true!!

the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:45 (eleven years ago) link

not w/ every single one but sometimes it does

the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

if a program has trouble with a vbr mp3, the mp3 probably has missing or broken headers. i'm sure there are other methods but mp3 diags should be able to fix them, among other things

mookieproof, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:54 (eleven years ago) link

24 bit FLAC, invest in a external drive and you're good to go.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:11 (eleven years ago) link

Except that a lot of promotional music only gets released as an MP3, so I still have tons of those.

I guess I just prefer FLAC when say ripping fairly clean vinyl.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:13 (eleven years ago) link

serato cant handle FLAC, p sure traktor cant either?

RAP GAME MARiSSA MARCHANT (gr8080), Monday, 10 September 2012 20:25 (eleven years ago) link

Both Ableton and Traktor can use FLAC, I'm not really a Serato guy.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:34 (eleven years ago) link

If I was using Serato I would use AIFF files, because you can still tag those with artist names and other info.

I don't know why anyone would ever use WAVs.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:36 (eleven years ago) link

My ideal setup is have to have my files in Traktor tagged with BPM, genre and key signature. But then I am a nerd.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

at least you're not starring them

the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:46 (eleven years ago) link

key signature? really?

the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:46 (eleven years ago) link

Whatever you do don't feed Ableton a bunch of 192s and expect it to sound wonderful if you change the tempo +/- 10 bpm.

Yes, really. It's not really that hard, you can used Mixed in Key to do it for you automatically. It costs like 20 bucks.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:48 (eleven years ago) link

i never try to mix in key, i'm impressed

the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:49 (eleven years ago) link

Good for mashups, if you're into that kind of thing.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:49 (eleven years ago) link

if it's too out of key i just slam it over

then again i do techno type stuff and not deep house

the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:49 (eleven years ago) link

oh right, mashups, no i don't do that unless it's like w/ a dj tool

the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:50 (eleven years ago) link

Whoah, I just checked the price for Mixed In Key and its gone up significantly. Wonder why?

If you've got enough musical training you can do it by ear but I'm nowhere near that level myself.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:51 (eleven years ago) link

The people who blow my mind are Theo Parrish and co who do this all by ear, on the fly, using an isolator to pick out various parts of tracks.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:53 (eleven years ago) link

I had no idea how he was able to go from a jazz song to some hard techno in a single mix, until I realized that he was mixing harmonically.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:53 (eleven years ago) link

oh no kidding, no i can't do this at all

i guess it helps to be a trained musician

the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:59 (eleven years ago) link

i can barely pick out whether a track is 110, 120 or 130 let alone hear what key its in.

the late great, Monday, 10 September 2012 20:59 (eleven years ago) link

What I really ought to do is set up a script that'll rip to both FLAC and MP3 simultaneously, seeing as I'm only ripping a small percentage of my CDs and not every single one of them

gwenguthrie gwen ross (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 10 September 2012 22:18 (eleven years ago) link

dmr: EAC is a CD ripper with some super crazy magic secure ripping mode that will not only let you know when a disc is scratched and has errors, but will reread the problem sectors until it gets a reliable (re: not-skippy) copy. It will often give you pristine rips of discs that skip in most other cd players, whereas iTunes will just blaze through them and give you garbled files

gwenguthrie gwen ross (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 10 September 2012 22:32 (eleven years ago) link

I do not have time to fully listen to every file I rip

gwenguthrie gwen ross (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 10 September 2012 22:33 (eleven years ago) link

when you play percussive bass / treble tracks at 192 really loud or 256 you get artifacts on the cymbals and shit but if its midrangey music (pop, etc) i think it sounds okay

Man I really need to get back into practice. All my talk of ideal situations aside my files are a mess right now.

speaking of which, what happened to PRISONEEEEEEEER

the late great, Saturday, 15 September 2012 02:01 (eleven years ago) link

I does not knowwwwww.

But listen to my mix, it is fast paced and crunchy. And possibly a little creaky. I blame the beeeer.

i got so sick of soundcloud's stupid copyright tagger, couldn't believe i was paying for that shit

http://www.mixcloud.com/misterprimeminister/

a new 60 min cassette with an hip house meets dubstep meets acid techno vibe

the late great, Saturday, 15 September 2012 17:44 (eleven years ago) link

haha i eluded the copyright tagger last time i uploaded by dropping 30secs of thunderstorm sound fx at the start ^__^

tlg i was gonna ask u how much $$ you were paying-- you had a lotta stuff up and theyre not cheap!!

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 15 September 2012 18:03 (eleven years ago) link

The only things that bug me about Mixcloud are the time it takes to tag everything and no download option.

But hey, Mediafire.

Josiah Alan, Saturday, 15 September 2012 18:04 (eleven years ago) link

i was paying like $10/mo for vanity purposes but then i was just like fuck it, this is stupid

let's face it, nobody's going to DL your shit anyway

the late great, Saturday, 15 September 2012 18:31 (eleven years ago) link

I don't know I like to at least give the option, hate that the only version of a mix is some 128 kbps stream.

Josiah Alan, Saturday, 15 September 2012 18:46 (eleven years ago) link

oh shit, really? mixcloud streams at 128?

the late great, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:04 (eleven years ago) link

btw when i say nobodys going to DL "your shit" i mean "my shit", the "royal us" so to speak

the late great, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:05 (eleven years ago) link

You can upload whatever you like to mixcloud as long as it fits. I've done smaller mixes at 320 I think. Maybe 256, defo 192. I think they made the file sizes you're aloud to upload bigger fairly recently. I always stick up a download at a better quality somewhere else too mind, like in the comments or on my blog. Not done a mix for a bit cos I've been busy and not had the radio show: http://xpldr.tumblr.com/post/29684332676/xpldr-mix but I'm prob gonna do one soon ish now the summer slump of 12"s is on the wane and I'm coming to the end of the gardening like a bastard season...

jimitheexploder, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:23 (eleven years ago) link

i've started making all of my mixes at 30 mins to fit them on cassette, i think i heard their limit is 100 mb?

the late great, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:25 (eleven years ago) link

Well I just uploaded a 132 mb file, so it must have gone up. That was 60 minutes at 320.

I thought that all Soundcloud streams get bounced down to 128 though?

Josiah Alan, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:28 (eleven years ago) link

dling that mix now josiah, love pop dip and spin and 360 so thats a good sign

suare, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:30 (eleven years ago) link

stream some mixes but prefer DLs for ones that look good

suare, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:32 (eleven years ago) link

I make no promises, I was slightly inebriated. Sometimes that means my mixing is looser, sometimes trainwrecks.

Hope its fun!

Josiah Alan, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

trainwrecks are great fun

the late great, Saturday, 15 September 2012 19:35 (eleven years ago) link

Well the creakiest mix is 3/4 of the way through so if you've made it that far: Salud.
