actually the mathematicians I hang with regularly rock the backpack & jacket look, esp. in Europe

tote bag would be ok except then it's hanging awkwardly on one shoulder & I just don't want to think about it, balancing it just right on my stately shoulders

I was in the Chrome bag store in Chicago, while already wearing one of the smaller Chrome bags, and I was way tempted to get a larger rolltop

But then, what would I do, put my current bag inside the rolltop to take it back?

i think it looks pretty bad, but if you're going to go jacket+backpack, academia is definitely the place where it's the least bad

Nah, I just have a habit of throwing metal things in with glass things and not thinking. Scratched the crap out of my last phone with my keys, and the case of my laptop with a the bottlecap on a beer.

Seriously considering an 11" Air, trying to convince a US Apple Store to apply the Canadian education discount (start school in Canada in Sept but want the Air now....) They're telling me to just pretend I'm at a US school when I order from the education store. Worrying this will somehow backfire down the line.

Any thoughts on good cheap (non-Apple) displays to complement the Air, or is that a separate thread?

The good Dells are really good. Unfortunately there's a lot of deeply shit Dells too, and I'm not up-to-date on which are which. The 30" is a stunner, though.

look into ordering your air directly from amazon, it might come out to be the same as ordering a MBA from an apple store since you have to pay tax in the latter scenario

the secret to the education discount is that they don't care as long as you buy shit from them

There's a "company discount" for me but it's less than the education one. I guess it's called the "Employee Purchase Program" but it's pretty marginal

Thanks, I didn't know that. Still planning on pressing ahead, just procrastinating over spec now. Thinking I'll upgrade the RAM to 8GB but unsure about the flash - will go for the 128 model but can't decide whether I'll regret it in 4 years or so if I don't get the 256.

the price premium to upgrade to 256 is not worth it - just get an external, imo

not true ime. I did actually buy an iMac a couple weeks after my aunt got a laptop.

Price-check MacMall vs. EDU discount - you can customize through them and sometimes the savings on sales tax comes out even better than the EDU discount.

i cant imagine rockin a laptop with only 128gb internal hard drive, it would be like a step back to 2004

MacMall sadly costlier. I might see if the store will order it in for me with the edu discount and then sell it to me. I'm such a wimp. I fear that markers visit (forums talk about 'audits').

Considering a new computer soon, most likely a MacBook but purchased from Best Buy Apple bc I need damage protection plan and Apple seems allergic to it. Why?? I was finally able to get insurance on my iPhone from AT&T after 1 serious incident and years of paranoia. The protection plan on my Dell paid for itself after one very destructive episode somnambulism and I can't see going without one now.

EDU was one purchase per product line per year a few years ago

new iPhone applecare has a blanket "pay $50, we swap out your damaged phone" plan

Oh, I could live with that. I will definitely check it out when I get a new iPhone. The AT&T plan has a deductible of $100 I think. Maybe $150. It's $6/month, so it's still worth it.
