is homestuck actually worth bothering with? looked like too much effort tbh

Nhex, Friday, 7 September 2012 22:19 (eleven years ago) link

I really enjoyed Problem Sleuth tho it dragged a lot in the very end. I read the "prologue" of Homestuck when it started and then lost interest and all of a sudden two years later all my nerd acquaintances were jizzing about every update and dressing up as god knows what and I just had no interest in going back to it.

"Pffft" --buddha (silby), Saturday, 8 September 2012 00:06 (eleven years ago) link

i found it today. 'Too much effort' seems about right really.

i think it seems really impressive. the fandom seems like well like a fandom

thomp, Sunday, 9 September 2012 11:58 (eleven years ago) link

The start of Homestuck is really boring. Going to attempt to persevere but... really, this has a dedicated fandom?

emil.y, Sunday, 9 September 2012 14:41 (eleven years ago) link

i was totally with it as soon as the improperly-coded inventory gag got going

thomp, Sunday, 9 September 2012 14:44 (eleven years ago) link

there's no actual gameplay in homestuck, right?

Mordy, Sunday, 9 September 2012 14:47 (eleven years ago) link

as of a couple hours in there has been a section where i have been able to walk around the locations and examine things, but it was skippable and nothing i did could impact the plot

thomp, Sunday, 9 September 2012 14:51 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, it's not a game. The inventory-coding thing was an okay gag, but nothing mind-blowing. I'm just wondering how/where/why it changes into this cosplay-enabling fandom-instigating fantasia.

TG: what are you an idiot
TG: of course there are monsters in your house
TG: youre in some weird evil monster dimension come on
TG: skepticism is the crutch of cinematic troglodytes
TG: like hey mom dad theres a dinosaur or a ghost or whatever in my room. "yeah right junior go back to bed"
TG: fuck you mom and dad how many times are we going to watch this trope unfold it wasnt goddamn funny the first time i saw it
TG: just once id like to see dad crap his pants when a kid says theres a vampire in his closet
TG: "OH SHIT EVERYONE IN THE MINIVAN"
TG: be fuckin dad of the year right there

thomp, Sunday, 9 September 2012 16:29 (eleven years ago) link

This is pretty well done but I've now made it to Recap 2 and
1. it has taken really unjustifiable amounts of my weekend, wtf am I doing
2. if a recap of material I already read makes me go "oh, is that what happened / who that is / uh I don't remember that at all" nearly every other sentence it's probably a bad sign (and part of the recap is marked "previously unseen")
3. despite 1 I'm only halfway through by # of pages and beginning to realise that it may not actually be finished yet, which is not a bad thing in itself but is going to piss me off if I spend more days wading all the way through hoping for a grand resolution

having said that there are some neat ideas in here, I like the art style, and I am curious to see what happens

(I am probably too old and earnest to be the target audience anyway - the target audience would never type something so longwinded, sincere and point-missing - but in other ways I am totally the target audience: weird RPG/adventure game mechanics, mutant time-cats, inscrutable computer systems? yes please)

still small voice of clam (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 9 September 2012 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

on the kickstarter for the adventure game he wants to write he says he'll finish homestuck in 2013
