Going back to the quiz topics -- it was much easier in places than I expected (boo if you don't recognize "Another One Bites the Dust" in 3 notes), but did focus on lesser-known details about well known figures, like all the bands Ron Wood has been in or w/e. Overall I think the hardest round was the one about basslines. I didn't know a lot of them because I just wasn't familiar with the songs they chose.

weird work day so far, our email is down and no one has called me, feeling kinda isolated and can't really work on much of anything

There is a 30-something office worker guy on my bus arguing with a disturbed man about the mentally ill man's statements about history (Queen Victoria murdered more people than Hitler), government ("America doesn't control America! Constantine killed his son and Helen rules everything!"), the Mayan's predictions of the end of the world, and now he's chewing him out for cursing on the bus. The office guy is now telling him he's full of shit and making shit up. Aaaaargh. What a fucking dick.

I don't know, if you add up all the people who died as a result of British colonialism and the opium wars and all that, he might have an argument to make about Queen V.

Jon, do you have any tips for finding the history of a property or building in Chicago? I'd love a layperson-friendly website, but if you have other ideas, I'd love to hear them. I ask of course b/c of your profession. The Chicago History Museum's website didn't have much to offer from what I could tell.

This is really my fault for not remembering the obvious but... There really is no way to more quickly ruin one of the few TV shows I like than by reading the ILX thread about said show, is there?

Giant Target was kind of disappointing. I don't know what I expected! The Fancy Walgreens was kind of magical so I figured a Target in the Carson Pirie Scott building would have to be magical. But it's just a huge Target in which I got kind of lost two or three times.

It's nice that it has a grocery store. I foresee that being convenient. But for other big old Target things, I'm never going to buy them there because then I'd have to haul them home on the train. Much easier to take an I-Go to the Target nearest my home.

a good way to force yourself to avoid ilx tv threads is not be current on the tv shows you like. always be at least one episode behind. that way the urge to avoid spoilers will keep you off the thread.

It was to me too when the one on Roosevelt opened in 2006 (?), now it seems normal.

It's still weird to me that Walmart came to town and super weird that it came to Presdential Towers.

This is so key. I was anxious to catch up with Breaking Bad to read the threads, but now I am caught up and wish I was still avoiding them.

I had been nicely behind on Louie, watching episodes on demand every couple of weeks, but then we stayed in one Friday night and got caught up completely. So last night we watched it and it was kind of a weird episode with a specific part I thought *someone* on ILX might have an interesting take on, but nope, I get on there and it's more of the same dipshits arguing with each other. Oh well, I'll still watch but f that thread.

fwiw, by my "compare the carnage" comment i meant the author needing to shoehorn in the Aurora shooting. the Chicago stats are powerful enough to speak on their own, but i suppose people needs hooks to get people to care.

That's even more brutal when you consider that those shootings are heavily concentrated in a handful of Chicago neighborhoods. PTSD is a real, daily issue for Chicagoans who live there.
