God, her & PH explains why Helmet went to shit.

David R., Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:30 (seventeen years ago) link

oh ok xp

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Ha - I like that Kingfish needed an addendum for Page Hamilton, as if just listing RHETT MILLER is enough.

David R., Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

she told my friend that when she met lindsay lohan, lindsay loudly referred to her as a dinosaur as she was walking away. poor winona!

Jeez, Winona's only like 33 or something. She had birthday recently and I was kinda shocked she was so young. I can barely rember a time when she was not around (I'm 24 BTW)

C. Grisso/McCain, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

as if just listing RHETT MILLER is enough.

dude had some solo stuff going on, plus i prefer the old 97s to helmet anyday

kingfish, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Rhett Miller is always enough. Rowr.

Laurel, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:32 (seventeen years ago) link

tom's friend ran into her and was convinced she was checking him out. i'm convinced she was wondering who the fuck the asshole was pronouncing her name as "wee-ona"

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Rhett Miller (of swoony blogcrush fame)

David R., Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

And I think the last ish of Chunklet had some list of all the muso & actor types she's been affliated with. The article was not written in the most congratulatory tone.

kingfish, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

haha winona took decades to wind up in mr deeds -- lindsay practically started out there! and it's not like even mean girls is going to have the longevity of heathers or those burton movies.

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Wait a minute, Chunklet was being ... sarcastic?

jaymc, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:36 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, nabisco. my friend was totally outraged. she said w. was extremely nice, btw, but completely deranged.

lauren, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:38 (seventeen years ago) link

pop roffles aside, The Age of Innocence

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I wd love to see La Lohan in a period drama. Aside from Mean Girls.

David R., Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

that movie is bad, but she was perfectly cast.

horseshoe, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I would eat a whole bag of "pop roffles" by myself

TOMBOT, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

(Ryder in Age of Innocence, I mean. Mean Girls is brilliant.

horseshoe, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

More discussion of Corky in Night on Earth, please.

Most awkward "you are not that character" performance in movie history.

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

no, that movie sucked

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I love Winona Ryder.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I like that movie, I just don't see how anyone expected that character to be remotely workable, particularly as played by Winona Ryder.

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean who casts Winona Ryder as a MECHANIC?

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Asia Argento.

David R., Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Jeremy Toback.

David R., Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

DIRECTOR JON TURTLETAUB

i didn't like roxy carmichael - was another one of those films where the interesting outsider got the sandpaper treatment.

koogs, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Tara Reid as ... scientist
Winona Ryder as ... mechanic
Jeffrey Tambor as ... Suge Knight's bodyguard
and Jake Busey as ... President Thompson

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:51 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm not really sure what your problem is but those all sound ok to me.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:52 (seventeen years ago) link

And middle-named after Aldous Huxley's wife! Her given name is pretty hardcore with the assonance: Winona Laura Horowitz. It's like a tongue twister. Winona Laura Horowitz.

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow. Is she related to James Salter?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:56 (seventeen years ago) link

ok dude seriously? in what way is that a tongue twister? it's pretty easy to say.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:57 (seventeen years ago) link

um, i think he might have been projecting a little

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 1 March 2007 18:57 (seventeen years ago) link

maybe less a tongue twister than a poem! the assonance, the rhythm -- it's a tripling up of internal O + schwa, and in perfect iambic tetrameter, if you say it fast enough:

winOnA lOrA hOrAwitz!

the stress drops on the O every time, and then immediately comes down to the schwa!

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:02 (seventeen years ago) link

her name is practically "oh-ah oh-ah oh-ah!"

nabisco, Thursday, 1 March 2007 19:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Being too ill to be in Godfather 3, thusly causing the role to be played by a cross-eyed dead dwarf on stilts with the skill and conviction of a fax machine.

Quite an uncanny replacement actually!!!

i remember liking it a lot, though i can't remember much about it. probably time for a revisit.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Sunday, 16 November 2014 06:59 (nine years ago) link

Please post if you do. I'm not sure if I was just in the right frame of mind (I saw the Godard film in the afternoon--typically difficult and discursive--so I may have been extra-susceptible to something soft and light) and would like to hear from someone else. It's the kind of film that seems made for Ebert, and he didn't like it, although he did have good things to say about Ryder. I agree with him that the Roxy backstory could have been handled better. But I really was surprised by how much I liked almost every character (the would-be boyfriend, adoptive father, and guidance counselor especially--and Ryder, of course), loved the atmospheric score, and thought the requisite happy ending was fine.

The Age of Innocence is a strange omission.

two weeks pass...

As her NY retro draws closer, has anyone seen 1969? A hippie bath with the writer of On Golden Pond as the auteur, i can't imagine how atrocious it must be, even w/ Bruce Dern and Joanna Cassidy in support.

Apparently there's a recent Olive Films DVD of Mermaids... didn't know it was well regarded enough for that.

btw The Age of Innocence appears in the series now, and in 35mm.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 15:57 (five years ago) link

i saw 1969 when it came out and it was terrible iirc
i don't remember anything about it beyond it sucking

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 16:00 (five years ago) link

Mermaids has a modest cult, appropriately befitting a film featuring a family made up of Cher, Winona, and Christina Ricchi.

Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 16:24 (five years ago) link

Also the Olive Films release happened simply because MGM is farming out 95% of their catalogue DVD/BluRay reissues to 3rd party boutique labels.

Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 16:26 (five years ago) link

for whatever reason i have rewatched mermaids twice in the last couple of years. it's not bad, winona and cher's performances are the centre of the film and they're pretty good. bob hoskins' american accent is terrible and there's a couple of extremely o_0 elements

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 16:27 (five years ago) link

My local theatre is doing a mini Winona-fest: Heathers, Edward Scissorhands, Reality Bites, and Dracula. I saw Scissorhands last night - most enjoyed the dinner table scenes and any time Alan Arkin has a line.
