There was an actual study that linked hot climates to lower IQs but holy shit if you try to search "hot climate low IQ study" it's impossible to wade through the swamp of racist shit about countries in Africa. Also I think the study was kind of terrible.

Hot weather makes me feel dumb but that's because when it's this hot and I'm hot, too, the only thing I can think about is how hot I am and how am I going to stop being this hot? There's some brain override that's just like EMERGENCY HEAT WARNING SHIELDS UP BATTLE STATIONS and it's just all Drudge sirens in my head until I can cool off.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 23:25 (eleven years ago) link

This kind of heat wave makes me feel like I can hear the larger dynamos in my brain being shut down and whining to a stop. It's not just about thinking about the discomfort; it's a more fundamental diminishment of energy, like when a headache or nausea makes concentration difficult.

Je55e, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 23:46 (eleven years ago) link

I read last week that ^^ phenomenon happens when the temperature outside is around the same as the body's temp, so the body can't give off its heat. Something like that.

Odd Spice (Eazy), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 00:12 (eleven years ago) link

I'm waiting until 9:00 to go to bed, but I could easily pour myself into bed right now. It really feels like some kind of heat-induced hybernation. I did my body a favor by eating 3" of a sub and a handful of chips, and by having most of an egg and cheese bagel for lunch, but both I didn't really want them.

I'm talkin about the heat on 3 threads now. lol?

Je55e, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 00:54 (eleven years ago) link

Made that mango oatmeal again and stirred in some yogurt. Damn, this is good. I'm going to try it with other fruits. Also I realized that someday when hot cereal doesn't sound as appealing as a Hot Carl (no relation), I can do the overnight fridge thing and then just throw it in the microwave the next day.

This has been Carl Agatha with your morning oatmeal report.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 12:22 (eleven years ago) link

That sounds really good. Hot breakfast is only really interesting for me at brunch.

Tho actually breakfast itself is only really appealing at brunch time on days off. Regardless, cold oats are right up my bailiwick.

Je55e, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 13:40 (eleven years ago) link

It sounded really good until you went and screwed it all up by adding yogurt. I have a probably irrational disgust for yogurt.

oops

i need to have someone delete that
it's from 77

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 13:44 (eleven years ago) link

My dad used to pour boiling water on whole (raw) oats and soak them overnight in a thermos. In the morning they were firm but chewable - al dente - and delicious with honey and fruit. Also super easy to make.

Xp - gracias leche. U should be ok bc I don't think it's illegal to link to 77? It will lead any non 77ers to SNA or ILX. However it might enrage Shakey Mo...

ugh i hate ilx so fucking much sometimes. i think i'm going to hang around until i run the Kraftwek poll later this summer (i'm really excited for that, even got all my images picked out already) and then give up on message boards. its like every day the rest of this site, with the exception of a few key threads, just fills up more and more with trolls and bullies.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:01 (eleven years ago) link

It's good to take an ILX break every now and then. Since my last break, I've been really selective what threads I read and studiously avoid the ones that seemed designed to bully people (and it's always "easy targets" and it's almost always by the same group of nincompoops) like the zing thread or posts very much in character. It's better that way.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

oh yeah, i do a little thing called "biting my tongue" and "not reading things that irritate me" as a rule

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:22 (eleven years ago) link

i don't always do the first, but you would be surprised what came out if i didn't do it at all

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:22 (eleven years ago) link

jon, I say this in a spirit of friendliness - not trying to attack you or say things are "your fault" - I do think there are posters that target you and try to piss you off. But they target you because they know it will piss you off and you'll respond. I think if you start consistently either responding by laughing off the trolls or (even better) ignoring them instead of trying to respond or clarify, you'll eventually be targeted less. This is something I had to learn how to do, I used to get embroiled in a lot more dumb arguments. Though taking a break can help sometimes too. Sorry if this comes off as condescending or unclear, hard to express myself writing in my phone in the bus.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:22 (eleven years ago) link

I do still get in dumb arguments. I often wish the Chicago thread was a separate thing, would make it easier to take a break or quit ILX.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:24 (eleven years ago) link

i totally get what you're saying n/a and, yeah, that's true, to a point. but tbh, if i just ignored every thread that that same group of posters went after me in, i'd have like 2 threads left on ilx to take part in. i do need to remember that expressing earnestness and sincerity on this board is a cardinal sin, tho. i just don't like that the attitude around here is, "it's your fault for being offended, not my fault for being a dick".

