Feels strange to hear "Gebre Selassie" and not be watching the legendary Ethiopian runner sprint away from the field to win another Olympic gold.

when poland do work it wide they only have lewandowski in the box

pandemic, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:25 (eleven years ago) link

gebre selassie, pilar and hubschman are all good

pandemic, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:26 (eleven years ago) link

Kinda agree about blazing sunshine and stifling heat - they should look entirely unlike regular footy is the point. I was going to posit ungodly kickoff times too, but that was just Mexico 86 really.

Classic Greece

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

Damn, great goal. What amazing timing before the half!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

"russia and greece will go out of group a" according to commentator

Number None, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

by 'go out' he means 'not go out'

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:35 (eleven years ago) link

ungodly kick-off times hmm. I did love 6am kick offs at Japan/Korea 2002 I admit.

pandemic, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

he also said Poland would "go home"

And now Shearer's joined in.

"Do you think Bill Kenwright would give you permission to talk to Spurs?" I want them to work Clarence into this.

shearer makes it sound like avb shouldn't get another job cos the chelsea players didn't like him. Did the porto players hate him too?

Don't remember the kick-off times being particularly ungodly for Mexico 86? I'm pretty sure the Hand of God game was on a Sunday afternoon (UK time), and England v Paraguay early evening. I have vague memories of seeing Wilkins get sent off and Robson injured on a Friday night (?) in a dreadful game in the group stages. The 3-0 with Lineker's goals must have been late and on a school night because I didn't see that live.

"assaulted by polanski" hm

pandemic, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:50 (eleven years ago) link

kerzhakov has been pretty bad even disregarding his finishing

pandemic, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:50 (eleven years ago) link

i remember wilkins getting sent off on a friday as i was staying at my grans and she let me stay up .
Also remember being allowed to stay up on a schoolnight to see denmark beating scotland.

it looks like something rupert the bear would wear (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:53 (eleven years ago) link

greece's attacking players are worse even than ireland's

i remember when samaras joined citeh he described it as a stepping stone to one of europe's biggest clubs

(onimo mutters something about jock stein)

i'm watching it

poland offering nothing this half so far

pandemic, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

lol I was just laughing at that classic Samaras break there, nice touch, rides a tackle, overruns the ball, has to challenge to keep it, somehow still has it, strides forward past another man, gets excited, shoots ridiculously wide from 30 yards, fixes his hair, expressionless.

His whole career in 10 seconds

xxxp

"What a book!" Terry Bland (onimo), Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

The analysis of the Greek goal was hilarious:

"Good goal"
"Keeper should've saved it in my view"

I can only assume they couldn't see the start of the clip in the studio.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

xxxp - I am too, but it's not too much to write home about at present. Limbersky's looking bright, but no-one's really looking like scoring. It pretty much is what it is.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:59 (eleven years ago) link

poland czech game is shite. lewandowski should've scored first half. that's about it. czech maybe on the front foot now?

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:00 (eleven years ago) link

If Greece votes anti-Europe tomorrow, wouldn't the team have to leave this tournament too?

StanM, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:00 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, Poland look out of ideas

Number None, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:00 (eleven years ago) link

yes

xps I'm pretty sure Eng-Arg 1986 was on a Sunday evening, 'cos I have a vivid memory of my pals coming to the door with about fifteen minutes to go, wanting me to come out & play football. I couldn't believe it - "nothing's going to happen now" they said.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

they look scared now tbh xp

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

of limbarski for sure

pandemic, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:03 (eleven years ago) link

czech gonna score now i think

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:04 (eleven years ago) link

The many pronunciations of Dzagoev have been a highlight of this tournament. Grampa Mick just tried "Saguraff".
