An 'elevated' Chix Fill Eh style sandwich seems to be a perfect localvorehipsterish kind of thing, I'm sorta surprised there hasn't been a nine dollar version perfected at some Milwaukee Avenue bar.

WAIT I COPYRIGHT THAT IDEA

DX Dx DX (dan m), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:45 (eleven years ago) link

I've never liked their regular sandwiches but chicken biscuits for breakfast? So good. Let's just say I've wrestled with my better nature once or twice on the matter. (better nature won, btw)

I support Jeff's solution which is to encourage Biscuitville to open a Chicago location. Mrs. Winner's Chicken and Biscuits also acceptable.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:46 (eleven years ago) link

Is it really that good anyway?

In the same way that Taco Bell is "good." Which it definitely is. But not as sorta-gross b/c it's just chicken.

xp - Jenny OTM about the chicken biscuit. That is pretty str8-up good.

Je55e, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

When I was in NC there were ads in front of all the Chicks-Fil-A for a one-day promo where anyone who came in dressed as a cow got a free chicken sandwich.

Je55e, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link

The biscuit is a really good biscuit, and it's just a touch on the sweet side, not cloying just a hint of sweetness, and the chicken is juicy and fried just right and that's all it is, a just-right fried boneless chicken breast on a really good biscuit.

God, FUCK YOU CHICK-FIL-A! FUCK YOU FOREVER.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

I already went off about chic-fil-a in the huckabee thread, go over there and read my opinions. Btw autocorrect changes huckabee to huckster.

Portland has a hipster biscuit place. Seems like that would do well in Chicago -- more biscuit-focused than Feed, more casual than Big Jones, more cachet than anything on the South Side.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:04 (eleven years ago) link

C-F-A was consistently a problem when I lived in NC b/c on the day I most wanted it as a hangover palliative, it was closed.

Yeh, I was wrong comparing them to Taco Bell.

Je55e, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:11 (eleven years ago) link

Just to be clear, I have not eaten at CFA in at least eight years, and I won't eat there barring some kind of major, demonstrable preferably via a nice fat donation to a pro-LGBTQ org, public shift in their politics. But I stand by my statements re: the tastiness of their breakfast biscuits as compared to others.

As with the ARTISINAL DONUT REVOLUTION it would be great if a hipster biscuit place that did take out breakfast sandwiches would open in the Loop.

While I'm dreaming, they also see cheese grits.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:22 (eleven years ago) link

sell. Not see.

The child whispered to his mother, "I see cheese grits."

i'm holding out for a fast pho chain where you can add your own vegetables in the quantities that you please from a little bar. how hard could that be?

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:24 (eleven years ago) link

I will make that sacrifice to be able to buy cheese grits and a biscuit for breakfast before work. xp

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:25 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, but ime, "artesinal hipster" usually means you'll be paying $13.99 for those grits and a biscuit when it should cost like under 5 bucks

I could do a southern breakfast place. I envision a restaurant where a Mississippian and a Britishes team up and "compete" for customers, and you can get your choice of a Full English Breakfast or a Full Southern Breakfast. "Race for Angina" is the first name that comes to mind.

tbh, the last thing this city (or any city) needs is more "artisanal hipster" anything

I know it can be a little eye-rolly sometimes when businesses go out of their way to trumpet their artisanal values, especially when there's mustache wax involved, but the concept of artisanal food (i.e., food prepared in small batches with high-quality ingredients) is a good thing, IMO.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:34 (eleven years ago) link

xposts You might be OTM about the mark-up, though.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:35 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, i was being a little tongue-in-cheek because i think its a little too much of "a thing" right now. i completely think it can be a good thing, it just seems to be getting touted so often that it really starts to become meaningless.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

I pretty much agree with all of you about everything (and LOL at "14"). Especially WmC moving here and starting a southern breakfast place. Do the eastern NC thing and serve cucumbers and onions as a breakfast side dish.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:38 (eleven years ago) link

That reminds me that I haven't made cucumbers and onions all summer. What the hell is wrong with me. Will rectify tomorrow after the farmers' market.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:40 (eleven years ago) link

here's a question i've had - is there some sort of exchange program between the UK and the US to train family farm workers? there are three britishers who work the tables at my farmer's market and i found that curious. it's not that big, and i don't usually see/hear any britishers on a regular day in my hood.

Admittedly, I'm a little over the chalkboard that lists all the farms from which the restaurant sources its ingredients. Like it's not enough to just say "Our food comes from various Midwestern farms." Does anyone look at that board and go "Ooh, Dietzler Farms, that's a good one"?

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:42 (eleven years ago) link

I was at the big Whole Foods on Kingsbury a month or so ago and this woman was grilling a WF employee about the provenance of their lentils, like "You say they are organic and local but where exactly do they come from" and so I think that yes, at least one person does that, but she's an asshole.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:44 (eleven years ago) link

Only once, in the restaurant in Columbus, Wisconsin that serves an entire meal made up of stuff from my uncle's farm!

Yes. WmC, if you ever visit, I'm sure you won't want to eat Southern food, but I'd be curious about your take on Big Jones.

Hi, Wm. It's nice having you around.

Doesn't Northdown Cafe list farms on their chalkboard? They stopped listing their pies, and if they replaced useful pie listings with farms, that's stupid.

xp Music from the entirety of the rock era was covered, though very little outside of the rock genre.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 16:44 (eleven years ago) link

Oh, I guess that's not entirely true -- there were questions about Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Rihanna, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, and Lady Gaga. But those are big names. There were also questions about the Wipers and the Unicorns and a whole round in which you had to match the band to an excerpt of their Pitchfork review, which included Ty Segall and the Cloud Nothings and Dirty Beaches. So your knowledge of rock music was expected to go deep.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 16:48 (eleven years ago) link

Re: farms, the Green City/City Provisions-type folks may have some real association with the people working those farms (or follow them on Twitter), so the chalkboard names aren't generic BS but code for quality within that world.

Earth, Wind & Fire & Alabama (Eazy), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:30 (eleven years ago) link

FB post from a left/activist friend, followed by one of the first comments:

I just have to get this out: The grandstanding by Ald. Joe Moreno to deny a chicken franchise zoning rights in his ward based on comments made by the owner that shows he does not support gay marriage reminds me when some Chicago suburbs deny zoning to mosques because some disagree (or more likely fear) Islam.

Both are wrong and border on the absurd. The personal religious beliefs are being used by the other side for political gain with their constituents. If you don't like a business, boycott it or just don't frequent it.

This is why I don't get gas at BP.

The comments made by the chicken exec just reflect his religious beliefs and nothing more. They still sell chicken freely to anyone and no one is discriminated when buying some wings. For the city of Chicago to now suggest that executives of companies that want to do business here must now prove they share their same social agenda or values is bizarre and hypocritical. And I'm someone who supports gay marriage and rights.

Some town in the country will use this same reasoning to once again stop a women's health clinic to open for they offer birth control or abortion services.

Re: farms, the Green City/City Provisions-type folks may have some real association with the people working those farms (or follow them on Twitter), so the chalkboard names aren't generic BS but code for quality within that world.

Oh, I don't doubt that some people in the industry have certain connotations -- and may be able to discern one farm as better than another -- but I think those distinctions are lost on most consumers. I guess part of it's just giving credit, though, too.
