I was having conflicting thoughts while watching the singing. But that was more because it encouraged Drury's bullshit to ease the pain of making up the numbers etc. And you know that Spain are in the same fucking boat re: economy right?

whats so bad about the irish fans? i dont think theres anything horrible about them

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 14 June 2012 21:55 (eleven years ago) link

i think keane is arguing they aren't horrible enough

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 21:58 (eleven years ago) link

They were great, but tbh it's not much of an achievement really. You'd rather have no fans but be able to close down around the box.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 14 June 2012 21:59 (eleven years ago) link

i would be happy if they fucked over this crappy italy team (pirlo and buffon excepted)

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:02 (eleven years ago) link

i will obviously be watching HRVATKA tho

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:04 (eleven years ago) link

/hrvatska

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:05 (eleven years ago) link

i dont know how you expect fan to react though. theyre a sad cunt if they cry about it and theyre a feeb if they act like its only a game.

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:14 (eleven years ago) link

i am not a happy drunk

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:14 (eleven years ago) link

― Michael B Higgins (Michael B)

i find international football fans - the face-painting, wig-wearing, "just here for a laugh" mob - fairly cringeworthy, and ireland are pretty much the apotheosis of that. oh here's a drunk guy dressed up as a leprechaun who hasn't been to a football game since the last time he went to old trafford, what a guy. bleh.

(n.b. i know im a hateful individual).

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:18 (eleven years ago) link

a broad generalisation. a lot of irish fans get the boat over for matches in england.

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:20 (eleven years ago) link

oh huge generalisation, assumptions, prejudices etc. don't even get me started on the tartan army!

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:23 (eleven years ago) link

there is that element of Irish fandom, but there's also a big core of people who've gone to many many shit games and still turn up. It's unfair to tar them all with the same brush

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:23 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i don't fully share keane's predictable hatred here

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:25 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i know that, and to be honest in the greater scheme of things even my strawman irish supporter is hardly doing anything particularly wrong.

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:25 (eleven years ago) link

or even "wrong" at all.

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:25 (eleven years ago) link

football fans in general are idiots but rather the irish fans doing drunken singsongs with the spanish than a load of polish & russian reets kicking each others heads in

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:26 (eleven years ago) link

the latter is more interesting to watch imo, ha. nihilist jim.

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:26 (eleven years ago) link

xp keanes just butthurt after saipan...would have happened whether mcccarthy was there or not tbh...remember when he said he'd never be a pundit?

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:27 (eleven years ago) link

tell you what though lads, we may be out but we'll have a drink and a sing song at the next game and show everyone we're the best fans in the world...YOU'LL NEVER BEAT THE IRISH (repeat to fade)

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:29 (eleven years ago) link

ha yeah i had forgotten that xp

he is just too deranged to be a manager

recent teams who most desparately needed a tv crew in their midst = 2009 era sunderland with keane kicking over tactics boards, dioufy threatening to stab anton ferdinand, millions of random irish dudes hanging around to no purpose

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

Keane's not hating on the fans, he's hating on the bullshit "oh shure isn't it lovely to be here, never mind the sloppy passing and Paul Green in the side, shure maybe next time lads?" glossing over that inevitably goes on. (I haven't seen RTE's coverage yet but I imagine they'll be suitably brutal).

gyac, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

will ye have a big leprechaun hat

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:33 (eleven years ago) link

Roy Keane is a failed manager with a lot of grudges

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:35 (eleven years ago) link

a lot of grudges and no leprechaun hat

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:36 (eleven years ago) link

i'm wearing mine right now

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:37 (eleven years ago) link

He is, but he's right to say we should expect better...than Keith fucking Andrews and Paul fucking Green. He's 40 and of dubious fitness and he could probably still easily outclass our midfield.

gyac, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:38 (eleven years ago) link

i did find the shots of the irish and spanish fans together all singing with their arms round each other genuinely heartwarming.

Chris, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:38 (eleven years ago) link

what happened to james mcarthy? did he really have to miss the whole tournament

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:39 (eleven years ago) link

dad has cancer. Trap doesn't like him

Keane is a fucking remedial moron. If he hates Ireland so much he shouldn't have signed every horrendous Irish also ran ever as a boss. And slated pundits forever until him and his wife needed a new kebab at burgerland in cork with lee sharpe, great guy, #keanebiogreference

ooooiiiioooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaoooooh un - bi - leevable! (LocalGarda), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:45 (eleven years ago) link

he doesn't fucking hate Ireland, he thinks we shouldn't be happy to roll in, play like shit, and make up the numbers. fairly obvious point, and one that needs making.

gyac, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:46 (eleven years ago) link

doubt he needs the cash, just wants the attention

when he was at sunderland he would always be giving his rote 'like i said to be honest with you i've got no time for people who ______' opinions on every subject not pertaining to sunderland

but as gyac says, his core point here is otm

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:48 (eleven years ago) link

it's actually not a point that needs making though. Maybe ten years ago

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:49 (eleven years ago) link

not with the emergence of darraghmac, but keane still has a bigger audience

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:51 (eleven years ago) link

I like your proposed formation though nakh

swap hoolihan for mcgeady

Hoolihan is 30 tbf

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

theory being that mcgeady is ireland's most skilful player and might as well bring him into attacking mid

especially if his crossing is as iffy as regular ireland watchers attest

i just think ireland needs to get beyond game lads and gameladism

too cool graham rix listening to neu (nakhchivan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:55 (eleven years ago) link

Trap is there for two more years and showed little inclination to change a losing formula after Croatia. The whole setup looked so amateurish, it really embarrassed me. (Actually, amateurish is insulting as roughly 100% of hurling matches I've watched have displayed more skill, better fitness and backbone. Retracted.) It can't be stated enough. Keane was as right as he was after the waffling about how "lucky" we were to get a 2-2 draw against the Dutch in Amsterdam, when we were leading that game 2-0 for 70 minutes and squandered two points.

gyac, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

*in 2000, for WC 2002 qualifying.

gyac, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

definitely

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:57 (eleven years ago) link

oh yeah, there's no hope for the WC qualifiers whatsoever

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:57 (eleven years ago) link
