that's the tough thing about being a pol or a pop star, you have to appeal to ... never mind

you'd blow it by mandating that TMC run non-stop Jerry Lewis movie marathons, and that's just for starters.

Doesn't the G still have by far the lowest ridership?
Also why are there stops every 4 blocks on the 1 train and yet they can't build a single fucking station btwn Houston and 14th on the East side??
― alan is more upset (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 04:25 (eleven years ago) link
14 blocks is an okay distance between stations. furthest someone would have to walk is like 1/3 a mile, and even then that's going to be rare - like 1/14 people. in return every single person who takes that train anywhere gets a faster trip. there is one abandoned station for the 1 train and one for the 6, in both cases cause they determined people could just walk from the next station. if the 1 were being built today it wouldn't look like it does but if they were built today they wouldn't be built instead of being built.
the g is always going to have the lowest ridership. people take the train to work and work is manhattan.
― iatee, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 04:46 (eleven years ago) link
err to clarify 'takes that train' was a reference to the future-future 2nd avenue segment that will be built from houston to 14th on the east side. there won't be any other train / station in that area in our lifetimes, nor in alphabet city. maybe some crazy light-rail project if we pray.
also another thing worth remembering is that the 2nd and 3rd ave els provided service to that part of town back when the subways were being built. so when you're thinkin 'why is there nothing here', there was, it just went away.
also I realized there are other abandoned stations for the 6 train but in my head I was thinking only grid-manhattan
err I'm going to bed

downside of G expansion: G clogs up the way of my F commutes, and I live a stop beyond the Church Ave terminus.

The Q!
― Like Monk Never Happened (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 2 August 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link
I am glad the straphangers campaign exists but this particular scoring metric is kinda eh, I mean of course the C trains breakdown the most, they are the oldest cars in the system and they are due to be replaced in a few years. complaining to the MTA won't make them break down less, it won't make them not-50-years-old. chance of getting a seat during rush hour is often due to fundamentals (the l is at capacity) and where you are (you can still get a seat on the l, it just helps if you live in carnasie). in general seat availability during rush hour is probably *a bad thing*. more trains should be added to the lines that are regularly completely packed, not to lines that are semi-full. and the 6 had the most scheduled service cause the lexington ave line is the busiest transit line in the country not because 'it's working better' or whatever. it would not make sense to switch the 6 and c schedules.
― iatee, Thursday, 2 August 2012 23:28 (eleven years ago) link
how far does the average subway car travel in an average day?
i only take the c if it comes before an a, but yeah those old cars like to throw everyone suddenly when starting.

idk the answer to that or if there really is one, but I'll look it up

cosign. I'm also kind of annoyed with people who bring strollers at rush hour, even as a parent. Use a carrier or go at a different time. Or just fold the damn stroller and hold the kid's hand if he's old enough to walk. Particularly when I see two parents doing this together.

last week i saw a cyclist, asleep, with his bike across five seats (in the corner of the car.)
I was so, so, so tempted to kick over his cycle as I exited but I held myself back.

man I would be terrified of bringing a baby into the subway - would at least give them earplugs
― smells like ok (soda) (dayo), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 15:03 (eleven years ago) link
yeah bikes @ rush hour are 'not recommended' but I would be cool w/ a ban
strollers should just be illegal everywhere otoh
― iatee, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 15:31 (eleven years ago) link
Idk as a philly cyclist is it kind of frustrating to not be able to bring my bike on city trains btwn 3-6pm or suburban light rail systems btwn 4-6 regardless of how not-crowded the cars are.
― the mandy moorhols (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 22:30 (eleven years ago) link
I mean I almost never need to but sometimes I am visiting family or trying to get home in a p dangerous storm
well it might be frustrating but it's also frustrating to the 5 people who can't get onto a train because a bike is there
― iatee, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:34 (eleven years ago) link
wrt NYC at least
not-crowded commuter rail is another story
― iatee, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:35 (eleven years ago) link
i'm okay with it as long as the cyclist holds the bike over his (it's always a dude) head to save space
how common are the buses with bike racks on the front? i know they have them in dc and seattle

keep in mind that philly's subway is much much smaller (2 lines) so it's more understandable to want to bring a bike w/ you on the train
― smells like ok (soda) (dayo), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:58 (eleven years ago) link
otoh you can get a folding bike like this ^_^ wouldn't be any more objectionable than traveling on the subway with luggage

― smells like ok (soda) (dayo), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 23:59 (eleven years ago) link

― iatee, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 00:00 (eleven years ago) link
I want everything I own to fold into something smaller
Generally, ppl who bring a bike onto the A train at 9am are not worried about anyone else. This bespectacled young dbag didn't give a shit.
