And now Shearer's joined in.

"Do you think Bill Kenwright would give you permission to talk to Spurs?" I want them to work Clarence into this.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:43 (eleven years ago) link

clarence you've been to some good west end musical entertainments in your time haven't you clarence

dis civilization and its contents (nakhchivan), Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:45 (eleven years ago) link

shearer makes it sound like avb shouldn't get another job cos the chelsea players didn't like him. Did the porto players hate him too?

here comes Pav

Don't remember the kick-off times being particularly ungodly for Mexico 86? I'm pretty sure the Hand of God game was on a Sunday afternoon (UK time), and England v Paraguay early evening. I have vague memories of seeing Wilkins get sent off and Robson injured on a Friday night (?) in a dreadful game in the group stages. The 3-0 with Lineker's goals must have been late and on a school night because I didn't see that live.

"assaulted by polanski" hm

pandemic, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:50 (eleven years ago) link

kerzhakov has been pretty bad even disregarding his finishing

dis civilization and its contents (nakhchivan), Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:50 (eleven years ago) link

yeah the 3-0 was gone midnight
xp

pandemic, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:50 (eleven years ago) link

i remember wilkins getting sent off on a friday as i was staying at my grans and she let me stay up .
Also remember being allowed to stay up on a schoolnight to see denmark beating scotland.

it looks like something rupert the bear would wear (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:53 (eleven years ago) link

greece's attacking players are worse even than ireland's

i remember when samaras joined citeh he described it as a stepping stone to one of europe's biggest clubs

(onimo mutters something about jock stein)

Am I the only one watching Ch-Pol?

HO WBEAUTIFUL IS THE GENTLYFALLINGBLOOD? (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:56 (eleven years ago) link

i'm watching it

Number None, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

poland offering nothing this half so far

pandemic, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

lol I was just laughing at that classic Samaras break there, nice touch, rides a tackle, overruns the ball, has to challenge to keep it, somehow still has it, strides forward past another man, gets excited, shoots ridiculously wide from 30 yards, fixes his hair, expressionless.

His whole career in 10 seconds

xxxp

"What a book!" Terry Bland (onimo), Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

The analysis of the Greek goal was hilarious:

"Good goal"
"Keeper should've saved it in my view"

I can only assume they couldn't see the start of the clip in the studio.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

xxxp - I am too, but it's not too much to write home about at present. Limbersky's looking bright, but no-one's really looking like scoring. It pretty much is what it is.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 16 June 2012 19:59 (eleven years ago) link

poland czech game is shite. lewandowski should've scored first half. that's about it. czech maybe on the front foot now?

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:00 (eleven years ago) link

If Greece votes anti-Europe tomorrow, wouldn't the team have to leave this tournament too?

StanM, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:00 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, Poland look out of ideas

Number None, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:00 (eleven years ago) link

yes

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:00 (eleven years ago) link

xps I'm pretty sure Eng-Arg 1986 was on a Sunday evening, 'cos I have a vivid memory of my pals coming to the door with about fifteen minutes to go, wanting me to come out & play football. I couldn't believe it - "nothing's going to happen now" they said.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

they look scared now tbh xp

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

of limbarski for sure

pandemic, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:03 (eleven years ago) link

czech gonna score now i think

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:04 (eleven years ago) link

The many pronunciations of Dzagoev have been a highlight of this tournament. Grampa Mick just tried "Saguraff".

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:04 (eleven years ago) link

lol samaras arguing with referee while gekas is open

dis civilization and its contents (nakhchivan), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:05 (eleven years ago) link

poland gonna do a new zealand and go out unbeaten at this rate at best

Greece denied a clear penalty, Karagounis is "doing his fruit down there" having been booked for diving.

Temporarily Famous In The Czech Republic (ShariVari), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:06 (eleven years ago) link

it's zagoyev or maybe tzagoyev i think

dis civilization and its contents (nakhchivan), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:06 (eleven years ago) link

IK: Might have been 5pm or 6pm kick-off maybe, but I don't think it was later than that: my aunt & uncle & cousin were there (at my house, not in Mexico) and they lived about 50 miles away so they wouldn't have been there at 10pm or something. If only there was a way of finding out...

Totally committed to the Corrs (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:06 (eleven years ago) link

how many times did karagounis cross himself there?

pandemic, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:06 (eleven years ago) link

It's not very good at the moment, no. But I desperately want Poland to win, they stole my <3 with the first two games.

HO WBEAUTIFUL IS THE GENTLYFALLINGBLOOD? (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:06 (eleven years ago) link

Karagounis kicked the tackler's leg and fell over imo - debatable.

"What a book!" Terry Bland (onimo), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:06 (eleven years ago) link

Should I start watching the Greece game instead?

Totally committed to the Corrs (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:07 (eleven years ago) link

Greece have only ever won one group game before tonight. It'll be ridiculous if Russia go out here.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:07 (eleven years ago) link

TYTON YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARD!

(this remark has been made by a proud PSV fan :)

Can fully see Pilar being a massive disappointment for Wigan next season.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:07 (eleven years ago) link

how many times did karagounis cross himself there?

dunno but he did it wrong every time

"What a book!" Terry Bland (onimo), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:08 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i mean Poland are obviously miles better than CR. They can't even get out of their half now though

Number None, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:08 (eleven years ago) link

what a save!

leggo polska!

cissymanwhore (k3vin k.), Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:08 (eleven years ago) link

Russia are playing shockingly weak right now

breastcrawl, Saturday, 16 June 2012 20:08 (eleven years ago) link

I could try getting in contact with my pals whom I haven't seen for twenty-odd years xp, but no guarantee they'd remember it...
