was it you that captioned a picture of chris brown with a dolphin as "you got fins and i got fins" back in the day? hahaha

lol i'd totally forgotten about that! iirc that took an... unedifying length of time to come up with
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 13:30 (eleven years ago) link
in the absence of any records of the incident, reproduced here from memory are the lyrics of a young chris brown's song to the stranded thames whale as performed on mtv c2006:
i'm on the london eye, over the river thamessinging to the whalerescued by the officersbut he aint going to jail
the whale later died
can i just say how remorseful i am that i let the revelation that Dawn studied marine biology come and go without making a "porpoise built" joke

when "pretty wicked things" came out, ann powers tweeted that it was as though aaliyah and tori amos had had a baby, which i didn't get at first, until i remembered this amos song

it's the same...percussive/vocal frenzy, that sense of flux and malleability and confusion and something massive at stake but you're not sure what
― lex pretend, Thursday, 30 August 2012 09:38 (eleven years ago) link
She's great - and intriguing. Pretty typical of her to start the video off with the least "commercial" of the two songs though - as if she's trying to make sure that Faith doesn't become a hit.

I like this song ok except for the rap verse. Singer on the chorus doesn't sound like Drake tho, is this some uncredited Fauntleroy shit?

Playing "Automatic" twice a day for weeks has that effect.
― a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 17 September 2012 16:26 (eleven years ago) link
I spent a good amount of time playing the shit out of "Bombs Away" and "Automatic" and then "Faith" and "Change" sneaked up on me and are now my favorite things on the EP
― wtf where's my chapbook (DJP), Monday, 17 September 2012 16:28 (eleven years ago) link
anyway she said on twitter that "goliath" and "war-faire" are interludes
― lex pretend, Monday, 17 September 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link
"Bombs" and "Automatic" are very much my least favorite songs on Armor On. I don't hate them, but they seem so leaden compared to the rest of the album.
― tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Monday, 17 September 2012 19:51 (eleven years ago) link
^^^^^ totally agree. Hope the album stays away from that whole clappy/sireny sound.
― Evan R, Monday, 17 September 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link
nah the album, and r&b in general, needs to have those massive high-energy shouty bangers right now
― lex pretend, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:07 (eleven years ago) link
i initially thought "bombs" compared badly to "superman" but i grew to love it just as much. and if "automatic" is sliiiightly clunky in execution it makes up for it in narrative
― lex pretend, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:08 (eleven years ago) link
nothing wrong with low energy stuff if it's done well
― Number None, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:13 (eleven years ago) link
how the hell are "Bombs Away" and "Automatic" low energy
― wtf where's my chapbook (DJP), Monday, 17 September 2012 20:14 (eleven years ago) link
i was responding to lex's comment that R&B needs bangers or whatever. He has an antipathy to a lot of the mopier stuff that's around now but Dawn's take on it is obviously a cut above. I don't think she does the shouty material as well
― Number None, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:23 (eleven years ago) link
i don't have an antipathy to the slow stuff at all - feels like about a decade ago the critical line was that only r&b bangers were any good and the ballads were just unnecessary gloop on r&b albums, and i had to kick against that a bit - but when i say r&b needs bangers it is because there are SO FEW AROUND RIGHT NOW. jeremih? slow stuff. miguel? slow stuff? and those are the GOOD artists. anyone doing club joints tends to go down the electro road these days which is not the same thing. ciara's "sweat" should not stand out as much as it does in 2012. and, i think dawn does bangers superbly, as evidenced by oh her entire career to date from danity kane through dirty money through "superman", "runway", "bombs" etc
― lex pretend, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:27 (eleven years ago) link
Tbh, shouty R&B singers aren't really my thing. When I hear K. Michelle or Elle Varner or whoever, I'm just kind of like ehhhh, next. Keyshia Cole is my sworn enemy.
― tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Monday, 17 September 2012 20:36 (eleven years ago) link
oh well Keyshia Cole is the end of the world, anyone with ears knows this
― wtf where's my chapbook (DJP), Monday, 17 September 2012 20:38 (eleven years ago) link
elle varner doesn't shout though? and it's not that kind of shoutiness i'm talking about. i'm not even really talking about shoutiness. i'm talking about r&b that would get played in my old street dance class.
― lex pretend, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link
Totally get where Lex is coming from re: the need for bangers, and I agree on principal, I just don't think Dawn's are very good. Also that "I'm going mutant on these niggas / cowabunga!" line is pretty much just a rejected Drake line.
― Evan R, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:41 (eleven years ago) link
Drake's biggest problem isn't that he says stupid things, it's that his voice is one of the most unpleasant sounds known to man
― wtf where's my chapbook (DJP), Monday, 17 September 2012 20:42 (eleven years ago) link
ditto xp
― tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Monday, 17 September 2012 20:42 (eleven years ago) link

cf nicki's success when she says equally stupid shit but it sounds amazing
― lex pretend, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:43 (eleven years ago) link
I think Drake is actually marginally improving as a rapper, while Nicki is regressing into a louder, schtickier version of what Drake used to be, but that's another conversation
