also because it's at a hip bar in logan square that has indie rock shows

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:40 (eleven years ago) link

ok
so i'm not entirely sure what that means -- i figured it would cover a lot of genre bases because people who like chirp like lots of difft kinds of music?
should i try to know what i know, which is basically nothing "indie rock" of the last 10 years, give or take a few here and there. are they going to have us identify gaslight anthem lyrics? no way on earth i can do that, if that is the case.

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:47 (eleven years ago) link

I'm excited. Since we can have teams of up to 5 people, should we invite anyone else? I would give first dibs to anyone here, but if not, then maybe J0dy + Dav1d?

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:49 (eleven years ago) link

I think "music quiz" is sufficiently broad that I'm not going to bother studying anything.

are they going to have us identify gaslight anthem lyrics?

OK lol. For my sake, I hope there isn't much lyric identification at all.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link

be sure to study up on this

the emo canon

DX Dx DX (dan m), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:52 (eleven years ago) link

invite who you want! i have room for three ppl in my car.

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:52 (eleven years ago) link

Oh man, I got really annoyed with CHRIP when I was trying to volunteer with them. I got in touch with them about doing some volunteer work and they sent back this really snotty email about how they were so overwhelmed with volunteers that they couldn't possibly use me for anything.

Anyway, that quiz sounds like fun! Good luck!

lol i opened that thread once and immediately closed it because i was like "i neither know nor want to know anything about this"

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:53 (eleven years ago) link

I thought of J + D mostly b/c they like trivia and live relatively close to the venue ... I'll ask if no one else registers interest in this thread.

I'm personally not much of an emo dude, but I went to college in the Midwest in the late '90s so.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

sounds good

you're just younger enough than me to know about those bands, so that's good
i'm just older enough than you guys to remember a lot about the late 80s

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

i don't think it's going to be all about indie rock. that's not what i meant.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

really i don't know what it's going to be. i was just stereotyping based on what i know about CHIRP and the venue.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

ok. i hope it's got a diverse range of eras and styles/genres covered. i feel confident if so. just know that i do not have indie of the last 10 years hiding somewhere under my hat.

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

also i know nothing about reggae

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 15:03 (eleven years ago) link

looking forward to this! it's not 100 degrees out today too!

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 15:11 (eleven years ago) link

i feel so so so unmotivated to work today

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 15:15 (eleven years ago) link

Me, too. I'm super motivated to hassle my alderman about repainting the crosswalk lines (also I want one of those "stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk" signs in the middle of the street, too!) at the intersection by my house. I just called them again and referenced this - http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/ct-met-city-council-hit-and-run-20120724,0,582985.story - and bitched that this is my third attempt to get some attention on this matter. Now I have the chief of staff's email and I'm going to take photos of how jacked up the crosswalk is and write him a nice long letter.

Next stop, ward meeting.

Actually, next stop will be putting "THINK OF THE CHILDREN" fliers in the mailboxes of the million dollar luxury condos across the street. Maybe at the park to all the parents, too.

All of this because having to dodge traffic to get to the bus stop makes me IA. And because I'm a little bit afraid I'm going to get killed by a car.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 15:33 (eleven years ago) link

Oh but my hope is to get a bunch of rich parents at a ward meeting after I scare them into believing their children are going to die crossing Diversey to go to the park, since I think getting the richies on board is the only way this will get done.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 15:34 (eleven years ago) link

think about the children works!

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 15:35 (eleven years ago) link

to be honest, when I see parents pushing strollers trying to cross the street there I get very anxious. So I'm exploiting that angle, but I also think it's a real concern.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

There are two crosswalks across Diversey in front of my building, about 40 feet apart, but only one of them has the special Stop for Pedestrians signs. It's strange that there are two crosswalks so close together.

Those signs are fantastic, by the way. They are game changers.

That's what I keep telling Sc0tt W@ugesp@ck. He's really obsessed with food trucks right now, per his Twitter feed.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link

oh i should follow my alderman on twitter.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 15:47 (eleven years ago) link

Have any of you ever taken a class at Lillstreet Arts Center? I'm going to take some sort of a class and theirs are only four weeks long, which is very appealing.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 17:02 (eleven years ago) link

my k8e has and she loved it!

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 17:04 (eleven years ago) link

Oh awesome. Do you know what she took? I'm leaning toward jewelry making or painting. I have so much interesting but half broken costume jewelry and sometimes I just look at it all and think, "If only I could solder..."

pottery

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 17:07 (eleven years ago) link

I took ceramics in college and was so shockingly horrible at all wheel things that I don't think I can go through it again. I'm leaning towards jewelry making. I want to use tools.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 17:13 (eleven years ago) link

i got a C in pottery in college because there was this guy in my class who was like a total pottery savant AND nice AND unbearably hot. his name was pat. none of us stood a chance with him around, but we did get to bask in his presence :-/

you guys i was just looking at the stuff chirp posted to facebook and i am going to sink this ship

You mean the station's general Facebook page, with plugs for local shows? I wouldn't necessarily expect that a music quiz hosted/sponsored by CHIRP would primarily focus on the current music they play/promote. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if, as Nick suggested, there was a very broad indie-rock orientation. But to me that would just mean that Johnny Cash, the Velvet Underground, the Talking Heads, and Public Enemy would be more likely subjects than Genesis, Earth Wind & Fire, Ruben Blades, or Alabama.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 18:43 (eleven years ago) link

I think Kr took a ceramics class from Lillstreet right around when we started dating.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 18:48 (eleven years ago) link

thank you jaymc for understanding what i'm talking about. like fela kuti or lee scratch perry would be the type of "world music" i would expect to be covered, not like andean panpipe music. but again, just stereotypes and guesses.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 18:58 (eleven years ago) link

Totes.

Also, it looks like J + D will be joining us tonight.

i found an old issue when i went home recently with YLT on the cover and a blurb about pitchblende

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 20:57 (eleven years ago) link

with YLT on the cover

Ha, this could've been any time in the past 25 years.

I subscribed ca. 1997-03. Not consecutively, though, I don't think.

one of my college professors wrote reviews for magnet. he also wrote reviews for BMG music club and was in an indie rock band. a "cool professor." i took a modern music class with him and i dissected a public enemy song in front of the class.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link

Okay, class, everybody take a Public Enemy song from the bin I'm passing around and pin it to your dissection board. This is going to be your Public Enemy song all semester so make sure you take care of it.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 21:16 (eleven years ago) link

Thought for a second his band was called Cool Professor.
