I'm almost positive it was a Bon Jovi song that I was hearing when I realized that I hate Rock & Roll.

And does "Bon Jovi" translate into "Good Joke"?

Dave225, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't really give them much thought but when one of their songs comes on in the pub I usually quite like it. I remember my friend Sam buying Slippery When Wet when it came out and my being a bit worried cause it looked like a tough boy's metal album. But then he played it to me and I realised it wasn't really.

you know, bon jovi have made some great pop songs - and i speak as someone who HATED them in sixth grade, back when all my friends were totally in love with jon. but 'wanted dead or alive' is classic beyond compare. they totally fit the jersey mold, trying to be bruce springsteen tricked out in leather pants and lots of frost & hairspray.

bon jovi is also classic for helping break cinderella and skid row - 'slave to the grind' is one of my top 5 records of the late '80s/early '90s hard rock boom.

SILENCE, FOOL. ;-)

No, things are fine, thanks for asking. But music that fills me with hate will always provoke open loathing. ;-)

I am actually reminded now, though, of an interview Mr. Jon did in 1992 in MM where he claimed that Nirvana/Soundgarden/Mudhoney/Pearl Jam et al were obviously 'influenced' by him. Having concluded that his head was severed before being implanted deep between his leathery buttcheeks, I will agree that further taunting of him is a bit like beating up a baby.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Obviously, Poison are the most important band of the 1980's.

"Talk Dirty to Me" is the only worthwhile song I've heard from either Poison or Great White. Better than Bon Jovi my ass. Even New Jersey smokes Open Up and Say . . . Ahhh and Twice Shy.

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Better than Bon Jovi my ass.

Nah, gotta disagree. Poison by a country mile here. "Don't want NOTHIN' but a GOOD TIME!"

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think you'll find the line is "don't NEED nothin but a good time" implying that they already HAVE a good time and therefore want for nothing.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Why, even better for them, then. :-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sundar is correct. Poison is false metal most pernicious. If I'm going to get the NY Dolls, then I want Thunders & Johansen, thanks. Bon Jovi may suck (though they know their way around a pop melody pretty well: "Wanted" would make a GREAT song for whoever it is that does that "I do/wonder if you feel the same way I do" R&B song that was on the radio about a month ago), but they're not false metal, because they have no metal pretentions.

That said, both bands must be fed to sea serpents at the earliest available opportunity.

John Darnielle, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

My favorite Poison story:

A goofy guy no one really liked in my high school was horning in on a discussion about hot women in the music industry. His contribution was Rikki Rocket. After our giggles subsided, we informed him that his beloved Ricki was a man. His response: "Really? Are you sure? Damn. Still, he makes a really hot chick."

From this point on, I couldn't help but look at Poison as That Awful Band With The Hot Shemale Drummer.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dr ess Rikki Rockett

Did Poison, though? All time, hands down, greatest quote ever: Rikki Rockett on his band's work: "We don't make art. We make hamburgers." GENIUS.

It's interesting how Bon Jovi are selling their tickets know in Oct. for their UK June '06 tour. I heard some tickets were on sale for £75; at that price they can bugger off! They are not the band they used to be in the 80s and early 90s. They have "sold out" and "poppified" themselves just to make more money; just like when Cher changed to dance music and brought out "believe", she "sold out" to sell more records!

Gareth, Thursday, 6 October 2005 01:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Phoo, Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi man, Bon, Jovi. Classic or dud. Meh that's tough. If they're not the epitomy of dudness in rock, what is ? Classic pop you say ? Now that's almost debatable.

From the Daily Mirror:

Bon Jovi are offering fans a lot more satisfaction than the Rolling Stones - selling tickets for their gigs from just £12.50. The Livin' On A Prayer rockers have stepped in with their cut-price offer after the Stones announced it would cost from £95 up to £375 to see them on their 50th anniversary tour. But touts are flogging the tickets for thousands. Rob Hallett, Bon Jovi's UK tour promoter from AEG Live, said the band felt that rock fans were being priced out of the market and were determined to act. "I was delighted when they came to me insisting on ticket prices for the Because We Can tour next year that enabled all to attend," Mr. Hallett said. A Bon Jovi source added: "We are in the middle of a recession and that's why the band think £12.50 is perfect."

Sambora’s substitute is Canadian Philip Xenidis, also known as Phil X, who filled in for Sambora several times before when he was unavailable. According to sources, Xenidis comes a lot cheaper than Sambora. He is reportedly getting paid a substantially smaller sum of $10,000 per month.

So the guitarist in Bon Jovi, scab or no, is making $120,000 a year? That's pretty pitiful.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:24 (ten years ago) link

I mean, obviously he's not getting the presumably massive guarantee, the cut of merch sales, etc. that full members of the band get, but where does that $120,000 fall on the scale as far as what touring session players at that level normally get?

