DISCLOSURE: in the '90s I wrote a feature on drug testing at work and all the people quoted in it were my sister's burnout friends talking about how much golden seal they were drinking before piss tests.

My sister is totally projecting her white whine-drinking shit onto a straw man, as usual. I assume most welfare recipients don't steal money from a parent to spend on pull tabs.

I have had this amazing tendency in the last six months to burst into political rants after going out with friends and having beers. The most recent included:
- A friend and I explaining why drug testing to get unemployment benefits is ridiculous
- Sternly explaining that voter identification laws are a solution for a problem that does not exist
- Ranting and mocking two random dudes on a patio at 3AM for not understanding healthcare

I mention this here, because it's 90% of why I should not have beers then view this thread because I end up yelling at the computer.

Nobody should have to pee into a cup/give up their civil liberties because someone with the power to withhold money or opportunities wants them to. It's just dehumanising for all.

I ended up responding to the post with a variation on the above and it didn't take long for sister's friends to swarm in and 'like' it. Luckily 'welfare people are bad' is not a theme often visited by people in my timeline. There's the Prince impersonator classmate who's a little too InfoWars on occasion but his friends are going to get him off the ceiling eventually.

i actually agree w/ argument that it's unfair welfare recipients don't get drug tested while employed ppl sometimes do, but from the other side where i think no one should be drug tested, including employed ppl, and that drugs should more or less be decriminalized. what's it called when u agree w/ argument but disagree w/ conclusion?

i typed up a really long thing about how glorifying simplification is total bullshit and that-- unless you want to give up facebook and your iphone and go live on a farm alone-- that the world you're stuck in is actually really super fucking complicated but that's also what makes it SO FUCKING AWESOME a lot of the time: all the complicated things that have to work together to make a life beautiful and rewarding and worth living and if you ignore all of that stuff you're really doing yourself a disservice, but i deleted it before i posted it.

i tried to find the origin of this quote via google and everywhere it is posted has the same non-specific story. i think the principal dude made it up. but the principal is real. he's in new zealand.

i keep seeing those phony-sounding stories on facebook. like about the woman who didn't want to sit next to a black guy on an airplane. and i can't believe any of them are real. faux-inpiration.
