Heh. Is Logan Sq. really that dangerous anymore, though? There have been "only" 17 homicides reported in Logan Sq. within the last five years, vs. 100+ in Humboldt Park, per http://homicides.redeyechicago.com/neighborhood/logan-square/.
― Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 19:16 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah that's pretty OTM about Uptown.
― carl agatha, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 19:23 (eleven years ago) link
xp R had a similar complaint. I suggested she write an angry email to the site owner demanding they change that one to Humboldt.

most of those seem like pretty boilerplate stereotypes about chicago neighborhoods. like is it scathing satire to point out that boystown is gay? or there are bros in wrigleyville? though they look cool i guess
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 20:26 (eleven years ago) link
sorry for being a bummer and for liking the word "scathing" too much

the hyde park one made me laugh tbh

the little stretch of lincoln by my house has multiple antique shops, a vegan coffee shop, and transistor, which has fun music gadgets and art books and music books and a little bit of new vinyl and art. none of it's superexciting but it's all concentrated in a couple of blocks. then you go to trader joe's.
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 21:51 (eleven years ago) link
Is Beverly worth the drive? I've never been there and I always kinda forget it exists.
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 21:51 (eleven years ago) link
I am zero help in those categories.

laurie's planet of sound is my favorite record store but i was just praising logan hardware in this thread a few weeks ago - it's a great record store and then if you buy stuff they let you into their vintage arcade game museum, all set up for free plays - so that's my favorite newish record store. saki is also worth checking out if you're in that area, though it's mostly new vinyl.
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 21:53 (eleven years ago) link
Pleasant more or less well organized antique/vintage stores: Broadway Antique Market, Edgewater Antique Market, Roost, Carlos and Sarah's Surplus of OptionsDig through the filthy piles of dusty stuff antique stores: Lincoln Antique Mall, Brownstone Antiques
The only vegan food spots I know are Chicago Diner and Karen's.
― carl agatha, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 21:57 (eleven years ago) link
Beverly as a neighborhood is worth a look for being frozen in 1966 (easy enough to drive down 95th from Western to Ashland and see it). Beverly Records is gigantic and fun.
Also nearby is Mr. Peabody Records, which is mostly dance music but worth a visit when you're down there.

You can plan a decent run of vintage shopping starting at Brownstone and then going north on Clark until you jog over to Broadway for BAM and EAM. A lot of the shops on Clark (like Scout) are ~fancy vintage~ stuff but it's fun to go look.
Lincoln Antique Mall and Surplus of Options are w/in walking distance of each other on Lincoln Ave. Then you can go to Trader Joe's and then to n/a's corridor of funtimes.
― carl agatha, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 22:03 (eleven years ago) link
ha i guess nothing's changed then, thanks everyone tho!
beverly records was dope when i went abt 7 years ago.

"n/a's corridor of funtimes" is what he calls his butt.
― carl agatha, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 22:04 (eleven years ago) link
Maybe that's changed.
Oh oh oh, what has changed is that Andersonville has Scout and Brimfield, which are both vintage and pricey but really amazingly curated.

p sure scout has been around for a few years-- i remember talking to the dudes who ran it, nice guys.
maybe that was a diff fancy antique place in andersonville tho?

In terms of new vegan places, there are a couple of Native Foods locations that I haven't been to. There's also Urban Vegan, at Montrose/Ashland, which is decent.

I went into Laurie's the other week for the first time in a while and was interested to see that vinyl seems to be their focus now. I don't know if their inventory has actually changed, but vinyl is now in the main racks in the front of the store. I wonder if other record stores are going that route as their business becomes more niche. Laurie's cracks me up, though: so many used R.E.M. and Johnny Cash CDs.

And another Andersonville antique place worth checking out: Woolly Mammoth, next to Taste of Lebanon. Lots of fun taxidermied stuff.

wow i have never heard of native foods but i guess theyre all over?

for used books - bucket o' blood, which opened abt a year(?) ago at california/milwaukee, specializing in sci-fi/fantasy/horror. they also have some records

Mana Food Bar is probably the most popular vegetarian (not exclusively vegan) restaurant that's opened within the last few years.

So, wow, if driving through Grant Park on Balbo this afternoon was any indication, the Taste is an even bigger bust this year. It looked empty as hell. And, unsurprisingly, I guess no one is paying the $25 to sit in the Petrillo shell seats when the other alternative is free seating on the lawn. Is it bad that I hope this just dies completely?

I'm back. Let's party.

At the taste if you want.
Gr80- I saw other cool looking vintage/antique shops besides BAM etc on Broadway near Loyola but I don't recall names. Worth a stroll. There was one on the east side of Browadway just north of Granville.
One that I love a lot is Night & Day Antiques on Belmont a few blocks east of Western. I got some cool bargains there. http://www.nightanddayvintage.com/
There is one total hole in the wall junk shop that I love on the east side of Western around Division. Idk if it has a sign (or name). I'll try to find it or maybe somebody else here knows? Maybe not a destination, but definitely worth stopping to see of you're in the area (and if anyone can tell you where it is).
Oh, and also a place called Surplus of Options on Lincoln at Addison is pretty great. Resale/vintage/stuff.
And there are two on Damen at the Brown line stop. Mode, which is another interesting jumblefuck and Hoard which is a little pickier but more resale/vintage than antique (http://hoardchicago.com/).
I hope that this info is useful and something a little outside the usual suggestions.

There are a few MCM places I like too, but they're not quite as fun. It I can get names if you want.
Oh - there is one cool small one on Milwaukee right next door to Disco City Music store. It's new and I can't find the name but if you're in the area check it out.
Xp- I can't believe I know all this tbh. I am glad gr80 asked an I answered bc I am going to put all that info in one place on Google docs for future reference.
― Je55e, Thursday, 12 July 2012 01:37 (eleven years ago) link
My thumbs are tired. I should have waited till I got home to post all that.
I hope that Hoard has things like a stacks of all issues of Red Eye dating back to 2004.
― Odd Spice (Eazy), Thursday, 12 July 2012 01:38 (eleven years ago) link
I love Carlos & Sarah's Surplus of Options, too, but wasn't sure if it qualified as "antique."

― ♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 12 July 2012 01:39 (eleven years ago) link
DISCO CITY RECORDS #6 is right off the Blue Line in Logan Square.
― DX Dx DX (dan m), Thursday, 12 July 2012 01:41 (eleven years ago) link
You could hit up Longman & Eagle while you're there but it's about as vegan as the Publican.
There is also a newish used book store there, that I haven't been to, if you're into that sort of thing.
― DX Dx DX (dan m), Thursday, 12 July 2012 01:42 (eleven years ago) link
Did Jesse just post all that? I can't keep up with the thread.
― DX Dx DX (dan m), Thursday, 12 July 2012 01:53 (eleven years ago) link
The used book store by Disco City and the MCM-ish store is small but seems interesting. I didn't have time to browse much when I stopped in.
Dan, I don't think I posted anything you did.
Surplus of options is more resale/stuff/junk, but I it is fun.
― Je55e, Thursday, 12 July 2012 02:01 (eleven years ago) link
There is a vintage stove store across the street and up the block a little bit from DISCO CITY #6.