I actually saw them in 2010 when my sister wanted to go and while his voice was definitely not what it used to be, he was in tune, sustained notes well, and adjusted the range and keys of songs to fit his aging voice. This is something else.

And liberty she pirouette (Sund4r), Monday, 18 April 2022 19:00 (two years ago) link

If it's just that his vocal range has narrowed, he wouldn't sound so bad if he didn't slur the words.

Wasn't sure which thread to post this on, but a decent piece on aging singers, and the various ways they deal with changes in (and damage to) their voice:

https://ultimateclassicrock.com/rock-singers-vocal-changes/

When I saw the Who back in May, I was pretty surprised to hear Daltrey hitting notes that he hadn't been able to hit in 1989 (though he had a stretch of crapulence, most apparent in 2006-2012 or so).

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 12 July 2022 19:53 (one year ago) link

A classic fuckin' dud if ever there were one. They represented a lot of what was wrong with rock music in the 80s and 90s.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 12 July 2022 19:58 (one year ago) link

Two Bon Jovi threads reactivating at once made me think someone had died.

Such a dud. I grew up on the east coast, and remember when they broke out, and no joke, I heard them so much and they just gave me such a headache I stopped with the radio for a while. And that was me as, like, a 12-year old boy. Not for me.

Daltrey had throat/node surgery that has helped immensely. He also (maybe learned on ILX?) seems to be using the occasional scream sample to make sure he doesn't blow out his voice, but I saw him on a rare solo gig and he sounded pretty good with no noticeable sweetening. (For a time I'm convinced I was one of a very small handful of people that had seen Pete solo, and Roger solo, but never the Who!)

You know who else seems to be doing a lot better? Axl. The first I noticed it was when I saw a clip of him in AC/DC, which is really hard to sing/scream, and he sounded OK. I wouldn't say he sounds great these days, but he's no disaster. I saw some clips of the nostalgia fest at Wrigley Field last week, with Def Leppard, Poison, Motley Crue and Joan Jett, and everyone seemed ... fine. Even Vince Neil, who sounded bad but nowhere near as bad as I've heard him. Maybe because he wasn't singing half the time, lol.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 12 July 2022 20:40 (one year ago) link

Yeah, Daltrey's surgery made a massive difference -- he sounds FAR better on 2019's WHO than on 2006's Endless Wire. He does use samples live for the screams in "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Love Reign O'er Me," but he's doing...something during those samples. Some kind of scream, but not one that could stand on its own without the sample. Definitely no autotune live, though (but a little bit on WHO).

I saw Joan Jett in 2015 (opening for the Who) and she sounded perfect. Great band, her voice was as powerful as ever, and it was an all-killer/no-filler set.

Someone I'm curious about is Brian Johnson. I only saw AC/DC once, in 1996, but he (understandably) had a little trouble with the highest notes. I would hope his voice has held up somewhat (though obviously the members of AC/DC didn't think it has, since they replaced him).

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 12 July 2022 20:58 (one year ago) link

The saddest one I ever saw was Lou Gramm, way back in 1999.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 12 July 2022 21:00 (one year ago) link

Stevie Nicks is another one whose voice is nowhere near as supple as it once was, though it's so distinctive it doesn't matter. Peter Gabriel and Sting both sounded pretty good the last I saw them. McCartney is finally, finally starting to fade a little. Mick Jagger, sounding OK! I once saw Crosby Stills and Nash in the very early '90s, iirc, and I remember them sounding pretty bad. A lot of these acts inevitably fade, but many of them are smart/rich enough to get the voice training they need to carry on.

I'm a little surprised AC/DC didn't tour this summer. Maybe they have a farewell tour planned, assuming any of them are up for it? It's telling that Brian, Cliff and Phil came off the sidelines for the last album. Is that the first AC/DC album they've never toured behind?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 12 July 2022 21:05 (one year ago) link

I think it is, but it came out in late 2020, and no one was touring (or even planning tours) then. If Phil's in the lineup, I'll go see them.

McCartney is apparently letting backing vocalists do some of the heavier lifting. And Jagger does sound pretty good, but then, live Jagger and studio Jagger were always two very different things. For one, live Jagger didn't always (or often) attempt the higher notes, and there are some songs -- "Rip This Joint" springs to mind -- that they played live in a lower key when the songs were new.

Keep: Keep the Faith (song not album), which made my mum a fan for a while.

Though the idea that it stunted their US career, much like Freedom! '90 ostensibly did for GM, suggests that going all Happy Mondays was unwelcome stateside for huge selling late 80s acts (we have to therefore conclude Mysterious Ways is more... Soup Dragons mayb)
