Hey if anyone is interested in going to the Hideout block party today/tonight R and I have two tickets we're not going to use.

So this strike is about to get really real, isn't it? Rahm went nuclear tonight.

I was out of state, but I gather on Friday they were close enough that they thought there was a chance students would be back in school today. And now I hear at least three more days of striking (?), which makes me think someone moved the football. If Rahm went nuts, I imagine it was the teachers.

....makes sense considering his chill, amenable way.

Apparently the CTU wasn't happy with the deal Rahm was trying to force through over the weekend, unsurprising when I heard the details and it sounded like wins for him on almost every count, but something happened and Rahm decided to call the strike "illegal" today and is going after a court injunction to have it stopped. This is gonna get messy.
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 17 September 2012 03:00 (eleven years ago) link
Thanks. I was wondering if I had missed anything. The news is full of Rahm wringing his hands with concern for the children missing school tomorrow, which agony led him to seek an injunction.

I need to remember to keep my headphones on in the elevator up to work tomorrow so I don't need to listen to the personal injury hack lawyer on my floor whine about the teachers' $70K salaries. I swear instead of going to work last week he just rode the elevator and said "Seventy-thousand dollars!" all day.

is this one of those terrorist bombings where the FBI basically goaded the guy into doing it, bought him supplies, then arrested him?
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 17 September 2012 15:14 (eleven years ago) link
answer: probably
http://www.businessinsider.com/us-teenager-charged-with-trying-to-bomb-chicago-bar-2012-9
Friday night's arrest of Adel Daoud, an American aged 18, marked the end of an undercover sting operation during which agents provided him with a fake bomb that he attempted to set off shortly before he was detained
...
According to an affidavit in the case, two undercover FBI agents contacted Mr Daoud around May in response to material he posted online and began exchanging messages with him.
From late May to mid-June, Daoud sought guidance on whether to carry out a terrorist attack in the United States, the affidavit said, and "confirmed his belief in the propriety of killing Americans in a terrorist attack." He then began looking for online resources on how to carry out an attack.
On July 17, Mr Daoud met with an undercover FBI agent introduced to him as a purported cousin of one of the other agents and an "operational terrorist."
At a subsequent meeting in early August, the pair discussed "plans to carry out an attack in the Chicago area with a vehicle containing explosives," the document added.

don't get how this isn't entrapment
Yeah, I can't find a quick link to it because the Trib's website sucks, but the article in yesterday's paper said the feds even gave him the vehicle and the explosives.

I think a local house cleaning service may be running a scam b/c I bought a Swoop for cleaners and it's been impossible to get a response to my scheduling request, and then I read on Yelp that they've screwed over a bunch of other people. http://www.yelp.com/biz/clean-green-chicago-chicago. :( Beware.

I canceled my Chicago Card 30 day unlimited rides pass after paying for it on July 20, so it should have stopped working on August 20 give or take, yet it is still working almost 1 month later. It just won't stop. I've checked the CTA's website several times and it is definitely not funded. I am riding for free.

So last night a friend posted on Facebook at 11:30 that the Chbs game had been rain-delayed and was in its second inning, so I went and watched the game with a few hundred fans in the stands. Got to walk all around the place.
Didn't see this til now (must see video for full effect):

Ended at 1:30 a.m. My first Cubs game ever. They lost 3-0, had three hits the entire game, and a compelling walk in the ninth inning.

i was wondering why they didn't just cancel but i guess the pirates are technically still in the playoffs race
Yeah, I think thats why they forced the game in. This is the first season I haven't been to a Cubs game in ages, but thats probably for the best. I'm still kind of astounded that Houston is still ever worse than the Cubs.

even
cubs have a few bright spots in rizzo, castro (if he learns to play defense), maybe lehair if he gets hot again. seems possible that they could get better over the next few years (guess it would be hard to get worse).
i haven't been to any games this season either. i want to go to a white sox game but the idea of getting evie down there on public transport, keeping her entertained and sitting still for three hours, then getting her home is not appealing to me.
― congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 16:13 (eleven years ago) link
yeah that's a long day for a little one. i think they do have some hope for the future, but sometimes i can't tell if that's my blind optimism as a Cubs fan or something based on reality. Castro could be really something special though.

The time is now to get on the Fire bandwagon. 1 pt out of first in the East, 3rd best record overall in the league.

There are some groups/bars that run buses w/ tickets and beer included, if that sounds like your thing. It really is a pain in the ass to drive, especially for the casual fan.

Yeah, funnily enough I was down there a lot during the construction of Toyota Park because the firm I was with at the time was converting a Venture store right in that area to a business college. Sadly the project wrapped up a couple months before Toyota Park opened and I haven't been down there since.
