specially WmC moving here and starting a southern breakfast place.

Yes. WmC, if you ever visit, I'm sure you won't want to eat Southern food, but I'd be curious about your take on Big Jones.

Hi, Wm. It's nice having you around.

Doesn't Northdown Cafe list farms on their chalkboard? They stopped listing their pies, and if they replaced useful pie listings with farms, that's stupid.

Je55e, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 16:13 (eleven years ago) link

Never been to Northdown -- looks good, though.

So what was the quiz like in comparison to the prognostications itt?

DX Dx DX (dan m), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 16:41 (eleven years ago) link

Hi Jesse. I lurk on this thread all the time, just post occasionally.

WmC, if you ever visit,

When, not if!

xp Music from the entirety of the rock era was covered, though very little outside of the rock genre.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 16:44 (eleven years ago) link

Oh, I guess that's not entirely true -- there were questions about Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Rihanna, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, and Lady Gaga. But those are big names. There were also questions about the Wipers and the Unicorns and a whole round in which you had to match the band to an excerpt of their Pitchfork review, which included Ty Segall and the Cloud Nothings and Dirty Beaches. So your knowledge of rock music was expected to go deep.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 16:48 (eleven years ago) link

I thought it was supposed to open Sunday.

Re: farms, the Green City/City Provisions-type folks may have some real association with the people working those farms (or follow them on Twitter), so the chalkboard names aren't generic BS but code for quality within that world.

Earth, Wind & Fire & Alabama (Eazy), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:30 (eleven years ago) link

FB post from a left/activist friend, followed by one of the first comments:

I just have to get this out: The grandstanding by Ald. Joe Moreno to deny a chicken franchise zoning rights in his ward based on comments made by the owner that shows he does not support gay marriage reminds me when some Chicago suburbs deny zoning to mosques because some disagree (or more likely fear) Islam.

Both are wrong and border on the absurd. The personal religious beliefs are being used by the other side for political gain with their constituents. If you don't like a business, boycott it or just don't frequent it.

This is why I don't get gas at BP.

The comments made by the chicken exec just reflect his religious beliefs and nothing more. They still sell chicken freely to anyone and no one is discriminated when buying some wings. For the city of Chicago to now suggest that executives of companies that want to do business here must now prove they share their same social agenda or values is bizarre and hypocritical. And I'm someone who supports gay marriage and rights.

Some town in the country will use this same reasoning to once again stop a women's health clinic to open for they offer birth control or abortion services.

Re: farms, the Green City/City Provisions-type folks may have some real association with the people working those farms (or follow them on Twitter), so the chalkboard names aren't generic BS but code for quality within that world.

Oh, I don't doubt that some people in the industry have certain connotations -- and may be able to discern one farm as better than another -- but I think those distinctions are lost on most consumers. I guess part of it's just giving credit, though, too.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:46 (eleven years ago) link

I'm in DeKalb. It's way the fuck out.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:54 (eleven years ago) link

I spent 6 weeks there in '08, directing a play at the university. I like the downtown. Nice day for a drive out there.

Earth, Wind & Fire & Alabama (Eazy), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:58 (eleven years ago) link

Going back to the quiz topics -- it was much easier in places than I expected (boo if you don't recognize "Another One Bites the Dust" in 3 notes), but did focus on lesser-known details about well known figures, like all the bands Ron Wood has been in or w/e. Overall I think the hardest round was the one about basslines. I didn't know a lot of them because I just wasn't familiar with the songs they chose.

(or follow them on Twitter) this made me lol for some reason.

Ugh, fuckin' Lollapalooza. All the roads through Grant Park are already closed for Lollapalooza, even though it doesn't start for another week and a half.

I got a $10 credit at the lunch place by my work when I signed up for Level Up, which I'd been meaning to do anyway.

Thinking about starting a thread about the move away from cash and away from plastic and toward using one's smart phone as a wallet.

I went in the new target. It's targety.

Jeff, Thursday, 26 July 2012 21:53 (eleven years ago) link

When I walked by today there were a lot of people going in and out, even, I kid you not, like organized tour groups. To go to the new Target!

There is a 30-something office worker guy on my bus arguing with a disturbed man about the mentally ill man's statements about history (Queen Victoria murdered more people than Hitler), government ("America doesn't control America! Constantine killed his son and Helen rules everything!"), the Mayan's predictions of the end of the world, and now he's chewing him out for cursing on the bus. The office guy is now telling him he's full of shit and making shit up. Aaaaargh. What a fucking dick.

Je55e, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:59 (eleven years ago) link

I don't know, if you add up all the people who died as a result of British colonialism and the opium wars and all that, he might have an argument to make about Queen V.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Thursday, 26 July 2012 23:04 (eleven years ago) link

Office guy: "So what if the Mayans said it was gonna rain Skittles? Whatever. You're not even making sense, man. Oh, the world's ending in 2028?? Cool. Pfft - whatever you say man."

They both got off at North and the asshole invited the rambling guy to the Apple store.

Je55e, Thursday, 26 July 2012 23:09 (eleven years ago) link

I sincerely hope that they are both go to the Apple store together for a long time.

I don't know if it's dumb.

This is a Tumblr w/ pics of "Forgotten Chicago ephemera" that some of you might enjoy browsing http://calumet412.tumblr.com.

Thanks for that link! I've been enjoying the Chicago Past one that I'm 99.9% sure was introduced in one of these threads.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 27 July 2012 03:11 (eleven years ago) link

Yes, I love Chicago Past, too.

Jon, do you have any tips for finding the history of a property or building in Chicago? I'd love a layperson-friendly website, but if you have other ideas, I'd love to hear them. I ask of course b/c of your profession. The Chicago History Museum's website didn't have much to offer from what I could tell.

Also jaymc, maybe you know something? And n/a, maybe you do?

Je55e, Friday, 27 July 2012 15:53 (eleven years ago) link

dunno

they "fixed" our email (kinda) but there has been a beeping noise coming from the server room (which is about 20 feet from my desk) the entire morning. so i'm listening to rap albums from 1994.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 27 July 2012 16:06 (eleven years ago) link

Je55e - the only thing that comes to mind immediately is this site, Emporis, but that typically delves into mostly skyscrapers and large-scale projects.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 27 July 2012 16:27 (eleven years ago) link

This is really my fault for not remembering the obvious but... There really is no way to more quickly ruin one of the few TV shows I like than by reading the ILX thread about said show, is there?

DX Dx DX (dan m), Friday, 27 July 2012 17:49 (eleven years ago) link

Correct

Jeff, Friday, 27 July 2012 18:07 (eleven years ago) link

Ugh. Which one now?

Which reminds me, I keep meaning to check out some of the positive opinions expresses about Lost on the final season Lost thread.

DX Dx DX (dan m), Friday, 27 July 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link

Giant Target was kind of disappointing. I don't know what I expected! The Fancy Walgreens was kind of magical so I figured a Target in the Carson Pirie Scott building would have to be magical. But it's just a huge Target in which I got kind of lost two or three times.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Friday, 27 July 2012 18:59 (eleven years ago) link

it's weird to me that target is a "big downtown department store" now

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Friday, 27 July 2012 19:00 (eleven years ago) link

It's nice that it has a grocery store. I foresee that being convenient. But for other big old Target things, I'm never going to buy them there because then I'd have to haul them home on the train. Much easier to take an I-Go to the Target nearest my home.
