there are some good things in ios6 i like, like the ability to send someone a quick text message when they call you if you cant pick up the phone

and do not disturb mode is good

xp: the idea being glossed over is "usage = feedback = oops we'd better stop making our maps suck", I think

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link

not that im an expert at this sort of thing but if someone searches and then searches again its safe to flag that first search as prob not giving them what they want, also a lot of googles maps in the developing world are at least partially put together by their users via this open mapping project and have subsequently become the most accurate maps there are for a lot of places

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link

for a long time my work address was wrong in google maps, and people would get misdirected all the time until I submitted a correction, not sure how they would've verified this unless they went knocking door to door

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

What’s missing from this conversation is that map usage is critical. More than half of Google’s mobile map usage is going away in the next month or two.

iphones are not 'more than half' of the worldwide market for smartphones

less than one hundred percent of people are going to upgrade to iOS 6 (or whatever it's called), and the set of 'people who actually need to use maps' ( = 'people who use them most often') are going to have a slower takeup rate / will switch back to google maps as soon as the option is available

human centipede hz (thomp), Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:23 (eleven years ago) link

I'm holding off on the upgrade because the maps app sucks. Moving to a new neighborhood in a couple of weeks and I need the transit & walk mapping functions to work.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

i agree that that half number is prob pulled from thin air but iphone users do actually use their phones like lil computers way more than other smartphone owners so they wouldnt need to be half of the market for smartphones to generate half the usage

I've been able to do that on my Android phone for, ooh, two years?

ha i thought the bias was probably 'iphone owners are likely to have more money and thus travel more'

i dunno, my gut says that downloading and using google maps on an android phone isn't really a power user thing. plus everyone i know does it! which is conclusive proof.

human centipede hz (thomp), Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:35 (eleven years ago) link

what would it take for apple to do a proper physical redesign of the iphone

human centipede hz (thomp), Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:36 (eleven years ago) link

define "proper"

yeah, android is feature-rich compared to ios, but they're also disposable phones. my wife has a 2 year old android and she has wanted to throw it out the window for the last 9 months. was the coolest device when she got it, now it's just buggy and slow, no OS updates because the manufacturers are developing for whatever the latest hardware is.

First released April 29, 2010
Discontinued March 30, 2011

RIP HTC incredible

xps

yeah its just like everyone who tracks app usage data browsing data and w/e says that iphone user use their phones a lot more, part of that is theres a significant % of android owners that just use them like dumb phones, everyone w/an iphone got it to use the apps, except my dad

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

guys why is everyone so obsessed with the skull implant idea? Just take a step back and think about it. You really think that we are only a few years away from elective surgery to stick a microchip into your brain being common? and it even working?

To say nothing of the regulatory environment.

This is iPhones too, iirc.

I had a iP 3G for an extra year beyond that two-year contract and it was almost useless for anything beyond calls and iPod functionality during most of that extra year.

i dont get what people think making it look different will accomplish, whats the utility, i mean as far as the iphone 5 the things that make it look different are changes to the actual user experience, the screen is larger, its thinner, its lighter via being metal instead of glass - you could make an argument for other usability changes that would affect its look, but whats the point of a proper redesign

also keeping your phone past the upgrade point is crazy, that super high monthly bill is paying off the price of a new phone in part

xxp i think the hardware side of things is ok, but yeah, if we're talking about a UI overhaul then the software has been getting worse not better for the past couple of yrs

fwiw i read a rumor thing that was all the ios hardware team is so mad at the software team for making everything so ugly and horrible on their beautiful device, it also said tho that steve jobs was the #1 backer of skeuomorphic design

i dont get what people think making it look different will accomplish, whats the utility

i suspect it's not really about utility, it's about people wanting shit that looks shiny new at some basic consumerist level so that other people will go "ooooh".

It's like the difference between a BMW mid-season refresh w/exciting new headlamp design for 2013 and "all-new 3 series!" If BMW did an all-new 3 series and left it with the old body shape its customers would be left doing that thing of explaining to their neighbours "yeah no this is actually all new, and like it has amazing new active suspension honest it's great" when they just wanted their neighbours to go "oooh, wel jel"

The wait was for a redesign, but eventually gave that up.

Ham Lushbaugh (Eric H.), Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:13 (eleven years ago) link

According to the report, Apple's iOS chief Scott Forstall has long been a proponent of incorporating skeuomorphic features in the company's software, with Steve Jobs having supported and even originated that design direction for Apple's products. But others such as hardware guru Jonathan Ive find the inclusion of such features distasteful, and Apple's designers have reportedly been divided into camps over which direction to take Apple's products.

In the UK you can drop down to a "SIM-only" plan after the upgrade point – giving you a monthly bill of about half what it was before if you keep your old handset.

caek, Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:17 (eleven years ago) link

metaphor in ui design is good so people can start from a base of familiarity, skeuomorphism is just taking things perversely far tho
