Did the upgrade just to see if in fact it would take on my 3Gs as promised and lo and behold. Will see how it all goes for the rest of the month before making a final upgrade decision but I'll likely just go for a 4Gs.

I mean I don't *care*, just curious as to why that would happen

i just updated and ... not sure whats different except for maps

the Maps thing will probably keep me from updating iOS6 - tho I feel a bit weird getting off the bandwagon

fwiw in my area the maps thing looks pretty cool

the late great, Thursday, 20 September 2012 07:52 (eleven years ago) link

it does look cool, that's the frustrating thing -- it's much better-drawn and swishier than the old Maps. But then you look for your bus stop and find it's in the middle of a river. North of Aberdeen.

I imagine the maps will be a trainwreck once I actually have to use them, so I totally see why people are pissed off that actual basic functionality is missing, but I'm surprised at people saying it's uglier. Like, google maps tiles are never going to win any beauty prizes. They look ok because of ubiquity but compared to any real A to Z they are fugly.

(Again though, they do have the advantage of having the right things in the right places which is the important thing, so I'm not sticking up for apple!)

sktsh, Thursday, 20 September 2012 10:23 (eleven years ago) link

PS hard to tell because updates always make the phone feel more responsive for the first couple of days, but so far new OS feels fine on 3gs. Apart from map trepidation and podcasts getting moved out of the music app, I'm happy enough.

sktsh, Thursday, 20 September 2012 10:25 (eleven years ago) link

the A-Z app pwns, so glad i have never had to use Maps or now this new thing

A search for Manchester United Football Club directs users to Sale United Football Club, a community team for ages five and above.

lol

caek, Thursday, 20 September 2012 11:45 (eleven years ago) link

the maps themselves look okay but the map text is really terrible

max, Thursday, 20 September 2012 11:56 (eleven years ago) link

also as far as i know im the only person who uses itunes match but it ruins some pretty basic match functionality. so if you use itunes match and public transpo, walking directions or streetview i suggest you do not upgrade. otherwise its decent

max, Thursday, 20 September 2012 11:57 (eleven years ago) link

what about itunes match does it ruin?

caek, Thursday, 20 September 2012 11:58 (eleven years ago) link

you cant download individual songs anymore -- the only download button is for whole albums/playlists/artists

worse you cant delete songs without turning itunes match off, going in to delete the songs, and then turning it back on, which if you have a big library takes a while

max, Thursday, 20 September 2012 12:04 (eleven years ago) link

also new itunes is ugly and so is the new phone keypad. dont get this obsession w/ giving everything shadows and 3d effects

max, Thursday, 20 September 2012 12:05 (eleven years ago) link

ugh

ahahahah OMG that new phone keypad. Shows how often I use the phone, but jfc what are they doing?

stet, Thursday, 20 September 2012 12:36 (eleven years ago) link

I don't think you can download itunes 11 yet can you?

barthes simpson, Thursday, 20 September 2012 12:37 (eleven years ago) link

no, October (timed w/new iPad mini they say)

stet, Thursday, 20 September 2012 12:38 (eleven years ago) link

Hahaha

I put the name of a restaurant in Cambridge into the maps app to see how well the search works and it gave me a green in Scotland

A+ Apple, good to see you take on more of that big tech company hubris

The new missing artwork default album cover in the music app is an... interesting aesthetic choice

Yeah, I thought it was a collapsed menu at first. Then I realized someone thought a giant ass eighth note fits on that staff.

I stared at it a little too long trying to decide if that was a G or a B

does anyone know what the read offset is for the USB SuperDrive?

Mordy, Thursday, 20 September 2012 13:28 (eleven years ago) link

I have arranged that Apple be informed of the error and requested that it be urgently corrected. In context of Airfield there are a variety of possible alternative images that could be utilised such a cow, a goat, a sheep, a flower or any indeed other type of plant as Airfield operates a nursery. An aircraft is an entirely inappropriate flight of imagination.

I wonder how long Google are going to let Apple twist in the wind before releasing Google Maps as a standalone for iOS.

fwiw i do think this is likely true, not that it doesnt suck to use shitty half finished maps

What’s missing from this conversation is that map usage is critical. More than half of Google’s mobile map usage is going away in the next month or two. Usage makes maps better a lot faster than software does. Google’s maps are going to start degrading. Apple’s will get better. They’ll meet in the middle within 18 months.

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 13:58 (eleven years ago) link

i've seen this a few places, and don't understand how "usage" tells them where the missing tube stations are or that they've got a city split in two.

mapping makes maps better a shit-ton faster than usage imo

stet, Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:01 (eleven years ago) link

there are some good things in ios6 i like, like the ability to send someone a quick text message when they call you if you cant pick up the phone

and do not disturb mode is good

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:03 (eleven years ago) link

xp: the idea being glossed over is "usage = feedback = oops we'd better stop making our maps suck", I think

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link

not that im an expert at this sort of thing but if someone searches and then searches again its safe to flag that first search as prob not giving them what they want, also a lot of googles maps in the developing world are at least partially put together by their users via this open mapping project and have subsequently become the most accurate maps there are for a lot of places

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link

for a long time my work address was wrong in google maps, and people would get misdirected all the time until I submitted a correction, not sure how they would've verified this unless they went knocking door to door

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

iphones are not 'more than half' of the worldwide market for smartphones

less than one hundred percent of people are going to upgrade to iOS 6 (or whatever it's called), and the set of 'people who actually need to use maps' ( = 'people who use them most often') are going to have a slower takeup rate / will switch back to google maps as soon as the option is available

human centipede hz (thomp), Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:23 (eleven years ago) link

I'm holding off on the upgrade because the maps app sucks. Moving to a new neighborhood in a couple of weeks and I need the transit & walk mapping functions to work.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

i agree that that half number is prob pulled from thin air but iphone users do actually use their phones like lil computers way more than other smartphone owners so they wouldnt need to be half of the market for smartphones to generate half the usage

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:26 (eleven years ago) link

there are some good things in ios6 i like, like the ability to send someone a quick text message when they call you if you cant pick up the phone

I've been able to do that on my Android phone for, ooh, two years?

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:33 (eleven years ago) link

ha i thought the bias was probably 'iphone owners are likely to have more money and thus travel more'

i dunno, my gut says that downloading and using google maps on an android phone isn't really a power user thing. plus everyone i know does it! which is conclusive proof.

what would it take for apple to do a proper physical redesign of the iphone
