my air is my only computer, and i use it for basically the same thing as you euler (+ some number crunching). it's fine.

good! another thought: would it be silly to spring the almost $1k for the apple tbolt display now for the retina mbp? I long to have a massive desktop screen instead of 15" (I've loved my 17" mbp over the last three years) but is the quality of external display going to disappoint compared to the retina? I just want something easy on the eyes for all this reading & writing (not much image work & only b/w at that).

Euler, Monday, 18 June 2012 10:33 (eleven years ago) link

personally i can't do serious work at a desk without an external display

caek, Monday, 18 June 2012 10:36 (eleven years ago) link

in my limited experience yesterday, you really only started to notice the retina's "retina-ness" when you got close to the screen. I still think the big 21" and 27" iMac displays are pretty damn good, especially since your viewing distance is usually much farther away

un® (dayo), Monday, 18 June 2012 10:37 (eleven years ago) link

hmm ok. yeah that's sounding right to me.

I def want a laptop so that I can move the machine home & away, so the iMac isn't going to work for now, but the $1k tbolt display looks good.

Euler, Monday, 18 June 2012 10:41 (eleven years ago) link

third rail solution: retina MBP, 11" bare bones MBA, external display, Dropbox, boom, who wants to get lunch

un® (dayo), Monday, 18 June 2012 10:45 (eleven years ago) link

yeah I don't have the cash for that right now

prob need to feel how heavy the retina feels since I'm tired of being on the road lugging this 17" around

Euler, Monday, 18 June 2012 10:47 (eleven years ago) link

fwiw, it didn't feel that much different reading the NYT on retina than it did on, say, an iPhone

also, there was an option on the retina MBP in sys prefs for display size, you could do "Larger - Bigger Text" or "Smaller - More Size" on a lil' slider, that's awesome and I hope they will implement that into snow mountain lion cat so that I can finally tell my parents to stop running their iMac at 640x480

un® (dayo), Monday, 18 June 2012 10:54 (eleven years ago) link

nice, refurb displays are 850 http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/displays

un® (dayo), Monday, 18 June 2012 11:10 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, the new screen "just" feels like iPhone (eg amazing at the time, just seems like the way things should be now)

stet, Monday, 18 June 2012 13:38 (eleven years ago) link

I got a pre-thunderbolt refub display. I think I'd be able to use it with a thunderbolt laptop, it'd just not make the display able to be a thunderbolt hub. But... there are two thunderbolt ports now, so losing one to displayport purposes is fine

mh, Monday, 18 June 2012 13:59 (eleven years ago) link

is there a thread where people talk about excellent laptop bags / backpacks?

Euler, Monday, 18 June 2012 14:13 (eleven years ago) link

I would like a desktop retina display even if it was only 15"

stet, Monday, 18 June 2012 14:44 (eleven years ago) link

I take back what I said earlier about it being too heavy. I'm used to a smaller-screen laptop, but the retina MBP is sooooo much lighter than the old one. I also listened to some music over the built-in speakers - nothing amazing but adequate, much better sound quality than a Macbook Air or my Thinkpad. The screen is amazing - text much clearer than before.

Lee626, Monday, 18 June 2012 17:13 (eleven years ago) link

built in speakers for savages only imo

the late great, Monday, 18 June 2012 19:09 (eleven years ago) link

well i'm sort of dumb, didn't realize the 2.6 ghz mbp came w a 512 gb ssd ... and i thought you had to upgrade the cpu and then pay to upgrade the ssd

guess this makes it somewhat more reasonable

the late great, Monday, 18 June 2012 19:21 (eleven years ago) link

euler you want Spire USA

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 18 June 2012 19:54 (eleven years ago) link

haha yeah I have three Spire bags already! but I don't like their new models yet, & I'd like something smaller, just enough for a iPad or mbp & maybe a book; the bags I have are big & work super well for air travel, but seem bulky for just going to & fro work.

Euler, Monday, 18 June 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

Does anyone have a favorite ipad bag, case or sleeve? Still looking for the right one of any of the three.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 18 June 2012 20:05 (eleven years ago) link

I just have a dmaryc

I just ordered one from here: http://www.grovemade.com/

sofatruck, Monday, 18 June 2012 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

Those are pretty. $160 is more than I want to spend though. And I'm allergic to wool.

thanks iPhone!

What I meant was I just have a Smart Cover. I think it's pretty slick. My bag is a Timbuk2 laptop messenger that I got five years ago that fits a 15" MBP but I don't really transport my laptop around much in its old age. Bags are the best; apart from Timbuk2 here are some sweet bag companies some of which make some iPad-sized things:

http://www.chromebagsstore.com/
http://trashmessengerbags.com/
http://courierbags.com/

Someone should really start a bag thread if there isn't one.

