lukas, the low-end TCO for an on-contract iPhone is $1800 over two years. An unsubsidized 4S from Virgin Mobile USA costs $650.

could someone who needed internet on the go in theory just pay the $30/mo or whatever for a my-fi type device, buy an ipod touch, and then have a basic dumbphone plan? Would that save significant money?

4s has a chip/chip functionality for extended noise reduction from an external vendor that the 4 doesn't have, it would work shittier

xp - forget the dumbphone plan, just use google voice or facetime

$30/mo or whatever

well sure, and if you're calling landlines you can pay for skype, etc

iPod touch 5th gen is a serious improvement - finally, a good still camera (5mp, low light capablilty, LED flash) plus 1080p/30 stabilized video - that's up from less than 1mp w/o flash on 4th gen. Also the wrist strap, 4" retina screen, Siri, 720p front cam, AirPlay, A5, six color choices, new earbuds, half an ounce lighter. I like it.

That said, a 3G/4G model with an iPad-like monthly payment plan (no voice or phone number) would have been nice.

Lee626, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:17 (eleven years ago) link

if they made a 3g ipod touch i would turn it into a phone immediately through softwarezzz and be all, 'suck it, at&t'
so that's probably why not.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:35 (eleven years ago) link

but you'd still have to pay AT&T or another cellular company to provide wireless service so you can talk or text away from wi-fi hotspots.

I was all set to get the iPhone 5 but may get this, sell my 4th gen touch, and stick with my dumbphone instead. Decisions, decisions. But probably will go w/the iPhone 5 to get radio streaming, Spotify, etc. in the car, plus mobile apps that require an internet connection.

Bluetooth 4.0 w/LE and dual-band (2.4 and 5Ghz) wi-fi also new on the iTouch. One of the liveblogs I was viewing mentioned GPS but looks like that's still iPhone-only

Lee626, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:49 (eleven years ago) link

5GHz wifi is the shit, btw

the late great, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:03 (eleven years ago) link

how much are 3g data plans? i think amazon's is like $99/year, which would be great for a phone.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:11 (eleven years ago) link

Apple's (for the iPad) range from $15 to $50/month depending on carrier and amount of data allocated. i.e. 3GB/mo. on AT&T costs $30.

Sprint offers an unlimited, unthrottled data plan (including phone service) for $80/month, though that does not include unlimited use as a mobile hotspot, and I don't think they offer unlimited data on their standalone mobile hotspot devices

Lee626, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:18 (eleven years ago) link

Actually, if iPad mini has LTE, I won't need a smartphone at all.

stet, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:20 (eleven years ago) link

kind of amazing how only 3 years or so ago you were unlikely to have the same phone as your mates or relatives.

What exactly is the deal with the iPod classic? I mean, Toshiba has been making 320gb hard drives that would fit right in seamlessly for the last year but Apple hasn't adopted them. It hasn't been mentioned or shown in the last two years of Apple events, even though the also-unchanged Shuttle was highlighted today. It's like they're embarrassed they still make them, but must sell enough that they won't discontinue it.

Lee626, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 22:29 (eleven years ago) link

hoping Google releases a 3rd party maps app before i'm forced to iOS 6

even so, fuck

hot slag (lukas), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

idk whats going in with the classic, and to a large extent I don't care as long as I'm not forced down to a 64 gb *thing* (or off the ecosystem)

xp otm, that new maps thing looks exactly as terrible as its reputation

This maps is beyond awful. No transport routing, can't find half the stations in London, it's a disaster. The 3d view of the city is actually fun, but nowhere near as useful as street view for finding out exactly where to turn.

There is one thing good about iOS 6 -- they've upped the contrast or fiddled with the hinting or something, because the whole thing looks a lot sharper/clearer.

stet, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 22:44 (eleven years ago) link

I bet the deal with the Classic is they want everyone moved to iTunes Match and the higher-margin flash devices

iPod touch is bloody expensive now in UK. Starts at £279?

stet, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 22:45 (eleven years ago) link

I already have three classics and I'll probably get a fourth next year. such brilliant devices, not even close to being matched by anything else apple produces.

* The "no hands" rule can be compared to socialist tax policies (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 22:50 (eleven years ago) link

Do Classic buyers want it for the capacity (and low price vs. solid state memory) or the click-wheel interface? I've got to imagine 128gb of flash memory isn't that expensive anymore - either they should lighten it, reduce the price, or make the hard drive much more capacious.

Google just released a Youtube app for iOS yesterday since it won't be included in v6. Hopefully they'll do the same with Maps. I'm fine with the Apple 3D maps if they get it working, but I do frequently use Street View, and not to spy on random people who happened to be walking by

Lee626, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 23:00 (eleven years ago) link

primarily the storage, but being able to skip and ff/rew tracks by feel (without a cable switch thing) is very very important to me

That capability returned to the Nano after a two-year absence, but i'll reserve judgement on how well the new side-mounted buttons work until i get my hands on one. It's hard to beat the click wheel for ease and intuitiveness though
