The thinking was probably along the lines of, "Obama's likely to be in office for another four years, Armisen's unlikely to stick around that long, we need to give Pharaoh a reason to be on the show, this seems like a decent time to make the switch."

Taran Killam will likely take on the part of Romney running mate Paul Ryan.

I just assumed that would go to Hader, but Taran Killam? Speaking as one doughy guy to another, you're too doughy to play Paul Ryan.

not crazy about Sudeikis's Mitt Romney but glad that will keep him on the show for at least half the season

I love his Romney. He gets at the the utter lack of empathy thing pretty well. I just think they haven't learned to write Romney in an interesting way yet.

That's part of the thing with that sketch, they've done it a bunch of times now and each time its the set of a different talk show. Doesn't really make it any funnier, just sayin'.

pharoah's obama wasn't bad but understandably tentative. i just hope he gets more comfortable with the role before the debate sketches - you can't have romney being more smooth than obama

A little inside baseball here, but it made me really happy to see Vanessa Bayer working with puppets again (as she used to be a performer for iO's hilarious improv puppet show, Felt). And that sketch was the highlight of the night, imo.

I was also pleasantly surprised with MacFarlane. Especially since his monologue seemed like a harbinger of intolerable punchability.
