My folks have stayed at the Days at Clark/Diversey as well and had no complaints.

LL if you have UP stories you feel like telling I would like to hear them.

There is a vintage stove store across the street and up the block a little bit from DISCO CITY #6.

^^by this I mean the place below, that always has some old-timey gas appliances in the storeroom windows

Martin Heaters & Incinerators = no relation

DX Dx DX (dan m), Thursday, 12 July 2012 15:04 (eleven years ago) link

i think the problem is that this is short notice - they were going to come in a week from today.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 12 July 2012 15:05 (eleven years ago) link

xp - I have to get my photos in order, then I can remember more deets.

Initial thoughts: It's beautiful and hiking was great. Second, it's not nearly as remote as I thought it would be. There was phone/data service all the way up to the entrance to the park. Third, we listened to a radio program that basically read the newspaper -- classifieds, lost dogs, coupons, graduation parties, baby showers (congrats Angelique!), loooooooong explanations of beefs between various parties regarding a letter to the school board and a "leak" within the board. Hilarious.

Also I made D take a special trip to Houghton to see what it was like. It's big city compared to Ontonagon!

I remain smug and proud of myself for bringing just the right amount of food and drink too.

And there are two on Damen at the Brown line stop. Mode, which is another interesting jumblefuck and Hoard which is a little pickier but more resale/vintage than antique (http://hoardchicago.com/).

Mode is fairly worthless, IMO, but Hoard has some interesting stuff. (That's where Kr got her vintage eyeglasses.)

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Thursday, 12 July 2012 15:56 (eleven years ago) link

I take it back: Mode might not be entirely worthless, but it feels more like a perpetual garage sale.

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Thursday, 12 July 2012 15:58 (eleven years ago) link

I know what you mean about Mode, which is why I said it's a jumblefuck, but sometimes that's what I want. It suits a particular desire for me.

The store by Disco City #6 is Reform Objects. http://www.yelp.com/biz/reform-objects-chicago. Their website is not working, thus the Yelp link. Small and hit or miss, but it's part of my regular rotation.

Looks like Surplus of Options is closed :( Replaced by a boat store.

Je55e, Thursday, 12 July 2012 16:24 (eleven years ago) link

Oh, oops, I just noticed that carl a posted about it well before I did.

Je55e, Thursday, 12 July 2012 16:26 (eleven years ago) link

There is one total hole in the wall junk shop that I love on the east side of Western around Division. Idk if it has a sign (or name).

Stop & Look.

As long as we are naming vintage furniture places, I don't think anyone mentioned Reform Objects in Logan Square right near the traffic circle.

robotsinlove, Thursday, 12 July 2012 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

what ... the boat shop was what was there before surplus of options. surplus of options is definitely still there.

Didn't I just mention it in post above yours? I linked to its Yelp page b/c its site was down?

Je55e, Thursday, 12 July 2012 19:45 (eleven years ago) link

I did.

Je55e, Thursday, 12 July 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

I couldn't find a website for Surplus Options and its Yelp page said it was closed and Streetview showed a boat store so I thought it was gone.

Those kind of straightforward declarations are the best. (anotherother example: the one EZ and I discussed many times the lyrics "that's what's going on")

Je55e, Friday, 13 July 2012 02:43 (eleven years ago) link

it's not "the jewel of the north" or "a diamond in the rough" or "a private haven for dreams"...it's "a nice place to live."

i liked that too. good town motto!

iirc the slogan of Marquette, 100 miles down the road, is "Queen City of the North"

i don't know what the motto of ontonagon is, but my guess is that it's not LOOK AT THESE MAJESTIC MOTHERFUCKING TREES

I don't think Pink Hill had a motto.

Jeff, Friday, 13 July 2012 11:45 (eleven years ago) link

"No Pink. No Hills."

carl agatha, Friday, 13 July 2012 12:24 (eleven years ago) link

The motto of Bolingbrook (where I grew up) is "A Place to Grow."

Jeff do u know if it was your building that she'd glass all over Madison St. this evening?

Je55e, Saturday, 14 July 2012 00:42 (eleven years ago) link

Not that I'm aware of.

Jeff, Saturday, 14 July 2012 01:31 (eleven years ago) link

Small Bar Logan has an even more impressive beer list going than what I posted earlier, and their pig roast is starting to waft throughout the neighborhood.

DX Dx DX (dan m), Saturday, 14 July 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link

Two things about food:

1. I made this for breakfast this morning and it was super delicious - http://ohmyveggies.com/recipe-coconut-mango-overnight-oatmeal/. I don't know about agave syrup; I just added sugar this morning. I used frozen mango from TJ's. Also I increased the recipe by half because I am a woman of hearty breakfast appetites. But I love oatmeal and get sad when it's too hot for it and this was good and refreshing.

2. I just ate at Green Apple Grill. Nothing smelled weird in the food court, either from the fast food places or from upstairs, and the food was great. I got bulgogi and you seriously get a heap of food for $7. I probably could have saved half for another lunch but I was too busy for any morning snacks and was ravenous when I was finally able to get away from my desk and eat. Definitely adding this place to my regular lunch rotation (bonus points for it being on the pedway, although it's also like 100 feet from my building so whatever.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 16 July 2012 19:41 (eleven years ago) link

i was gonna see if anyone wanted to go to trivia night tomorrow or next week?

also there was something else i wanted to tell you guys but i have since forgotten what it was :-/

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Monday, 16 July 2012 20:22 (eleven years ago) link

You should make that oatmeal. It felt like a very Amanda kind of food to make and eat.

carl agatha, Monday, 16 July 2012 21:27 (eleven years ago) link

sounds pretty good, would def skip the agave b/c i like my oatmeal not too sweet!

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Monday, 16 July 2012 21:35 (eleven years ago) link

Not that I give much of a hoot about these things, but I read somewhere that agave has a much higher glycemic index than regular sugar and makes you get all shaky faster or something, so it actually isn't very good for you. Or something. I don't know.

carl agatha, Monday, 16 July 2012 21:45 (eleven years ago) link

mango is pretty sweet as it is, so i can't imagine it needing more sweet?

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Monday, 16 July 2012 21:59 (eleven years ago) link

Hey Jeff/carl -- have you been to Atlas Brewing Co. yet? Was thinking about checking it out soon, but it looks like they're not serving their own beer yet?

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Monday, 16 July 2012 22:41 (eleven years ago) link

YES. Jeff has gone there a bunch bc it's right by the house. I've been there once. I had a very interesting stuffed squash blossom sandwich (vegetarian).

They are on the verge of serving their own beer. My verdict is still out on them. They could go great places w/ the food or end up kind of meh like The Fountainhead or generic like, I don't know, a million other bars in the Lincoln Park corridor of Lincoln. But I'm sure we'll go back since they have a decent list of other people's beer right now and it is the closest bar w/ food to our house (Delilah's is closer).

carl agatha, Monday, 16 July 2012 22:44 (eleven years ago) link

I've been waiting for this day since I first got my law school acceptance letter.

carl agatha, Monday, 16 July 2012 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

They keep saying they expect their beer very soon. Maybe this week.
