Quite looking frwd to tonight although part of me suspects Portugal will win quite easily. I hope Gebre Selassie keeps up his attacking movements rather than being solely concerned with Ronaldo.

pandemic you dont remember Arconada making a complete arse of things?

it looks like something rupert the bear would wear (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 21 June 2012 09:59 (eleven years ago) link

No? I remember the Spanish goalie from '82 palming one straight to the feet of Gerry Armstrong. Was that the same keeper?

The only clip of Euro 84 that ever gets played is Motty's "Platini! I've not seen a game like this in years!" from the France-Portugal semi

I was living in West Germany at the time and remember what a failure they were at that champs considering the likes of Littbarski and Rummenigge on the team. Was cheering for Denmark as plucky outsiders though.

gonna send him to outer space, to hug another face (NickB), Thursday, 21 June 2012 10:42 (eleven years ago) link

The Guardian's classic youtube piece today has a load of zlatan stuff including a documentary about his time at Malmo. It is hilarious just how much seething resentment there is from the captain? towards him. Even after he's been sold to Ajax the dislike is palpable.

I was looking at the qualification for Euro 84 earlier, and it turns out Northern Ireland beat West Germany home-and-away, and would've qualified instead of them had they not lost in Turkey (who were rubbish then)

Wales came even closer, missing out only thanks to a 91st minute Yugoslav winner against (I think) Bulgaria in the final game of the group

i imagine roy will call alex oxlade-chamberlain into the side to deal with the threat of pirlo, what with him having marked him out of that champions league match at the emirates.

I don't remember 1984 Euros AT ALL. It's a complete blank to me, I should really track some of the matches down and give them a go. I'm not sure why I completely missed out on it 'cos I remember 1982 WC really vividly, and every Euro and WC since 1986.

Exactly the same for me. I remember being vaguely aware that it was happening, but I don't recall actually watching any of it. Maybe because England weren't in it, though I don't know how important that would have been - my key memories of 82 are all about that Brazil team, Paolo Rossi, and Schumacher trying to kick a French bloke's head off.

back then if England didn't make a tournament the tv companies weren't interested in showing most games.

Shearer just bloody loves being in a football stadium

Number None, Thursday, 21 June 2012 18:36 (eleven years ago) link

This side-on view makes Shearer look a bit like Putin

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 21 June 2012 18:36 (eleven years ago) link

Cech should not grow a beard.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 21 June 2012 18:41 (eleven years ago) link

Jurgen Klinsmann just described Ronaldo as a "floater". I know Ronaldo's not the most popular guy, but possibly a bit harsh?

Taking the piss having Martin Atkinson as one of the goal-line refs.

i dont really notice referees much but howard webb is always terrible, the worst example of a ref who starts laissez faire, lets the game turn into a scrapfest and then has to spend the last half hour sending players off and shouting and pointing at random ppl like some hideous overgrown robbie keane
