My car has a USB adapter which is fine, but I'm kind of pissed that the 7 years or whatever I have of ipod/iphone/ipad cables is rendered obsolete - I've ended up with enough of them that I can just casually leave them in my wherever I might end up needing one.

they're only gonna be obsolete if you get a new phone/ipod, think about THAT

guys I have bought into the apple lifestyle, all the cables are interchangeable, what will I do

if I go back to a nokia phone lifestyle will I be able to use the same cables forever?

your native bacon (mh), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

skrill xx (cozen), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:45 (eleven years ago) link

s1ock1 otm

the late great, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

And putting the headphone jack on the bottom is just stupid anyway

^^^incorrect

catbus otm (gbx), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:03 (eleven years ago) link

the idea of bottom will probably go out of style

the late great, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:06 (eleven years ago) link

not kidding, i bet at some point phones are going to have no correct orientation

the late great, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:07 (eleven years ago) link

hockey pucks

catbus otm (gbx), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

they could have the whole touchscreen be an induction microphone and the iOS orientation just flips around depending on how you're holding it

the late great, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:10 (eleven years ago) link

and the speakers could be a long ribbon that runs all the way around the long edge of the phone

the late great, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link

best sound in mobile speaker history, just don't hold it, ever

i like the different effects i can get on my phone speakers by holding it differently, little wah wah phase actions for big techno buildups for example /sodcaster

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:26 (eleven years ago) link

the ribbon would be inside the case and you'd have a little grill run all of the way around

the phone would pick up subdermal vibrations when you talk, you just have to light touch a corner to your jaw

the late great, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

i remember hearing once about a rumored phone that you would wear on your wrist like a watch and it sent vibrations down your finger so that when you stuck the tip of your finger in your ear it acted as a speaker; the microphone was in the strap that went around your wrist. it was being "invented in japan" iirc, and i was convinced it would become a reality

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 22:24 (eleven years ago) link

can find no references to it after 2003

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 22:26 (eleven years ago) link

i want that

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

'ew, why is your finger in your ear?'
'nothing'

it would have been a bazillion times better if the pinky was in your mouth and the thumb in your ear so you were basically having to mime "on the phone" to be on the phone

the late great, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 22:39 (eleven years ago) link

otm

it's not being driven by technology changes, this. if it were they would have moved to the mini-USB port that everyone else is standardizing on (it's law in the EU)

Micro-USB actually (which is different and smaller than mini-USB) - Apple complies with that law by offering this 30-pin-to-mini-USB adapter:

farm7.static.flickr.com/6051/6314691020_788cd8e576_z.jpg

(more info and views). It's an £8 accessory, and only sold in the EU. And it only charges or syncs the phone, no other uses like playing music through it.

The existing large connector lent itself well to docks - it's easy to shove an iPod or iPhone onto the large connector, and I'm wondering if that will be as easy with the new small one. OTOH, let's acknowledge that the standard dock connector cutout proved to be seriously problematic in that every update of the iPhone and various iPod models required a diffently-shaped dock adapter, eventually leading to about 25 different adapters to accomodate everything Apple made over the years (and that's if you don't use a case - if you do, it requires yet another dock adapter). Many accessory makers moved away from the original standard-sized dock cutout design and used various other means to adapt to differently-shaped iPods and phones, like a dial to adjust the depth of the socket. But I probably speak for many in that I've mostly ditched the dock adapters entirely so that anyone can put their iPod or iPhone on my speaker or car adapter, just be careful when inserting it. But that's less than ideal too, as you can't press too hard on the click wheel or touchscreen without bending the device backward and straining the connector. I think Apple may have noticed the trend away from docks and toward USB outlets that accept cables, particularly in cars, and of course iPads never fit in any standard iPod dock even with the same connector since it is far too wide.

I think Apple is also pushing AirPlay to send music to a speaker, car, or TV, rather than attaching cables. You can also stream over Bluetooth too which is more established and non-proprietary, but you lose some sound quality that way. And any wireless transmission eats away at battery life whereas plugging in a cable recharges it.

this is probably the wrong thread for this question, but does anyone here have experience w/ installing windows on a mac w/ boot camp and know a quick and easy way to do it?

Mordy, Monday, 10 September 2012 13:50 (eleven years ago) link

I don't have a good answer for this, I bought VMWare Fusion and installed Windows on that instead

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Monday, 10 September 2012 13:51 (eleven years ago) link

which version of Windows? You can install 8 from a USB stick, which is a breeze. XP I still haven't managed to get installed (partly because I only have a bluetooth keyboard these days)

stet, Monday, 10 September 2012 13:52 (eleven years ago) link

But also -- unless you're doing games and need all the powers, VMWare Fusion is really very good now

stet, Monday, 10 September 2012 13:53 (eleven years ago) link

i don't have any version of windows yet, so i'm going to have to buy one. do they sell them already on the USB stick?

Mordy, Monday, 10 September 2012 13:53 (eleven years ago) link

i'm doing games + need all the powers

Mordy, Monday, 10 September 2012 13:53 (eleven years ago) link

ha again, I have no good answer for that because I have an MSDN subscription and downloaded an ISO directly to a USB stick

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Monday, 10 September 2012 13:54 (eleven years ago) link

Mordy, if you have an optical drive, it's as easy as sticking the disc in, running the boot camp assistant, and clicking through the buttons

your naïve bacon (mh), Monday, 10 September 2012 13:55 (eleven years ago) link

but yeah, same would work for a usb stick

your naïve bacon (mh), Monday, 10 September 2012 13:55 (eleven years ago) link

i don't have an optical drive

Mordy, Monday, 10 September 2012 13:55 (eleven years ago) link

You can use Disk Utility to put a .iso image on a usb stick, then

your naïve bacon (mh), Monday, 10 September 2012 13:56 (eleven years ago) link

Actually Boot Camp does that for you too

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 20:12 (eleven years ago) link

dayo, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 20:13 (eleven years ago) link

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 20:14 (eleven years ago) link
