Going back to the quiz topics -- it was much easier in places than I expected (boo if you don't recognize "Another One Bites the Dust" in 3 notes), but did focus on lesser-known details about well known figures, like all the bands Ron Wood has been in or w/e. Overall I think the hardest round was the one about basslines. I didn't know a lot of them because I just wasn't familiar with the songs they chose.

(or follow them on Twitter) this made me lol for some reason.

Ugh, fuckin' Lollapalooza. All the roads through Grant Park are already closed for Lollapalooza, even though it doesn't start for another week and a half.

weird work day so far, our email is down and no one has called me, feeling kinda isolated and can't really work on much of anything

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 26 July 2012 15:48 (eleven years ago) link

it would be perfect if no one replied to that

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 26 July 2012 15:50 (eleven years ago) link

also they told us not to use spotify/pandora/etc while our IT guy downloads software to try and fix our email so i can't even listen to music or podcasts or whatever. just sitting in a quiet library doing nothing.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 26 July 2012 15:51 (eleven years ago) link

can you go get a book of pictures to look at? that's what i would do.

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Thursday, 26 July 2012 15:56 (eleven years ago) link

I got a $10 credit at the lunch place by my work when I signed up for Level Up, which I'd been meaning to do anyway.

Thinking about starting a thread about the move away from cash and away from plastic and toward using one's smart phone as a wallet.

I went in the new target. It's targety.

Jeff, Thursday, 26 July 2012 21:53 (eleven years ago) link

When I walked by today there were a lot of people going in and out, even, I kid you not, like organized tour groups. To go to the new Target!

Nice to have a grocery store there. Also I can buy underwear.

There is a 30-something office worker guy on my bus arguing with a disturbed man about the mentally ill man's statements about history (Queen Victoria murdered more people than Hitler), government ("America doesn't control America! Constantine killed his son and Helen rules everything!"), the Mayan's predictions of the end of the world, and now he's chewing him out for cursing on the bus. The office guy is now telling him he's full of shit and making shit up. Aaaaargh. What a fucking dick.

Je55e, Thursday, 26 July 2012 22:59 (eleven years ago) link

I don't know, if you add up all the people who died as a result of British colonialism and the opium wars and all that, he might have an argument to make about Queen V.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Thursday, 26 July 2012 23:04 (eleven years ago) link

Office guy: "So what if the Mayans said it was gonna rain Skittles? Whatever. You're not even making sense, man. Oh, the world's ending in 2028?? Cool. Pfft - whatever you say man."

They both got off at North and the asshole invited the rambling guy to the Apple store.

Je55e, Thursday, 26 July 2012 23:09 (eleven years ago) link

I sincerely hope that they are both go to the Apple store together for a long time.

That is dumb. And I've been cackling like an idiot over it.

I don't know if it's dumb.

This is a Tumblr w/ pics of "Forgotten Chicago ephemera" that some of you might enjoy browsing http://calumet412.tumblr.com.

Thanks for that link! I've been enjoying the Chicago Past one that I'm 99.9% sure was introduced in one of these threads.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 27 July 2012 03:11 (eleven years ago) link

Yes, I love Chicago Past, too.

Jon, do you have any tips for finding the history of a property or building in Chicago? I'd love a layperson-friendly website, but if you have other ideas, I'd love to hear them. I ask of course b/c of your profession. The Chicago History Museum's website didn't have much to offer from what I could tell.

Also jaymc, maybe you know something? And n/a, maybe you do?

Je55e, Friday, 27 July 2012 15:53 (eleven years ago) link

dunno

they "fixed" our email (kinda) but there has been a beeping noise coming from the server room (which is about 20 feet from my desk) the entire morning. so i'm listening to rap albums from 1994.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 27 July 2012 16:06 (eleven years ago) link

Je55e - the only thing that comes to mind immediately is this site, Emporis, but that typically delves into mostly skyscrapers and large-scale projects.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 27 July 2012 16:27 (eleven years ago) link

This is really my fault for not remembering the obvious but... There really is no way to more quickly ruin one of the few TV shows I like than by reading the ILX thread about said show, is there?

DX Dx DX (dan m), Friday, 27 July 2012 17:49 (eleven years ago) link

Correct

Jeff, Friday, 27 July 2012 18:07 (eleven years ago) link

Ugh. Which one now?

Which reminds me, I keep meaning to check out some of the positive opinions expresses about Lost on the final season Lost thread.

Je55e, Friday, 27 July 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

I have successfully not read the breaking bad thread this season. So proud of myself.

DX Dx DX (dan m), Friday, 27 July 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link

Giant Target was kind of disappointing. I don't know what I expected! The Fancy Walgreens was kind of magical so I figured a Target in the Carson Pirie Scott building would have to be magical. But it's just a huge Target in which I got kind of lost two or three times.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Friday, 27 July 2012 18:59 (eleven years ago) link

it's weird to me that target is a "big downtown department store" now

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Friday, 27 July 2012 19:00 (eleven years ago) link

It's nice that it has a grocery store. I foresee that being convenient. But for other big old Target things, I'm never going to buy them there because then I'd have to haul them home on the train. Much easier to take an I-Go to the Target nearest my home.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Friday, 27 July 2012 19:01 (eleven years ago) link

a good way to force yourself to avoid ilx tv threads is not be current on the tv shows you like. always be at least one episode behind. that way the urge to avoid spoilers will keep you off the thread.

sarah and i were in the new target at lunch today too

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 27 July 2012 19:11 (eleven years ago) link

I walked through on my way elsewhere.

it's weird to me that target is a "big downtown department store" now

It was to me too when the one on Roosevelt opened in 2006 (?), now it seems normal.

It's still weird to me that Walmart came to town and super weird that it came to Presdential Towers.

This is so key. I was anxious to catch up with Breaking Bad to read the threads, but now I am caught up and wish I was still avoiding them.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 27 July 2012 20:57 (eleven years ago) link

they don't bother me at all -- i just use them as a spot to put my reaction to the episode and then be ignored by most of the other people
it's nbd?

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Friday, 27 July 2012 20:59 (eleven years ago) link

I had been nicely behind on Louie, watching episodes on demand every couple of weeks, but then we stayed in one Friday night and got caught up completely. So last night we watched it and it was kind of a weird episode with a specific part I thought *someone* on ILX might have an interesting take on, but nope, I get on there and it's more of the same dipshits arguing with each other. Oh well, I'll still watch but f that thread.

DX Dx DX (dan m), Friday, 27 July 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link

I really don't think its ever AGL to try and play 'compare the carnage' but goddamn if this isn't sticking with me tonight:

Since 2001, more than 5,000 people have been killed by gunfire in the streets of Chicago, a staggering number that is more than double the number of American soldiers who have been killed fighting in Afghanistan during the same period.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 03:44 (eleven years ago) link

fwiw, by my "compare the carnage" comment i meant the author needing to shoehorn in the Aurora shooting. the Chicago stats are powerful enough to speak on their own, but i suppose people needs hooks to get people to care.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 03:45 (eleven years ago) link

That's even more brutal when you consider that those shootings are heavily concentrated in a handful of Chicago neighborhoods. PTSD is a real, daily issue for Chicagoans who live there.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 13:35 (eleven years ago) link

I'm going to monks after work today if anyone wants to join me. they're having a Bourbon County Stout event. No idea what vintages/varieties they'll have, but it's all good. Will probably be crowded though.
