2012 03:03 (eleven years ago) link

markers, Thursday, 14 June 2012 03:06 (eleven years ago) link

silby you're obviously otm here but in that case i'd figure apple would wait a bit before implementing the retina display and form factor at the same time

i dunno i guess i'm still living in an imaginary world where apple is trying to make the best product possible as opposed to billions of dollars

the late great, Thursday, 14 June 2012 03:06 (eleven years ago) link

i have nothing but contempt for people who walk into the apple store and back out w a computer like its buying a latte at starbucks

give me bto or give me death!!

the late great, Thursday, 14 June 2012 03:09 (eleven years ago) link

hahaha

markers, Thursday, 14 June 2012 03:10 (eleven years ago) link

laptop GPUs are almost always going to be a compromise? fanboys have attacked the apple GPU for being underpowered vis-a-vis a windows gaming laptop... but those windows gaming laptops don't get 7 hours.

but hey, two thundrbolt ports! I'm sure some company will make an external absurdly powerful vid card for the RMBP if the demand really exists.

un® (dayo), Thursday, 14 June 2012 09:05 (eleven years ago) link

"gaming laptops" usually are more a clusterfuck than a compromise imo

mh, Thursday, 14 June 2012 13:38 (eleven years ago) link

i hear that those alienware laptops are nice for gaming

Mordy, Thursday, 14 June 2012 14:05 (eleven years ago) link

mh, Thursday, 14 June 2012 14:05 (eleven years ago) link

Mordy, Thursday, 14 June 2012 14:07 (eleven years ago) link

ok ok you've convinced me the gpu thing is a canard.

the late great, Thursday, 14 June 2012 14:42 (eleven years ago) link
