it doesn't mention it, but also good for the kids is legalized regulation. i've seen studies over the years that show that kids have easier access to pot than they do to alcohol bc of the way alcohol is regulated ie you buy it thru stores, not thru shady dealer in playground or whatever

Mordy, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 22:59 (eleven years ago) link

that kind of doesn't make sense to me. but then again, in HS *everyone* pretty much had access to everything!

the late great, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 23:00 (eleven years ago) link

a lot of those studies are self-reported by kids so i don't always put the most stock in them

the late great, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 23:01 (eleven years ago) link

It was way harder to get booze than pot in high school for me, but it wasn't true for people I knew whose parents drank or who had a sleazy older friend from college or something, and I think that more people fell into those categories.

OK CLARABELLE PART 3: The Return of the MOO! (how's life), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 23:03 (eleven years ago) link

why would kids self-report marijuana more than alcohol? wouldn't you'd think a bias would run in reverse?

Mordy, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 23:18 (eleven years ago) link

i don't know. good question. but at the same time i have trouble believing it would it be easier for kids to get pot than alcohol for the reason that how's life brings up

the late great, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 23:21 (eleven years ago) link

It makes total sense. One kid gets pot from a dubious source, discreetly sells it to other kids at school. A few beers would fill up a bookbag, get shaken around, and make alot of noise.

I think this is the study I'm remembering:

http://blog.norml.org/2009/08/28/study-says-its-easier-for-teens-to-buy-marijuana-than-beer/

Mordy, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 23:30 (eleven years ago) link

yeah that's a good point adam but another thing i think is that some things get way more attention than others from the kids themselves

the late great, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 23:31 (eleven years ago) link

we would always have these school safety survey results where 75% of kids would say they didn't do drugs but 75% of their friends did or something like that

the late great, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 23:32 (eleven years ago) link

"In their study, they found that 40 percent of teens could get marijuana within a day; another quarter said they could get it within an hour"

that part is like a little "yeah, okay, sure kid."

lulz but srsly i don't think they're prescribing for anxiety in nj.

A physician must certify that a patient has an approved debilitating medical condition to participate in the Medicinal Marijuana Program. Approved debilitating medical conditions include:

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis
Terminal cancer
Muscular dystrophy
Inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease
Terminal illness, if the physician has determined a prognosis of less than 12 months of life.
The following conditions apply, if resistant to, or if the patient is intolerant to, conventional therapy:

Seizure disorder, including epilepsy
Intractable skeletal muscular spasticity
Glaucoma
The following conditions apply, if severe or chronic pain, severe nausea or vomiting, cachexia or wasting syndrome results from the condition or treatment thereof:

Positive status for human immunodeficiency virus
Acquired immune deficiency syndrome
Cancer

i've got one of these ^^

i never understood this country's "well if you're dying have all the drugs you want" hypocrisy

the late great, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 22:32 (eleven years ago) link

then again, i've seen pretty good anecdotal evidence that cannabis is not a particularly good long-term solution for some of the stuff it's often prescribed for in california, i.e. mental health conditions

the late great, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 22:33 (eleven years ago) link

i heard gary johnson this morning on NPR (from the 3rd party candidate debate last night) say that we should immediately legalize marijuana. i wonder how long it'll take before a dem or rep candidate says the same.

Mordy, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 13:35 (eleven years ago) link

Libertarians have been saying that since forever though.

^^this. I don't really see how cannabis can cure or really help any of these. And if it's so bad and hated, why should people with serious illnesses be able to take it when perfectly healthy people can't? The hypocrisy of the whole thing is astounding, frankly.

make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 13:45 (eleven years ago) link

imho, legalizing medical marijuana is a gateway to full legalization - a way to get people comfortable to the idea

Mordy, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 13:45 (eleven years ago) link

also, re mental health conditions, i have known people who have suffered from severe anxiety that were helped through marijuana use

Mordy, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 13:46 (eleven years ago) link

marijuana threw my anxiety into complete overdrive, but I acknowledge it works differently for different people. I'd try it for anxiety again.

how's life, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 13:49 (eleven years ago) link

There is plenty of medicine prescribed for mental health that is not very good for people to take in the long term.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 13:49 (eleven years ago) link

I think in my case, it was not good to take in dosages of like, a dozen bowls and a few bong hits over the course of the evening. That's just how everyone I ever smoked down with liked to roll.

Sure, but why not just admit that it's not proven to be bad for you? Instead of saying that it is bad for you unless you have a serious illness?

make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 13:59 (eleven years ago) link

I agree with you - I'm just not sure it's politically feasible (or at least not as feasible as medical marijuana appears to be).

Mordy, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 13:59 (eleven years ago) link

the third party debate was lol because with the exception of the poor man's clint eastwood from the "constitution party" every candidate supported legalizing marijuana. there were a bunch of issues like that.

this is also absolutely true, i have long-lasting (probably permanent) side effects from being on SSRIs for oh, about fifteen years now

The segment is streaming online: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50133577n

Worth checking out...

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 26 October 2012 23:37 (eleven years ago) link

yeah nothing groundbreaking, but just rad to see 60minutes devoting time to it

cool segment, also economic revitalization information made me feel very optimistic. if states begin to draw lots of revenue from this i think that will expedite more comprehensive legalization

Mordy, Saturday, 27 October 2012 00:46 (eleven years ago) link

Filled in one vote-by-mail oval today to legalize weed in WA state and another to legalize gay marriage. Doesn't mean they'll pass (though both are polling ahead for now), but still, I never thought I'd actually see either up for a vote, much less on the same ballot.

this is insane. NH medical legal great but colorado recreational legal is just... i guess we're heading towards a major federal situation.

Mordy, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 05:05 (eleven years ago) link

maybe CO can take some federal heat off CA?

wk, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 05:06 (eleven years ago) link

WA looks like it's going to legalize too.