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:27 (eleven years ago) link

Sorry I hadn't seen people saying similar things on pitchfork thread, didn't mean to pile on.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:27 (eleven years ago) link

i wind up talking to myself a lot on ilx in the hope that someone will also have an interest in this thing i am talking about
that's ok with me
at least the possibility exists of someone talking to me, right?! (also appears to keep me out of arguments, at least usually)

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:31 (eleven years ago) link

The thing is everyone knows those posters are being dicks, so if you ignore their trolling, they don't get the satisfaction of a response AND people still know they're dicks. You don't have to ignore whole threads, just don't respond to trolling. You'll feel better about yourself if you exercise will power than if you let yourself get sucked in to the bullshit. Again, speaking from personal experience here. I still let myself get pulled into arguments but I always feel shitty about it.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:33 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, i mean, i understand that logically, but its always hard to remember that when i get sucked back in. but i'm not so sure about the "people still know they're dicks" part though.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:35 (eleven years ago) link

expressing earnestness and sincerity on this board is a cardinal sin

Yeah, in some threads, totally. I hate this and the whole "cuddlestein" backlash. Because being nice to people and having conversations with them is such a fucking disgusting past time I guess.

I wish our culture was one in which people ganged up on bullies and forced them out of the herd instead of putting the impetus on whoever is getting bullied to ignore them, although I agree with Nick that creating a robust personal mental killfile is key for happiness on ILX (probably the whole internet).

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:37 (eleven years ago) link

(probably life, come to think of it)

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:38 (eleven years ago) link

I could have mentally killfiled that hideous human being wearing a fashion scarf on the train this morning an saved myself like 10 mm of bloodpressure.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:38 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, totally. as someone said in the other thread, "whiney can't stop being an asshole, but you can stop taking it badly." well, why can't he stop being an asshole?

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:40 (eleven years ago) link

xp Heh. (Although maybe it's better not to say something negative another poster in here so we can keep this a meta-conflict free space as much as possible.)

I like being nice to people and having conversations! I'm soooooooooooooooooooooo gross.

did Je55e make an intentional RA Dickey reference recently?

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:44 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i probably shouldn't have mentioned that poster's name.

Holy shit, I think he did.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:46 (eleven years ago) link

Don't sweat it, jvc! I was making a suggestion for the future (plus a reminder to myself since I'm pretty sure I've talked some shit about other posters in Chicago threads plenty).

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:46 (eleven years ago) link

JVC, I wouldn't want to see you go permanently, but maybe a break is a good idea. Of course I've noticed the usual bullies trying to get a rise out of you, but I write them off as incorrigible. What pissed me off recently though is the way one relatively likeable poster has been hounding you with petty jibes and judgments. That person's ILX persona is sort of "tough" and no-nonsense, but they're usually decent to other people, except they seem to have decided that you're some kind of special project for ~telling it like it is~ in a way that seems aimed at getting you to grow a pair or some shit. Anyway, I'm sorry that's happening. I usually have no problem speaking my mind, but I've been less involved in ILX culture and after feuding with Morbs a while back, I've been avoiding conflict. Sorry I haven't spoken up on your behalf, but just know that I'd much rather keep you around than bullies and personality police.

Je55e, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

xps

lol xp'd Morbs himself! I have been interested in reading about baseball and hockey players recently. Say what you will about Frank DeFord (sp?) but he has sparked an interest in sports (personalities) in me.

Oddly, I have never found Whiney very hard to deal with. We don't really interact, but he seems sort of innocuous to me. Note, that is MY experience only.

Je55e, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

Now explain that RA Dickey reference.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:59 (eleven years ago) link

hahaha NEVER MIND XPOST JINX FUCK YOU

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:59 (eleven years ago) link

Say what you will about Frank DeFord

He's a terrible person and shouldn't be allowed within 500 feet of a radio transmitter.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:00 (eleven years ago) link

whiney def pushes all my buttons

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:00 (eleven years ago) link

You know who RA Dickey is, right? He throws knuckleballs and I arbitrarily chose him to make reference to b/c of our conversation about communicating via references.

xp

Je55e, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

I love Whiney and I want to hike to journey to the peak of Cuddlestein Mountain with him.

Je55e, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

thanks Je55e. i don't expect anyone to stand up for me, but it is nice to know that i'm not the only that notices some of this stuff. i guess thats what is bugging me today. it isn't just that, on no poster x decided to give me shit today. its more that its poster x today, poster y yesterday, poster z in a different thread. each of these posters seems to think, "oh come on, what i say to you isn't that big of a deal", but its like, cumulatively, this shit gets to be a drag and bums me out on ilx on the whole.

(xpost)

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

frank deford is terrible but in kind of an amusing way

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

guyzzzzzzzzzzzz please stop talking about whiney. He is not here, and I really really really would hate to see the Chicago thread turn into a Chicago v. Whiney referendum.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

I'm sorry. I'm being the thread police but it's 100% fear based aggression.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:03 (eleven years ago) link

i remember n/a defending frank deford before, and i continue to remember that every time i hear frank deford and think about how much i can't stand him