"Holy crap," I mutter, as he gently taps my area (silby), Monday, 18 June 2012 20:46 (eleven years ago) link

please do, I can post all my ridiculous bags I own

It is seriously shameful, I got addicted to buying a few things in person and online a few years ago and realized that I had a shitload of bags and shoes. /wronggenderstereotype

mh, Monday, 18 June 2012 20:58 (eleven years ago) link

there is a messenger bag thread. i think "laptop bags" are kind of silly in this era of small laptops with good build quality. obv they make sense if you're still rocking a plastic 16" acer or something.

caek, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:07 (eleven years ago) link

a friend who had his laptop on him the other night was explaining that he liked some brands but they didn't have built-in laptop pouches. I had one with said pouch years ago and I think they're actually a liability if you're going to ever use the bag without a laptop in it

that said, you can get a 13" macbook into a really small bag, apparently

mh, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:10 (eleven years ago) link

I have the smart cover for the ipad but would love a sleeve or something that isn't a piece of crap. Or a small bag that I could carry alone or throw in a bigger bag as needed. But throwing it in the bags I have now is bad as it has no protection at all from whatever other shit I'm carrying around.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:10 (eleven years ago) link

are you one of those people that is worried about the back of their iPad getting scratched?

"Holy crap," I mutter, as he gently taps my area (silby), Monday, 18 June 2012 21:17 (eleven years ago) link

yeah really I just want a good bag into which I can throw a laptop iPad + book & hop on domestic flights & out & about town w/o feeling like a Sherpa.

Euler, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:21 (eleven years ago) link

also want backpack rather than messenger bag b/c I don't really get messenger bags; don't they always feel like they're gonna fall off

also detest how as you "mature" in my profession you seem to advance to briefcases b/c you hold those in your hand & to me that defeats the main purpose of bags, which is to let me keep my hands free

Euler, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:23 (eleven years ago) link

backpacks look weird if you're wearing a suit jacket is the idea there, i think. like you look like an intern at kpmg or something. this probably doesn't really apply to you.

keep my macbook air and papers in a tote bag tbh

caek, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:36 (eleven years ago) link

I have this sleeve. The smart cover can fit in there, but it's a tight fit with it on. Really impressed with it so far:

mh, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:38 (eleven years ago) link

i have one of these for air travel tho http://www.baileyworks.com/professional/citizen-pack/options/#

caek, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:39 (eleven years ago) link

I do not wear suit jackets regularly

actually the mathematicians I hang with regularly rock the backpack & jacket look, esp. in Europe

tote bag would be ok except then it's hanging awkwardly on one shoulder & I just don't want to think about it, balancing it just right on my stately shoulders

Euler, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:40 (eleven years ago) link

I was in the Chrome bag store in Chicago, while already wearing one of the smaller Chrome bags, and I was way tempted to get a larger rolltop

But then, what would I do, put my current bag inside the rolltop to take it back?

mh, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:40 (eleven years ago) link

i think it looks pretty bad, but if you're going to go jacket+backpack, academia is definitely the place where it's the least bad

caek, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:42 (eleven years ago) link

Backpacks 4 ever.

Jeff, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:43 (eleven years ago) link

shoulda said "rock" the look b/c yeah it's pretty bad

I avoid it by skipping the jacket except on interviews [sunglasses.jpg]

Euler, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:44 (eleven years ago) link

I have this for my iPad and love it

I have a regular backpack, I carry around my macbook air in a padded mailing envelope -_-

un® (dayo), Monday, 18 June 2012 22:25 (eleven years ago) link

are you one of those people that is worried about the back of their iPad getting scratched?

Nah, I just have a habit of throwing metal things in with glass things and not thinking. Scratched the crap out of my last phone with my keys, and the case of my laptop with a the bottlecap on a beer.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 18 June 2012 22:50 (eleven years ago) link

my ipad slips between text books, doing well so far

Seriously considering an 11" Air, trying to convince a US Apple Store to apply the Canadian education discount (start school in Canada in Sept but want the Air now....) They're telling me to just pretend I'm at a US school when I order from the education store. Worrying this will somehow backfire down the line.

Any thoughts on good cheap (non-Apple) displays to complement the Air, or is that a separate thread?

ljubljana, Monday, 18 June 2012 22:53 (eleven years ago) link

The good Dells are really good. Unfortunately there's a lot of deeply shit Dells too, and I'm not up-to-date on which are which. The 30" is a stunner, though.

stet, Monday, 18 June 2012 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

look into ordering your air directly from amazon, it might come out to be the same as ordering a MBA from an apple store since you have to pay tax in the latter scenario

un® (dayo), Monday, 18 June 2012 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

the secret to the education discount is that they don't care as long as you buy shit from them

the late great, Monday, 18 June 2012 22:57 (eleven years ago) link

mh - I really like that Maki sleeve from incase. Looks perfect.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 18 June 2012 22:59 (eleven years ago) link

xp thanks dayo, will look into amazon. How come people don't just order stuff from the education store and get the discount all the time? There seem to be no controls whatsoever.
