true, as part of a teacher's union i do think some demands are kind of unreasonable given current state of economy and should be dropped. that usually fell on deaf ears at member meetings, though.

they do have pretty good benefits, by and large. And OK pay. It's a tough negotiating position, from a public perspective, to strike for more when they already have more than many, however hard the job
anyway i'm NOT part of the teacher's union and in general i think the teacher's union in california is not a very good thing but the part about having more than many just has me smdh
― the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:07 (eleven years ago) link
bottom line though: nobody strikes as an indulgence. it's a major disruption in the lives of those striking, and puts you in a very precarious situation. so when folks strike these days (any time in the last 30 years, really), i start by assuming they've got a legit beef. in this case, they have a whole slate of legit beefs.

This would be an excellent occasion for the president to fulfill his remark from 2008 that he couldn't wait to walk a picket line as POTUS. Bet it happens tomorrow!

Romney has already jumped into this particular fray. How is this strike playing out on the national level? Is it being covered on TV and stuff? (I don't have cable)

seems like the Fire could get some good exposure since everyone's wearing red and there are a LOT of teachers in the fanbase

Saw a lot of teachers/supporters coming back from lunch today. I think I'll wear read tomorrow and Wednesday in solidarity.

Red looks p horrendous on me, it'll have to be a tie. The only other red item I own is a Man United shirt and a GbV Coka-Cola knock-off shirt, neither of which would be AGL at my meetings tomorrow.

The Fire are definitely my MLS team, that's for sure. I kinda feel like I can't wear any of their merch until I make it down to a match though. (Not that I've been to a Man United match either, but that was a college phase I never outgrew, etc)

Perhaps this has been already noted somewhere and I missed it, but there's an interview with 0. A$hw0rth in this month's library journal, and our very own n/a is mentioned in it! It was a pleasant surprise to stumble upon this interview while flipping through this esteemed journal's pages this afternoon.

you know what kind of comments on teachers and teachers' unions are despicable?
the "if you don't think you're paid enough, why did you go into this line of work?" comments.
cos anyone who doesn't go into "consulting" or whatever after obtaining a BA is just a chump.
fuck this country.

My wife just texted to say teachers and supporters have shut down traffic near her office in the loop.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 September 2012 22:57 (eleven years ago) link
i have to admit i think the CTU's messaging is kind of shitty, and that's (more than?) half the battle.
― flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Monday, 10 September 2012 23:06 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, stopping traffic also not so hot a way to earn support.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 September 2012 23:22 (eleven years ago) link
fuck it, imo, lollapalooza and all sorts of other bullshit gets to fuck up traffic for days, teachers can have theirs on a monday
― DX Dx DX (dan m), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 00:05 (eleven years ago) link
True, but to be fair, people can plan around Lollapalooza and big events. Like people need to remember its not just "lol I'm sticking it to these awful car drivers", its also stopping parents from picking up their kids and having to pay penalties to daycares, etc etc. Not really AGL to gain sympathy.

Like Critical friggin' Mass.
I met some coworkers for drinks at the Encore Lounge after work and saw the teachers blocking traffic on LaSalle. Prior to that, I heard a whole lot of honking from my office. I did think to myself, "Well, that's not the way to garner support from your average working stiffs..." but then I went and had some wine and they were gone when I came out. Still wearing red, still fully support my teaching homies.
Also learned something else truly dire about state budget money wasting but don't want to post deets here. But seriously, it's awful.

I guess my opinion based on thinking that pretty much everyone who drives/commutes downtown does so implicitly accepting some risk that something random could close down traffic for a period of time. Also the teachers announced where their rally would be ahead of time and I'm reasonably certain they had to get a permit, so then it becomes part of the public record what is happening and when.
― DX Dx DX (dan m), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 00:32 (eleven years ago) link
yeah i don't think this strike is gonna hang on blocking some downtown traffic for an afternoon.
― flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 00:33 (eleven years ago) link
No, of course its not, but, as pointed out earlier, it may not be the best tactic to gain public sympathy. Of course the press coverage and attention probably outweighs that risk, so hey.

BTW, per the Trib, the longer day means an extra 30 minutes in high schools and 75 minutes in elementary schools. It's something, but hardly an extra 2 hours a day or whatever someone upthread mentioned. But I guess that was conceded in return for this recall practice, which the city is now saying was a one-off but the teachers now want to make permanent. I think the recall power being asked for is a remarkable benefit that I wish most people had, but it's really a lot to demand.
